Chapter 55
“Wife!”
The somewhat familiar voice made Tang Wan stiffen slightly. She finally stopped her bicycle and looked towards the black shadow.
“Lu Huaijing?”
Her voice was cautious, even a little trembling. She thought she had imagined it.
She had heard that you shouldn’t respond to anyone calling you at night. Tang Wan’s legs went weak, and she almost fell off her bicycle.
Lu Huaijing raised the flashlight in his hand and said softly, “Don’t be afraid. It’s me.”
He walked over to Tang Wan in a few steps. Tang Wan parked her bicycle and couldn’t help but punch him.
“You’re such a big black shadow in the middle of the night, and you don’t make a sound. Are you trying to scare someone to death?!”
She was so angry. Damn it, she really thought she had seen a ghost. She must have looked ridiculous.
Thinking about it now, her face was burning. It was his fault, his fault, all his fault!
“Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. It’s my fault.”
Lu Huaijing’s big hand held hers tightly, his eyes filled with annoyance.
He had been thinking about something and hadn’t noticed what was in front of him. How could he know that she would be so scared of him that she would pedal her bicycle like crazy?
Feeling the warmth in her palm, Tang Wan was sure that the person in front of her was Lu Huaijing, a living person. Somehow, her nose twitched.
“You scared me. You owe me compensation.”
“Okay, I’ll compensate you.”
Lu Huaijing reached out to wipe away the tears at the corners of her eyes. He had been training for many years, so his fingertips were a little rough.
Tang Wan gradually calmed down and mumbled, “Give yourself to me as compensation.”
“Okay, I’ll give myself to you. I’m sorry, wife.”
The little darling in front of him was panicked. Her face was pale under the light. Lu Huaijing felt very distressed.
He wrapped his arms around her and gently kissed away the tears at the corners of her eyes.
Tang Wan, who was still in a state of fear, only felt his lips were hot, so hot that her eyes were burning.
Her heart was pounding, and her fingertips tightened slightly on the corner of his clothes.
Even her voice became softer. “How did you know I was coming back this way?”
“The wife of the political commissar said that you came back from Mao Zhuang Brigade by oxcart this afternoon. I knew you would definitely go to see your parents.”
Lu Huaijing held her in his arms and gently rubbed her hair with his fingertips. He felt a little scared.
“You didn’t come back all night. I was worried that the villagers would find out about your relationship…”
Yes, Lu Huaijing admitted that he was a little panicked at that moment, even though they had already gotten their marriage certificate. If anyone caught her interacting with the people in the cow shed, she would be in trouble.
Just thinking about the villagers hurting her in a fit of anger, he couldn’t sit still.
“I was very careful.”
Tang Wan explained nervously. “It was too bright during the day, so I was afraid of being seen when I went to see Mom and Dad. So I went in the dark, which took some time.”
“I’ll go with you at night from now on. It’s too dangerous for you to be out alone at night.”
Lu Huaijing couldn’t help but think, what if it hadn’t been him that she had met?
She was so beautiful. What if she had met someone with bad intentions?
He couldn’t think about it. He felt like he was going crazy.
“I’ll be more careful in the future.”
Tang Wan held onto Lu Huaijing’s clothes tightly. “Zhouzhou is home alone. Let’s go back.”
If he kept staring at her like that, Tang Wan felt like she was going to suffocate!
“Okay.”
Lu Huaijing took the backpack from her back and put it on his own. Then he got on his bicycle. “Get on.”
“I bought this bicycle.”
After Tang Wan got on the bicycle, she told him softly what she had bought today.
The love of his life was in his arms, and a faint fragrance drifted towards Lu Huaijing. His heart was in turmoil.
He couldn’t help but think of Tang Wan’s milky white skin and mischievous smile. Then Tang Wan said with a straight face,
“Why aren’t you saying anything? Do you think I’m too extravagant?”
It didn’t matter if he thought she was extravagant. She would buy what she wanted anyway.
Tang Wan had never been one to deprive herself, especially since she had money.
“No.”
Lu Huaijing chuckled, pushing aside the chaotic thoughts in his mind.
“Since I’ve entrusted you with managing the money, you can buy whatever you want.”
“Besides those things, I also ordered a lot of furniture from Mao Zhuang Brigade.”
Tang Wan smiled contentedly. Although this man’s family was a bit difficult to deal with,
his mother-in-law was reasonable, and they were far away from everything, living their own lives.
She believed that she could make a good life for herself.
“Then I’ll accompany you to pick up the furniture when I’m done with training.”
Lu Huaijing felt a little heartache. His wife had been pampered by her parents since she was a child.
These things were nothing compared to her previous life.
He had to work hard and give her a better life.
“If you’re busy, I can go by myself.”
Tang Wan was in a good mood. “I’ll rent an oxcart to transport the things to the family compound then.”
The two of them chatted softly along the way. Lu Huaijing just wished that time would slow down.
He wanted to keep going like this forever, so he rode his bicycle very slowly.
Tang Wan was dizzy, enveloped in his arms. His taut muscles were against her back, and his breath, like fresh grass, was in her ear.
She nervously placed her hand on the top of the bicycle and could clearly hear her own heartbeat.
Damn it, she was being seduced by his good looks!
She was lost in her own world and didn’t notice that Lu Huaijing had taken twenty minutes to ride a journey that should have taken only ten minutes.
Finally, they arrived back at the compound. It was already late, and people in every household were washing up and preparing for bed.
A light was on in their yard. When the bicycle stopped, Tang Wan noticed that Zhouzhou was standing nervously at the entrance of the yard.
Seeing them, Zhouzhou ran over in one stride. “Sister, you’re finally back!”
He hugged Tang Wan tightly. It was obvious that he was very insecure. His little face was tense.
“I’m sorry, Zhouzhou.”
Tang Wan was filled with guilt. She had been so focused on seeing her parents that she had forgotten that Zhouzhou was only an eight-year-old child.
Such a young child would definitely be scared being home alone.
“Let’s go inside.”
Lu Huaijing pushed the bicycle into the yard. The three of them went inside, and Tang Wan apologized to Zhouzhou.
“I went to see Mom and Dad. There were a lot of people in the brigade, so I was afraid of being discovered. It was safer to go in the dark.”
Zhouzhou, who had been tense, immediately perked up. “How are Mom and Dad?”
“They’re fine.”
Tang Wan didn’t want the young child to overthink things. She reassured him, “Although they’re not living well and people look down on them,
at least they’re still alive. I’ll go see them often.”
“I want to see Mom and Dad too.”
Zhouzhou looked up at Tang Wan and Lu Huaijing, his face full of hope.
The two of them looked at each other, their expressions a little troubled. They were mainly worried that he wouldn’t be able to control his emotions and then someone would see him and report them.
They should at least wait until his mother recovered a bit. Just as Tang Wan was trying to figure out how to stall for time, there was a knock at the door.
“Who could it be at this late hour?”
Tang Wan subconsciously looked at Lu Huaijing. Lu Huaijing was also puzzled. He walked towards the door and asked loudly,
“Who is it?”
“It’s me.”
It was a man’s voice. Lu Huaijing suddenly looked at Tang Wan and Zhouzhou and said,
“It’s Director Xu. You two go inside.”
He was worried that the other party was coming to cause trouble, so he asked them to hide.
