The teacher saw Zhuzhu running over and bent down to ask, “Jiang Yu Chu, is this your mommy?”
Zhuzhu nodded and reached out to Xu Chunian.
“Madam, you can take Yu Chu now,” the teacher said.
“Thank you.”
“Baby, say goodbye to the teacher,” Xu Chunian led Zhuzhu.
Zhuzhu waved at the teacher. The teacher was flattered and hurriedly said goodbye to them.
After they walked out, Xu Chunian took out the small helmet she bought on the way and put it on Zhuzhu’s head. She put on the larger one herself, then held Zhuzhu in front of her. In the midst of surprised stares, she left behind a cool and confident silhouette.
Zhuzhu had never ridden this before. She pressed her back tightly against Xu Chunian, her eyes shut tight.
“Taking off!”
All she could hear was the rushing wind.
Zhuzhu curiously opened one eye. The scenery around her was moving backward, and she was amazed.
At that moment, they passed a luxury car.
“Mommy, what’s that? It’s so cool,” the little boy exclaimed, pointing at the small electric scooter next to them.
The woman, adorned with jewels, looked in the direction of his finger and clicked her tongue. “Another woman who thinks she can turn into a phoenix from a sparrow.”
This was the first time she had seen such a vehicle here. She guessed it was the mistress of some rich man, who had benefited along with her child.
“What’s a phoenix from a sparrow?”
“Nothing,” the woman softened her tone.
“I want to ride that too.”
“You’re so pathetic,” the woman snapped. “You want to drive a luxury car. What’s the point of riding that?”
*
Zhuzhu’s two little braids were happily dancing.
The scooter stopped at a shopping mall. Xu Chunian carried her down, took off her helmet, and squatted in front of Zhuzhu. “Baby, it’s still early. I’ll take you to eat something delicious, okay?”
Zhuzhu blinked at her and pointed at the small electric scooter, which was already locked.
“After we eat, I’ll ride this to take you to find Daddy.”
Zhuzhu nodded.
Xu Chunian then led her into the mall.
They found a fast food restaurant and chose a window seat. Xu Chunian ordered a few snacks, a Coke for herself, and a freshly squeezed orange juice for Zhuzhu.
The food came out quickly. Xu Chunian opened the packaging box, scooped out the center of the egg tart with a spoon, blew on it to cool it down, and fed it to Zhuzhu.
Zhuzhu opened her mouth, her eyes shining brightly.
“Is it delicious?”
Zhuzhu nodded, and Xu Chunian continued to feed her.
After two bites, Zhuzhu took the spoon herself, scooped a bite, and fed it to Xu Chunian.
“Thank you, baby.”
Xu Chunian blew on the hot McNuggets for her.
Her phone buzzed. She took off her gloves, pulled it out, and glanced at it.
There was a friend request in WeChat.
The profile picture was clearly a couple’s photo, the username was a period, and the request reason was simple and straightforward: Jiang Huaixu.
Xu Chunian was surprised again. They didn’t even have each other’s WeChat. She clicked “accept.”
A question mark appeared on the other side.
Xu Chunian was speechless for a moment. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, quickly typing:
[I’m almost there. Traffic jam on the road.]
The other side didn’t reply. A spoon touched her lips. She turned her head, and it was Zhuzhu feeding her.
Xu Chunian opened her mouth and ate. “Thank you, Zhuzhu.”
She curiously clicked on the man’s Moments. He had set it to be visible only for a year, and in that year, Jiang Huaixu hadn’t posted anything.
She put away her phone and continued eating. After she was full, there was a blind box left on the tray.
Xu Chunian used a wet wipe to clean Zhuzhu’s greasy little hands.
“Zhuzhu, open this and see what’s inside.”
Zhuzhu took it and tore it open from the small opening that Xu Chunian had made.
It was a My Melody riding a rocking horse.
“So cute. Do you like it, Zhuzhu?”
Zhuzhu nodded.
“Let’s go find Daddy,” Xu Chunian held it for her and took her wrist.
