Chapter 31
Tang Wan and Lu Huaijing exchanged a glance, and they decided not to refuse.
“Mother, you’ve worked so hard!”
Lu Huaijing was genuinely grateful to his mother. It wasn’t easy for her to raise six children on her own.
“What’s the hardship?”
Wang Dani smiled, “You’ve all grown up. I’m old now, and I can finally face your father with pride.”
She patted her sleeve and stood up, “There’s still a lot to do in the yard. You two, have a good chat.”
Although Wang Dani didn’t work often, she occasionally took the children to gather vegetables and earn some work points.
As soon as she left, Tang Wan excitedly pointed to the red envelopes on the bed, “Lu Huaijing, let’s open the red envelopes!”
“Okay.”
Seeing Tang Wan so happy, Lu Huaijing’s mood also brightened.
They took out the money from the red envelopes, and the next second, Tang Wan was stunned.
“Why is it only two cents?”
She couldn’t believe it. Was that… was that the going rate for gifts in this era?
“Don’t worry about it. It’s probably from the intellectuals in the brigade.”
Seeing her disappointment, Lu Huaijing quickly explained, “Actually, we didn’t invite them.
But the intellectuals want to integrate with our brigade, so they’ll go to any wedding feast to join in the fun.”
Tang Wan: …
This wasn’t joining in the fun, it was clearly coming to eat meat for free.
But on such a happy day, she didn’t want to argue. She quickly opened the other red envelopes.
Fortunately, there weren’t many two-cent ones. Most were one or two yuan.
She counted them, and there were a total of thirty-two yuan, not much, but a lucky number.
“Lu Huaijing, don’t you have a younger sister? Why didn’t I see her today?”
Tang Wan was a little confused. She remembered that Wang Dani had six children.
“Huai Li married a soldier and followed him to the army.”
Lu Huaijing was closer to Lu Huai Li than Lu Huai Mei, as they were closer in age.
Moreover, Lu Huai Li’s husband was introduced by him.
“I see.”
Tang Wan put away all the money and coupons. Lu Lao Er’s voice came from outside.
“Third brother, my second sister-in-law and I only took a day off. We have to go back to the city tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
Lu Huaijing opened the door, and sure enough, he saw Lu Huaide’s family already packed up.
Wang Dani had brought them some leftover meat and vegetables. The whole family sat neatly on their bicycles.
Tang Wan quickly called out to them, “Second sister-in-law, wait.”
She remembered that Wang Shuhuan had given a gift of five yuan, which was a lot of money in this era.
She quickly ran back into the room and took two red envelopes, handing them to Xiao Kui and Xiao Ju.
“It’s not good for them to go home empty-handed since it’s my first time meeting them.”
“Thank you, third aunt.”
Wang Shuhuan, who usually had a cold face, looked surprised. She quickly turned to her children.
“Thank you, third aunt.”
“Thank you, third aunt.”
The two children smiled timidly. They seemed shy. Perhaps it was because Tang Wan was smiling so warmly that they felt close to her.
“Third sister-in-law, you can’t play favorites!”
Li Cuifang, with her sharp eyes, noticed that Tang Wan had given red envelopes to Wang Shuhuan’s children. She immediately jumped out.
Tang Wan: …
Thinking about Li Cuifang’s fifty-cent gift, she didn’t understand how she could say that.
“Mother, we’re leaving.”
Lu Huaide glanced at Wang Dani, who was frowning, and immediately rode away on his bicycle.
“What are you running for?”
Li Cuifang pouted and complained to Wang Dani, “Mother, they are all third sister-in-law’s nieces. You have to treat them equally.”
She had a son too. She was being so biased.
“Sister-in-law, I’ve prepared red envelopes for the nephews and nieces.”
Tang Wan took out three red envelopes she had prepared earlier, each containing one cent.
That’s how she was. She didn’t like to be taken advantage of, but she wouldn’t let anyone take advantage of her either.
