Chapter 66
Perhaps she saw the wariness in Tang Wan’s eyes. Auntie Liu chuckled.
“Girl, don’t think that we who live in the family compound are all glamorous. In reality, we’re all craving something.”
“Then I’ll trouble you, Auntie. I still have about thirty jin of meat.”
Tang Wan didn’t plan to sell too much at once. She loved money, but she wasn’t short of money. It was always better to be careful.
“Okay, girl, wait here. I’ll go find some people.”
Auntie Liu first put away her own meat and then ran out.
She was so enthusiastic, which made Tang Wan’s heart beat a little faster. So she didn’t wait inside the house.
She stood behind a tree nearby. After a while, she saw Auntie Liu bringing a few women back to the house, chatting and laughing.
After confirming that they weren’t from the neighborhood committee, Tang Wan approached with her backpack.
“Huh, she was just here.”
Auntie Liu’s voice came from inside the house, full of confusion. Tang Wan pushed open the door and walked in, smiling.
“Auntie, I just went to the public toilet outside.”
“It’s okay, it’s okay. Come in.”
Auntie Liu was a smart person. She naturally knew why Tang Wan had gone out, but she didn’t mind.
After all, they were strangers before. It was normal to be distrustful.
The others didn’t have any objections either. As soon as the door closed, Auntie Liu hushed them.
“Everyone, keep your voices down. I have a scale here.”
“Auntie Liu, don’t worry. You remember us when you have good things. We won’t betray you.”
“Yeah, girl, give me a jin of meat. I’ll take it and leave.”
“…”
They were all straightforward people. Tang Wan was also quick. She knew that her meat was already weighed, so she didn’t even bother to weigh it again.
In a few minutes, the thirty jin of meat in Tang Wan’s backpack was gone.
Today, she earned a total of forty-seven yuan. Tang Wan carried her empty backpack and said to Auntie Liu,
“Thank you, Auntie. I’ll go now.”
There was no one else around. Auntie Liu excitedly said to Tang Wan, “Girl, don’t worry. I’m reliable.
If you have any good things in the future, just come to me at the entrance. Tell them to look for me.”
No wonder she was so friendly. It turned out that she was looking for a long-term partnership.
“Okay, Sister.”
Tang Wan wasn’t the kind of person who wouldn’t leave any room for negotiation. Maybe over time, she could come back.
Auntie Liu was about to send Tang Wan away when there was a knock on the door.
The two of them looked at each other, their eyes filled with a hint of panic.
“Auntie Liu, it’s me.”
A familiar voice came from outside. Auntie Liu finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Then she opened the door. Zhou Xiaoxia, a woman from the same unit, was indeed standing outside.
“Why are you here?”
Auntie Liu sighed angrily. She had almost thought that someone had reported them.
“I heard there’s meat here. Can you give me some?”
Zhou Xiaoxia’s eyes turned to Tang Wan. Tang Wan shook her head directly.
“I don’t have any.”
First, because she didn’t have any. Second, Zhou Xiaoxia had been looking into the house secretly. Her eyes were rolling around, and she didn’t look like a good person.
“Auntie Liu, my child hasn’t seen any oil or water for months. Can you give me some?”
Zhou Xiaoxia pleaded with Auntie Liu. Auntie Liu’s heart softened for a moment.
But thinking of Zhou Xiaoxia’s big mouth and tendency to gossip, she said, “There really isn’t any. Xiaoxia, you must have heard wrong.”
“I clearly saw them take meat. You’re so stingy!”
Zhou Xiaoxia stomped her feet angrily and then ran away.
Auntie Liu said to Tang Wan awkwardly, “Girl, Zhou Xiaoxia has a big mouth and loves to gossip. I don’t want to trade with her.”
“I understand.”
Tang Wan thought of Zhou Xiaoxia’s unkind gaze and reminded her, “Auntie, don’t send me off.
This person doesn’t have a good heart. She might do something irrational. You should quickly hide the meat at home.”
“You’re right, girl. You know the way. You should go now.”
Auntie Liu quickly sent Tang Wan out the door. She was obviously going to hide the meat.
Tang Wan was carrying her backpack. She had just left the family compound when she saw someone from the neighborhood committee shouting,
“Stop!”
Oh no, did that woman report them?
Tang Wan didn’t dare to stop. She took off running. She ran very fast, even though her backpack was empty.
What if they caught a few people who had bought her meat and confronted them?
So she ignored the people behind her who kept yelling at her to stop. She ran towards an alley with little traffic.
The two men from the neighborhood committee pointed at Tang Wan. “Stop, stop!”
Tang Wan glanced back at them. They weren’t close to her. How could she possibly throw herself into their hands?
Fortunately, she had already scouted the area. She turned into an alley. When there was no one around, she went into her space.
She could still hear footsteps outside. Tang Wan took a deep breath in her space.
My goodness, that was exciting!
It was a thrill. She had to be more careful in the future.
Fortunately, she had been taking advantage of every opportunity to secretly exercise in her space. She had also done some farm work.
Otherwise, with the original owner’s delicate body, she wouldn’t have been able to outrun them.
The people from the neighborhood committee searched for her for a while but couldn’t find her. They could only go to other places to look.
After this incident, Tang Wan didn’t want to sell anything anymore. She changed into her floral dress and tied her hair in pigtails.
She removed the dirty makeup on her face. The original owner had delicate and beautiful skin. Even without makeup, she was stunningly beautiful.
After calming her racing heart, Tang Wan made sure that no one was outside. Then she rode her bicycle out.
This time, she didn’t even bring her backpack. Sure enough, as she rode out, she saw the two men from the neighborhood committee squatting at the entrance of the alley.
Seeing that Tang Wan was a young woman carrying only a simple cloth bag, they glanced at her briefly and then looked away.
Tang Wan’s palms were sweating slightly as she gripped the handlebars of her bicycle. She rode calmly towards the state-owned restaurant nearby.
She locked her bicycle at the entrance of the restaurant and went inside, swinging her pigtails.
She took out her ration coupons and money from her pocket and ordered a plate of cabbage dumplings. They were full of meat.
They were authentic and tasted better than what the big restaurants made in the future.
She also packed a plate for Lu Huaijing and Tang Zhou. She took out her watch and looked at it.
It was two thirty. She could go to the sugar factory entrance early and wait. The results would be posted at three o’clock.
Tang Wan rode her bicycle leisurely around Sha Tu Town before arriving at the entrance of the sugar factory.
There were already many people gathered at the entrance, all nervously and anxiously staring at the bulletin board.
Tang Wan even saw Chunli from the morning. Her friend was still flattering her.
“Chunli, don’t worry. When you become a worker, don’t forget me.”
Peng Cai flattered Chunli carefully, with a gleam of confidence in her eyes.
“The exam is over. Let’s just see what happens.”
Chunli, the girl, was more relaxed. There were many other people who had taken the recruitment exam who were just as calm.
Tang Wan squeezed through the crowd and waited. Finally, at exactly three o’clock, someone from the sugar factory’s labor union came out with a red piece of paper.
“It’s out!”
