Chapter 6: The Daughter-in-Law Who Wants to Be an Older Sister
The young girl sat opposite, her voice filled with shyness and anticipation, her little face flushed red, looking as cute as a cake on a plate. The light in her dark eyes shone brightly, but beneath the gleaming pupils, there was a faint hint of dark circles.
“Delicious,” he said gently, smiling.
The little girl excitedly shrugged her shoulders, as though ready to jump out of her seat at any moment.
Ruan Guixia looked at her, feeling a warmth spread through her heart.
This little girl had become so good at coaxing people; even her biological granddaughter, Wen Nian, had never made food for her to eat!
She wished she could swap granddaughters!
“Little Youbao—” Ruan Guixia looked at Jiang You, “How long will you be staying with Sister Xia this time?”
Jiang You controlled her excitement and put on a polite smile. “My mom is going on a business trip for ten days.”
“Ten days?” Ruan Guixia frowned, looking genuinely upset.
Jiang You’s heart tightened. Did she stay too long? Should she leave earlier…
“Little Youbao, you should stay a few more days with Sister Xia!” Ruan Guixia was on the verge of tears. “Brother Hai and I are at home every day, and it’s driving me crazy! Wen Nian doesn’t come to keep me company, and this brat refuses to get married!”
Ruan Guixia tapped Fu Jin with an exaggerated gesture.
When would they have little babies to play with?
This brat had always been aloof, never interested in women. Now, at 26, he’d been in one ill-fated relationship, which ended in a few days when he dumped the girl.
She suspected something was wrong with her son.
Was he gay or just incapable?
Where was the man who had once won her heart?
Hmph! Her husband was still the best!
Fu Jin remained calm, his expression unfazed, as he ate his cake, seemingly indifferent to the conversation.
Ruan Guixia turned her attention back to Jiang You, continuing her complaints. “Anyway, you’ve got summer vacation now, so stay with me for a few more days! We can do yoga, go to the spa, eat delicious food!”
Even the usually stern and cold Fu Qihai joined in, his eyes showing a rare tenderness.
“Little Youbao, just stay a few more days.”
When Jiang You heard this, her heart was already overwhelmed. She was beyond excited, practically glowing with happiness.
“Okay! Okay!”
Jiang You threw herself into Ruan Guixia’s arms, acting as the loving younger sister.
Happiness had come so suddenly; at this point, what else did she need?
Jiang You’s only hope was that one day, if Sister Xia found out she was after her son, she would help her out just like this.
At the thought, she felt a pang of guilt.
Others saw her as a little sister, but she wanted to be their daughter-in-law.
Jiang You lifted her face from Ruan Guixia’s embrace and pushed the plate in front of her.
“Sister Xia, these are cucumbers that my mom taught me how to pickle. They’re not salty at all, really refreshing and perfect with porridge! You and Brother Hai should try them!”
“Great! Great! Great!” The couple eagerly reached for the cucumbers.
“Wow—so delicious! Little Youbao, you’re amazing! You have to teach Sister Xia!” Ruan Guixia exaggerated dramatically.
“Okay, okay, after we finish eating, I’ll teach you!”
The couple was happily pampered, their faces full of smiles.
Fu Qihai’s wrinkles seemed a little deeper, while Ruan Guixia maintained her smile, fending off the lines that came with age.
Fu Jin took a sip of his coffee, a barely audible chuckle escaping his throat.
Breakfast lasted for more than an hour. Perhaps because they were in a good mood, Fu Qihai and his wife ate more than usual.
Aunt Zhang couldn’t stop grinning and commented on how good Jiang You was at cooking: “The old master hasn’t had such a good appetite in a long time!”
A few years ago, Fu Qihai had been severely ill. He’d suffered several injuries over the years, leaving lingering aftereffects. During his bouts of illness, he had narrowly escaped death on several occasions.
It was only when Fu Jin returned to the country a year ago that his health began to improve.
However, Jiang You didn’t know much about this, as she’d mostly heard about it from Wen Nian.
When she thought about Fu Jin’s dad, she felt sympathy and asked Aunt Zhang about the elder’s appetite, wanting to learn more delicious dishes to show her respect.
After all, Fu Jin was often too busy.
She’d gladly take on the task!