But she wouldn’t let anyone pick on her.
“Thank your third aunt!”
Li Cuifang quickly called her three children over. The three children thanked Tang Wan in unison. Tang Wan gave each of them a red envelope.
Wang Dani was very satisfied with Tang Wan. This daughter-in-law was generous.
Unlike Li Cuifang, who was stingy. Even though she was the eldest daughter-in-law, it was unacceptable.
Li Cuifang didn’t know that she had gotten three cents but was being compared by her mother-in-law. She happily pulled her three children back to their room.
Perhaps to see how much money was in the red envelopes.
“Mother, this morning, Zhou Zhou and I found some wild eggs in the mountains. They’re in the basket with the vegetables.
We’re going to the army tomorrow. Let’s have scrambled eggs tonight, so everyone can have a taste of meat.”
Tang Wan smiled at Wang Dani. If it were Li Cuifang, Wang Dani would definitely scold her for being wasteful.
But Tang Wan did this to give the children a taste of meat, which made Wang Dani happy.
“Okay, you’ve been busy all day. Go back to your room and rest for a while.”
Tang Wan obediently went back to her room. Since they were leaving tomorrow, Lu Huaijing was also busy with something.
Li Cuifang’s voice, filled with sarcasm, could be heard outside. She was probably complaining about the small amount of money.
She was then scolded by Wang Dani. Tang Wan was annoyed and quietly went into her space.
The wild chickens and rabbits she had kept in her space were making a lot of noise. Fortunately, she hadn’t planted anything in her space yet, so she simply kept the chickens and rabbits on the land outside the mall.
Worried that they would cause trouble, Tang Wan planned to build some cages for them to move around in before planting vegetables.
She decided to act quickly. Tang Wan came out of her space. It was still early, so she went towards the foot of the mountain.
There were many dead branches in the mountains. Tang Wan threw a lot of them into her space. When it got dark, she hurried back home.
She arrived home just in time for dinner.
Li Cuifang had been sulking. When she saw Tang Wan come in, she sneered sarcastically.
“The richer people are, the stingier they are.”
Unfortunately, no one responded. Tang Wan naturally sat next to Tang Zhou.
“If you don’t want to eat, get out!”
Wang Dani glared at Li Cuifang and reminded her softly, “These wild eggs were brought back by the third son’s wife.”
Li Cuifang was immediately silenced, like a fighting rooster whose neck had been pinched.
But when she saw that Wang Dani had given the most eggs to Tang Wan and Lu Huaijing, she was about to speak.
She met Lu Huai Ren’s warning gaze and could only shut her mouth, her face black with anger.
Lu Huai Mei was afraid of being scolded by Lu Huaijing, so she didn’t dare to say anything either. The meal was eaten in silence.
After dinner, Wang Dani told Tang Wan and Lu Huaijing to go back to their room early. She would pack their things for them.
Tang Wan was happy to oblige. Taking Wang Dani’s words, she left the dishes for Li Cuifang to handle. She took her clothes to wash up, while Lu Huaijing guarded the door.
When she finished washing, Lu Huaijing took his turn. As they returned to their room, Tang Wan’s heart was pounding.
Thinking about what was going to happen next, she quickly rolled herself up in the red wedding quilt.
Oh my god, she, a single woman who had never been in a relationship before, was about to share a room with someone she had only known for a few days!
Just as she was lost in thought, the door opened, and Lu Huaijing came in, radiating warmth.
He had just finished washing up, and his scent was clean and fresh. Tang Wan’s gaze couldn’t help but fall on his abdomen.
Perhaps sensing her shy gaze, Lu Huaijing’s eyes twinkled mischievously.
“Don’t worry, wife. I’ll make sure you’re satisfied.”
“What are you talking about?”
Tang Wan’s face flushed red, but she let Lu Huaijing get into bed. In an instant, his scent, like fresh grass, enveloped her.
