Chapter 25: The Dream

That night

The soft moonlight gently caressed the branches, casting fragmented shadows on the ground.

In the quiet private room, two men with exceptional presence sat on the leather sofa, isolated from the noisy environment outside.

With a “thud,” a tablet fell onto the glass table. “Take a look; it’s all here. It’s just about that young master from the Qin family; there’s nothing else,” Mu Bai said.

Jiang Huaixu reached over to grab it, skimming through the contents a few times.

“To be honest, that guy really has patience. He keeps trying, and Qin Yuan has gone through one girl after another, yet neither of them has made any progress,” Mu Bai mused, stroking his chin. “Do girls nowadays really like this type?”

Jiang Huaixu glanced at him indifferently.

“With so many choices, why hang on to just one tree?” Mu Bai raised an eyebrow, his beautiful peach blossom eyes glimmering with a hint of affection for everyone, but at that moment, there was also a sense of disappointment. He casually handed Jiang Huaixu a nearby classic cup.

Jiang Huaixu accepted it, staring blankly at the orange liquid inside for a long while before speaking. “Do you think it’s possible for a body to have two souls?”

Mu Bai was startled, almost dropping the cup. “What? Have you started talking nonsense because you’re feeling down?”

Jiang Huaixu weakly tugged at his lips. “Just self-deception.”

He lifted the cup and downed the drink in one go.

Mu Bai clicked his tongue. “I really don’t understand your melancholic feelings about love. Are you expecting her to come back?”

“To be honest, in this circle, marriage is just a bargaining chip. When rules are broken, those who break them get cast aside. Don’t you find that somewhat ridiculous?” Mu Bai continued.

Jiang Huaixu slammed the empty cup onto the table. “If it weren’t for Xu Chunian, I wouldn’t be getting married.”

Mu Bai poured him another drink, looking at him in disbelief. “You’re hopeless.”

He held back from saying something harsh, as he had witnessed how Jiang Huaixu had dealt with everything over the years. Back when the company was on the rise, Xu Chunian was clamoring for a divorce, and with Zhuzhu being too young to be left at home, Jiang Huaixu had to take care of her alone. It was the first time Mu Bai saw that kind of expression on a man who usually remained composed, slumped against the hospital wall, sitting on the floor, utterly disheveled and lost in thought.

He never imagined Jiang Huaixu could look so helpless.

“So what now? Are you just going to drag this out?” Mu Bai shook his drink.

“I don’t know.” A hint of confusion flashed in Jiang Huaixu’s eyes.

Mu Bai sighed and shook his head. “There are plenty of flowers in the world; why cling to just one?”

“By the way,” Mu Bai suddenly turned to the indifferent man, “the project in the south of the city is reportedly related to the Qin family.”

“I’ll handle it personally.” Jiang Huaixu halted the motion of swirling his drink, his gaze growing cold.

“If—”

“There are no ifs.” The man’s voice was resolute and emotionless, leaving no room for discussion.

Late at night

Xu Chunian slept restlessly. In her dreams, it felt like she was peering into someone else’s life, fragments of logic swirling chaotically. For two consecutive nights, a man with an indistinct face had been in her dreams, saying, “We are meant to be together.”

After he spoke, she would plunge into an abyss.

The dream shifted endlessly, and the overwhelming sense of helplessness drove her to despair, especially when she pushed Zhuzhu down the stairs; she was powerless to stop it.

In the darkness, Xu Chunian suddenly opened her eyes. The sensation in her arms was real, and she gasped for breath, turning to look at the chubby little bundle in her embrace.

She had dreamt again—dreamt of her 24-year-old self.

If her 24-year-old self really fell for Qin Yuan, would it feel the same as when she liked Jiang Huaixu at 18?
