After breakfast, the whole family carried the luggage and headed to the train station.
Meanwhile, Wei Mingyu had also arrived. She had prepared two packages for the young couple, so even though Lu Jiansen only had one bag of his own, combined with Gu Xiaoxi’s luggage and the large bag of food prepared by his mother-in-law, they still had a lot of things.
Gu Yimin helped his daughter and son-in-law carry their belongings to their seats on the train and gave them a few more words of advice before reluctantly getting off the train.
As the train slowly pulled away, Gu Xiaoxi looked out the window at the gradually receding figures and quietly wiped away her tears.
In her two previous lives, her parents had also seen her off like this when she went to the countryside.
The only difference was that this time, there was a man by her side, and her life was taking a different direction.
Lu Jiansen looked at the girl silently shedding tears beside him and felt a pang of heartache.
He gently patted her head and said, “We’ll come back to visit them whenever we have time!”
Gu Xiaoxi looked up at him and nodded lightly.
In her two previous lives, she had passed away early, unable to take care of her parents in their old age. In this life, she would take good care of herself, live well, and survive!
After calming her emotions, she began to look around.
They were sitting in hard sleeper berths, and there were fewer people in their compartment compared to the regular carriages. Apart from her and Lu Jiansen, there was an elderly man with glasses lying on the middle berth to their left, reading a newspaper.
When the old man noticed Gu Xiaoxi looking up at him, he put down the newspaper and greeted her with a smile, “Is this your first time leaving home, young lady? It’s normal to feel uneasy. If you miss home, write letters often.”
Faced with the old man’s kindness and warmth, Gu Xiaoxi smiled and nodded, “Yes, I will. Where are you headed?”
The old man smiled and said, “To Qingbei City. Where are you getting off?”
Gu Xiaoxi was delighted, “We’re getting off at Qingbei City too!”
“Then we’ll be traveling together for three days and two nights,” the old man said cheerfully.
This young lady looked very spirited, with clear eyes, clearly a good kid.
Gu Xiaoxi thought for a moment, then reached into a bag beside her and pulled out a handful of White Rabbit candies, handing them to the old man.
“Grandpa, please have some wedding candies. I just got married yesterday.”
The old man was momentarily stunned, glanced at the officer beside her who was organizing their luggage, and then smiled as he accepted the candies from the young girl.
“Thank you! Then let me give you a small gift too!”
With that, the old man took out a small sachet from a black bag by his pillow and handed it to her.
“This contains calming incense. If you feel uneasy in a new place, put this under your pillow, and it’ll ensure you sleep well!”
Gu Xiaoxi took it, smelled it, and found the gentle, soothing fragrance extremely comforting. She quickly thanked him.
“Thank you!”
Lu Jiansen also looked up, stood straight, and thanked the old man, “Thank you!”
The old man smiled and shook his head, “No need to be polite. I just took a liking to this young girl. Judging by her appearance, is she following you to join the army?”
Lu Jiansen nodded lightly, “Yes.”
The old man nodded and didn’t ask further.
Seeing that both of their tickets were for lower berths, Gu Xiaoxi said to the old man, “Would you like to take the lower berth? We can switch with you.”
The old man smiled and shook his head, “No need, it’s quieter up there. The big black bag at your feet is mine. Just keep an eye on it when there are many people around.”
Gu Xiaoxi nodded, “Alright!”
There weren’t many entertainment options on the train, and after sitting for a while, she began to feel bored.
Lu Jiansen whispered, “Do you want to sleep for a bit?”
Gu Xiaoxi shook her head, “Didn’t you stay up last night helping my parents cook in the kitchen? You sleep! I’ll watch the luggage.”
Lu Jiansen rubbed her head, “I’m not tired. Do you want to read the newspaper or eat something?”
If she wasn’t going to sleep, reading the newspaper or eating something were leisure activities to pass the time.
Gu Xiaoxi didn’t feel like reading the newspaper or eating, so after some hesitation, she decided to sleep.
She had woken up early in the morning and was still a bit sleep-deprived.
With Lu Jiansen by her side, she felt at ease, so she placed the sachet the old man had just given her under her pillow and fell asleep.
This time, she slept unusually well!
When she woke up, it was already 1:30 in the afternoon.
By then, there were many more people on the train. The old man from the middle berth to the left was now sitting in Lu Jiansen’s seat, eating a bun.
Beside the old man sat a tall, thin young man and a girl wearing a floral dress.
Lu Jiansen, however, was not in the compartment.
When she woke up, the old man smiled and said, “You’re awake, young lady! Comrade Lu went to fetch hot water and will be back soon.”
“Mm,” Gu Xiaoxi smiled sheepishly, ran her fingers through her hair a couple of times, and got out of bed to stretch her limbs.
The man and woman across from her were staring at her. The man’s eyes showed admiration, while the woman bit her lip and frowned.
Gu Xiaoxi noticed the resentful gaze but didn’t pay it any mind. She casually tidied her slightly disheveled hair.
Just then, the train’s intercom crackled twice, and a voice came through.
“Attention, passengers. We are currently looking for a doctor. A passenger in Carriage 8 has suddenly fainted and requires urgent medical attention. Any medical professionals, please proceed to Carriage 8…”
“Attention, passengers. We are currently looking for a doctor…”
As Gu Xiaoxi listened, the old man who had given her the sachet put down the remaining bun in his hand, took out a small box with a medical cross from his large black bag, and hurried toward Carriage 8.
Gu Xiaoxi was slightly surprised. So, the old man was a doctor?
The young man sitting across from her couldn’t help but remark, “So that old man is a doctor after all!”
The girl in the floral dress beside him, however, pursed her lips and said, “People with illnesses shouldn’t be running around everywhere. They’re just causing trouble for society! If there were no doctors on the train, wouldn’t they just be waiting to die?”
Gu Xiaoxi blinked her eyes and sat quietly, not offering any opinion.
The girl, seeing Gu Xiaoxi sitting there beautifully, like a painting, couldn’t help but ask, “Hey, are you and that officer in an arranged marriage set up by your families since childhood? You look quite young.”
Gu Xiaoxi narrowed her eyes slightly. How did this woman know she was married?
What had happened while she was asleep?
Though puzzled, seeing the woman’s disdain for arranged marriages and her eagerness to assume that she and Lu Jiansen were in one, Gu Xiaoxi smiled and said, “It’s not an arranged marriage. We fell in love at first sight, you could say. You look quite a bit older—are you married? How old are your children?”
The girl was stunned, her face twisting in disbelief.
She couldn’t believe that this woman was asking her how old her children were?
She was still an unmarried young woman, for goodness’ sake!
Originally, she had wanted to argue with Gu Xiaoxi, but out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a tall, handsome figure in military green.
Her expression changed, and she suddenly covered her face, her eyes red with grievance.
“How can you spread such rumors? I’m still an unmarried young girl. How could I have children?”