After breakfast, Fu Jin went to work, and Jiang You accompanied Fu Qihai and Ruan Guixia to digest their food, walking around the villa for a while.
Qixia Villa was established in the 1980s, with its name taken from the couple’s names.
The entire villa covered 3000 square meters. It was more of a traditional Chinese garden than a private villa.
It was said that the craftsmen who built the villa were the same ones who worked on the Forbidden City. The stone from Lake Tai and the million-dollar viewing trees were only small details in comparison.
This villa had been a gift from Fu Qihai to his beloved wife.
Rumor had it that when they had just gotten married, the villa’s construction had already begun, and it took almost ten years to complete.
Thus, Qixia Villa became a testament to their tenth wedding anniversary.
What a beautiful love story.
So, Jiang You never doubted Fu Jin’s loyalty to love, as the saying goes, like father, like son.
She had no doubt that if Fu Jin ever cheated, Ruan Guixia would break his legs.
Fu Qihai and Ruan Guixia left for a lunch with old friends and a charity auction in the evening, leaving before eleven in the morning.
Jiang You returned to her room, collapsed on the bed, and let out a long sigh of relief.
Finally, some rest!
She had been kept so busy since early morning.
Just as she was about to take a nap, Jiang You received a call from Wen Nian, saying that Su Rui wanted to meet her tonight and asked her to come over in the afternoon to help come up with some ideas.
“Is he regretting it? Is he going to agree to be with me?” Wen Nian asked, holding onto the slightest hope.
Jiang You said, “Don’t jump to conclusions, let’s wait until tonight.”
“What should I do? I’m so nervous, I’m afraid he’ll reject me.”
“He already rejected you once, didn’t he?”
Wen Nian: “Can you say something nice?!”
Jiang You: “…”
“Sweetie, stop overthinking. What you need to do now is rest well, put on a face mask, and do your makeup beautifully, so you can make a stunning appearance tonight.”
It’s often not reality that defeats you, but your own overthinking. The more you think, the more you expect. When reality doesn’t match your expectations, it’s a disaster.
So, not thinking at all is the best way to stay calm.
“Right, right, you’re right! I need to look beautiful. I want him to know it’s his loss,” Wen Nian said, her spirits lifting. “I’m going to do my makeup now. I can never get my eyeliner right, so I need to practice more.”
Jiang You hung up the phone, threw her phone aside, and snuggled into her seven-figure custom mattress, falling into a deep sleep until two in the afternoon.
When she woke up, she ate a quick snack and hurried to Wen Nian’s house.
Wen Nian’s family lived in a high-end villa in the city center, and the Wen family also ran their own company.
Wen Nian’s father had come from a poor family, earning a full scholarship to North City University. Wen Nian’s mother had refused to become a sheltered flower, rejecting her family’s plan to send her abroad and instead chose to stay with her husband, becoming his college classmate.
Wen Nian’s father had been a charming young man, popular among his peers, and even handsome while playing football.
Though the years had taken their toll, with Wen Nian’s father now sporting a receding hairline and a belly, her glowing appearance still confirmed how stunning he once was.
Fu Wan had been struck by a football kicked by Wen Nian’s father, and that was how their love story began.
Of course, as the eldest daughter of the Fu family, a top socialite, Fu Wan’s family had not allowed her to marry a poor man and forced them to break up.
Fu Wan was stubborn, believing that love would conquer all. She cut ties with her family and chose to marry her love.
They had no dowry or bride price, and lived a hard life for several years.
The Fu family had been ruthless, watching Wen Nian’s father struggle while at the same time, Wen Nian had only received 200 yuan in red envelopes, the same as Jiang You.
But now, they were a thriving family.
The Jiang and Wen families had met during those difficult times, having once been neighbors and shared meals when times were tough.
The two girls had grown up together. Back then, Jiang You never believed her best friend would be part of the Fu family, a true princess.
Luckily, Wen Nian’s father had made something of himself, impressing even his in-laws.
Despite their newfound wealth, the Wen family continued to treat Jiang You and her son well.
The story of Wen Nian’s parents had become a well-known tale among the upper class.
While the Wen family wasn’t as powerful as the Fu family now, they were still well-regarded in North City.
But in the whole of North City, who could compare to the Fu family?
