Chapter 10: Planning for Her Future

Niu Erhua had been banging on the door for half an hour, her hand hurting from knocking, yet no one came to open it. She thought about all the work still waiting for her at home.

Glaring at the old woman beside her, she figured since Lu Qinglin was already back, he could deal with it if he wanted. If not, the old lady could starve here for all she cared—at least then she wouldn’t have to waste her energy looking after the old thing.

With that in mind, Niu Erhua cursed under her breath and turned to leave.

Su Tangxue had completely lost her sleep due to all the knocking. Only after the noise finally stopped did she get dressed and climb out of bed.

Lu Qinglin was nowhere to be seen—she had no idea where he’d gone.

She did a quick wash, then took out the egg sponge cake her father had bought from the supply and marketing cooperative and ate it with plain boiled water.

That would be her breakfast for the day.

Holding the cake in her hand, she walked toward the door while eating, wanting to see when Lu Qinglin would return. She planned to ask him to go with her to the town’s cooperative to buy some rice, oil, and seasonings.

The house was too empty—lacking even the basics, which made things inconvenient.

But since Lu Qinglin wasn’t home, she didn’t dare open the door wide, only peeked out through the crack.

And what she saw shocked her—a person was sitting in front of the door.

It was around nine in the morning, and although the sun wasn’t blazing yet, the elderly lady outside already had sweat beading on her forehead. Her face looked utterly haggard, like she could collapse at any moment.

Worried something might happen to her, Su Tangxue quickly opened the door.

“Grandma, are you here to see Lu Qinglin?” Su Tangxue asked cautiously.

Wasn’t the woman who knocked earlier looking for Lu Qinglin too? Su Tangxue figured this old lady must be here for the same reason.

“Huh? What?” Yun Xiangrui, being quite old, was a bit hard of hearing.

Su Tangxue had to lean closer and repeat herself.

Upon hearing her grandson’s name, Yun Xiangrui’s cloudy eyes lit up.

“Lu Qinglin is my grandson. I came to see my grandson. Is he home?”

So this was Lu Qinglin’s grandmother. Su Tangxue finally remembered who she was.

But the woman in front of her now looked completely different from the kind and warm figure in her memory.

The sun outside was getting stronger, so Su Tangxue quickly helped the old lady inside.

“He’ll be back soon, Grandma. Come rest inside for a bit—it’s too hot out here.”

“Thank you, dear.” Yun Xiangrui smiled and thanked her cheerfully.

“You’re welcome, Grandma.”

Su Tangxue helped her sit down in a cool spot, then went into the kitchen to pour her a bowl of water.

Worried the old woman hadn’t had breakfast, she brought over two more sponge cakes.

Sure enough, Yun Xiangrui hadn’t eaten—Niu Erhua had dumped her here without even feeding her.

With nothing else to do at home, Su Tangxue brought over a small stool and sat beside the old lady to chat.

When Lu Qinglin returned home, the first thing he saw was the warm image of an elderly and a young woman chatting under the eaves.

Hearing the door open, Su Tangxue looked up and saw Lu Qinglin entering with several large bags in his hands.

Her eyes lit up, and she happily ran over to him.

At that moment, she felt like a child eagerly awaiting her parents’ return from town with goodies.

“You’re back! I’ve been waiting forever—where’d you go?”

“I went to the supply and marketing cooperative to get some things. Sorry I’m late.”

Su Tangxue tried to take the bags from his hands, but Lu Qinglin wouldn’t let her, carrying them inside himself.

He only stopped when he reached the old lady.

“Grandma, I’m Lu Qinglin.”

Hearing that this was indeed her grandson, Yun Xiangrui’s dry eyes welled up with tears.

Su Tangxue figured they must have a lot to catch up on, so she quietly put the things away and returned to her room.

After lying down for a while, the door opened. She looked up and saw Lu Qinglin standing there.

“Su Tangxue, let’s talk.” She nodded, signaling him to close the door.

“What do you want to talk about?”

Lu Qinglin shared his plan of taking his grandmother in and told her about the hardships the old lady had suffered in the homes of his eldest uncle, third uncle, and fourth uncle over the years.

In those days, every family in the village was short on food. His relatives resented the old lady for not working and eating too much, treating her poorly and tossing her around like a burden.

Sometimes, they even cursed her and wished she’d die soon. She was barely clothed or fed in those households and constantly scolded.

Lu Qinglin couldn’t stand it any longer, so he wanted to bring her to live with him. Once he got promoted, he’d even take her with him to the military post.

Worried Su Tangxue might disagree, he promised to handle all the chores and care for his grandmother himself.

Su Tangxue thought it was a great idea and agreed.

After all, she didn’t have to do anything herself—Lu Qinglin could handle it however he liked.

Besides, apart from being hard of hearing, Grandma seemed perfectly fine.

After finishing the conversation about Grandma, she lay back down on the bed. Being woken up early had made her sleepy again.

But Lu Qinglin was still standing by the bed, looking at her, which puzzled her.

“Is there something else?”

Lu Qinglin nodded, sat at the edge of the bed, and looked down at her.

“I’ve already submitted the marriage report. But there’s something I need to clarify—my leave this time is only for two weeks.”

Besides going to the supply cooperative, his other important errand that day was sending the marriage report via the post office.

“Oh! That’s fine. In two weeks, Grandma and I will just go with you to join the military base.”

Su Tangxue relaxed, thinking he was about to say something serious.

That was it?

Lu Qinglin pressed his lips tightly together.

After a moment of hesitation, he said, “You can’t come with me yet. My rank still isn’t high enough.”

“What?”

Su Tangxue sat up abruptly, shocked.

Unwilling to believe it, she pressed further, “Aren’t you a battalion commander?”

Lu Qinglin frowned. “I never said I was a battalion commander. Where did you hear that?”

Su Tangxue was stunned. Was her memory wrong?

Wait…

In the book, Lu Qinglin only became a battalion commander two years later, and Ning Honglian only joined him after that.

Because things had recently strayed a bit from the original plot, she had ignored those details.

Now that she thought about it carefully, it was indeed strange.

Who told the original Su Tangxue that Lu Qinglin was a battalion commander?

She looked at Lu Qinglin again.

“Didn’t you and Ning Honglian write letters saying you were a battalion commander?”

The original Su Tangxue had overheard a conversation between Ning Honglian and Li Chuchun, which was how she found out Lu Qinglin supposedly held that rank.

“No. I never mentioned my rank to her.”

Su Tangxue looked directly into Lu Qinglin’s eyes. They were steady and unwavering.

He didn’t seem to be lying—so the problem must lie with Ning Honglian.

Su Tangxue told Lu Qinglin everything she had heard and seen.

Of course, she had her own reasons—she wanted Lu Qinglin to stay away from Ning Honglian, especially since they were about to get married.

Even though she was now the one marrying Lu Qinglin, who’s to say the “main characters” wouldn’t still be pulled back together by the force of the plot?

It was also a reminder to herself—not to put all her eggs in one basket.

The 1980s were full of opportunity, and it was already 1975 now. In just a couple of years, the college entrance exam would be reinstated. Once the state policy loosened, she could start a small business or something.

She had to start planning for her own future.
