“Ding-dong.”
The doorbell rang.
Xu Chunian was about to stand up, but Bai Hui held her down. “Keep eating. I’ll go.”
Opening the door, Bai Hui was surprised to see who it was. “Huaixu? Come in.”
“Mom, I’m here to pick up Zhuzhu.” Jiang Huaixu looked tired. He must have rushed over right after finishing his work there.
“Zhuzhu is eating. You haven’t eaten at this time, and we just finished eating too. Come in.” Bai Hui stepped aside to let him in.
As soon as Jiang Huaixu entered the house, he subconsciously looked towards the dining room. Xu Chunian was there, acting cute with Xu Zhen. The latter seemed reluctant to pay attention to her, but his expression wasn’t as tense as before. She occasionally helped Zhuzhu with her food, and Zhuzhu was a well-behaved child, eating whatever she was given, her little mouth greasy.
The atmosphere was just right. It was him who felt like an outsider, out of place.
Xu Chunian, as if sensing something, glanced at the doorway. The man in his suit exuded charm. His cold eyes, when they met hers, revealed a complex emotion that Xu Chunian couldn’t quite understand.
“Huaixu?”
“Okay.”
Bai Hui added a new set of chopsticks, and Xu Chunian ladled a bowl of hot soup for him.
“Warm your stomach first.”
Everyone at the table was taken aback.
Jiang Huaixu was the first to react. “Thank you.”
Zhuzhu pushed her water cup towards her father.
Jiang Huaixu patted her head.
After dinner, Xu Zhen and Bai Hui walked them to the car.
Bai Hui placed Zhuzhu in the child seat. “Huaixu, next time you go on a business trip, just send Zhuzhu over. You can feel more at ease when you’re away.”
“I know.”
“Be careful on the road.” Bai Hui said with concern.
“Okay. You and Dad should go back to rest.”
Xu Zhen didn’t say anything but waved his hand, his gaze falling on Xu Chunian, who was behind him, fastening Zhuzhu’s seatbelt.
Watching the car disappear into the night, Bai Hui sighed with worry. “What do you think Niannian is up to this time?”
Xu Zhen shook his head. “It doesn’t seem like she’s putting on an act. When she comes back, she always has to cause a scene before she’s satisfied.”
“Huaixu is a good boy. How come Niannian suddenly…”
“Forget it. As long as she’s not following that Qin Yuan anymore, don’t say anything about her.” Xu Zhen turned to look at her.
“Who’s said anything about her? It’s all your fault. She’s completely out of control.” Bai Hui glared at him, then changed the subject. “But even though Niannian was a little spoiled and mischievous before, she wouldn’t be so extreme.”
“Who knows?” Xu Zhen turned and walked back. “I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting old, but I felt like I saw Niannian before she got married tonight.”
Bai Hui stopped walking. “You know, it’s like a dream.”
“Zhuzhu is so well-behaved. She doesn’t cry or fuss, and she can play by herself for the whole afternoon.” Xu Zhen’s voice softened. “I took her to buy toys this afternoon. She didn’t want anything. She just picked up a box of LEGO and wouldn’t let me buy anything else.”
“The more well-behaved she is, the more it makes me feel sorry for her.” Bai Hui closed the door. “Niannian has been causing trouble all year, and we haven’t seen much of Zhuzhu. When you brought her back today, I was still a little dazed. How did she grow up so fast?”
“Tomorrow, I’ll stop by and buy some toys for children. Whenever Zhuzhu comes over, they’ll be ready.” Xu Zhen took off his jacket.
Bai Hui didn’t say anything for a long time, her brow furrowed slightly. “I’m still not at ease. You should contact Doctor Chu tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
