“Soul Transmigrated to the ’70s: The Officer Male Lead Became My Fiancé” Chapter 23

Chapter 23: Zhang Yunlan Gets Chased by Wasps

Liao Haimei was also afraid of being reported to the team leader. Anyone with eyes could tell what was going on. If the team leader got angry, not only would she lose work points, she might even be punished with heavy labor like cleaning out the pigsty.

She felt uneasy. It wasn’t worth it—for just one meal of meat.

She turned and yelled at Zhang Yunlan, “Hurry up and give the rabbit back!”

Zhang Yunlan hadn’t expected Liao Haimei to change her attitude so quickly. Her hand, gripping the rabbit, stiffened. She still tried to argue.

“Sister Haimei, I’m the one who killed the rabbit. Why should I give it to them?”

She sounded extremely wronged.

She had caught a duck that was already in her mouth—how could she let it fly away so easily?

Su Tangxue could see Zhang Yunlan didn’t want to give it up and let out a cold snort.

“Even if you hadn’t stepped on this rabbit, it would’ve died from blood loss. It just so happened that you were the one who stepped on it. If you don’t hand it over now, I’ll go tell the team leader that you’re hoarding someone else’s stuff. Let’s see how you like being punished by scrubbing the pigsty.”

Su Tangxue’s words were both logical and threatening. Zhang Yunlan could only glare at her angrily, unwillingly handing the rabbit over.

“Take it, then. Just a stupid rabbit. As if I care.”

She threw the rabbit forcefully onto the ground, covering it in dust.

Su Tangxue walked over, picked it up, patted it clean, and snapped, “Some people say they don’t care, but won’t let go of other people’s things. Who knows what they’re really thinking.”

Zhang Yunlan was so angry she burst into tears. “Su Tangxue, I already gave you the rabbit! What’s that supposed to mean?”

To her, it sounded like Su Tangxue was calling her a petty villain.

“Oh? You’re upset? I didn’t even name names—why are you taking it personally?”

Zhang Yunlan was fuming, her face practically twisted from anger. But if she argued now, people would just say she was taking it personally.

“All right, everyone’s had enough rest. Let’s get back to work! The sun will be setting soon.”

Liao Haimei didn’t want to continue bickering with Su Tangxue and quickly urged everyone back to work.

Once she got her work points, she’d still get her share of meat anyway.

After everyone left, Su Tangxue quickly took the rabbit to comfort her injured fourth brother.

“Fourth Brother, you’re amazing! I didn’t think you could actually catch a rabbit!”

Hearing his little sister’s praise, the gloom on Lu Shan’s face disappeared completely. He smiled confidently.

“Of course. Who do you think your fourth brother is? With my marksmanship, I could easily rank second in the village.”

“Then who’s number one?”

Lu Shan was momentarily choked by her question. His boasting fell flat—his sister only cared about who was better than him.

He had to admit, the top ranker really was incredible. But then again, that person was family now, so it didn’t sting too badly.

“Number one is Lu Qinglin. When he was little, he was amazing at hitting birds. Out of ten stones, he’d hit nine.”

Su Tangxue nodded, pretending to understand. She never knew Lu Qinglin was that good!

“All right, Little Sis. Watch the rabbit for me. I’m gonna try to catch another one before it gets dark.”

“Okay! Go ahead, I’ll wait here for you.” Su Tangxue waved him off.

She then spent her time caring for the rabbit and a baby bird.

Meanwhile, the more Zhang Yunlan thought about it, the angrier she got. She hacked at the pig grass in front of her like it was Su Tangxue, each chop more vicious than the last.

Her pride had been thoroughly crushed by Su Tangxue today. She felt like a complete joke.

Those educated youths had no sense either—not one of them defended her. Thanks to them, Su Tangxue would probably be eating meat tonight.

The more she thought, the more bitter she felt. Suddenly, she spotted a long stick nearby.

She remembered there was a beehive in the tree to the left—wasn’t that where Su Tangxue had gone earlier?

At the thought, Zhang Yunlan’s eyes gleamed, and she began crouching through the pig grass.

Su Tangxue was sitting beneath the tree, playing with the rabbit, completely unaware that she was being targeted.

Zhang Yunlan parted the grass and looked up at the tree. The beehive was right above Su Tangxue’s head.

Imagining Su Tangxue’s pitiful, swollen face later, Zhang Yunlan felt a rush of excitement.

It was time for Su Tangxue to suffer a little. Let’s see if she dares to act so arrogant again.

Once she knocked the hive down with one hit and ran away quickly, no one would know it was her.

With the plan set, Zhang Yunlan went to retrieve the stick. She didn’t know who had placed it there, but it was perfectly timed.

She picked it up and judged the height—she could probably reach the hive. But just as she was about to move—

“Zhang Yunlan, what are you doing with that stick?”

A young educated youth called out behind her, eyeing the stick in her hand curiously.

Zhang Yunlan looked around quickly. No one else seemed to be paying attention, and she relaxed.

“Mind your own business. Worry about yourself first!”

She pushed the person aside and kept walking. As long as she was fast enough, no one would catch her.

All she could think about now was revenge—nothing else mattered.

Meanwhile, Lu Shan was walking back, discouraged. The rabbits were too clever—at the slightest sound, they bolted back into their holes. He returned, frustrated and empty-handed.

“Little Sis—” he started to call out, but then he spotted a long bamboo stick extending from the bushes.

He immediately sensed danger. He ran over and pulled Su Tangxue up by the hand.

“Fourth—” Su Tangxue tried to speak, but Lu Shan quickly covered her mouth and dragged her into the nearby shrubbery.

While she was still confused, a beehive fell from above where she had just been sitting. The bees swarmed around it, buzzing angrily.

Lu Shan seized the moment, pulled out a slingshot, and fired at another wasp nest on the opposite side of the tree.

A second later, Zhang Yunlan’s screams erupted from the grass.

Only then did Su Tangxue realize—she had just been targeted.

If her fourth brother hadn’t come back in time, she would’ve been the one getting swarmed by bees.

Zhang Yunlan had planned to hide in the bushes until the bees left. But instead, a wasp nest fell right on her head and into the basket behind her.

There was no time to run. A swarm of wasps attacked her, stinging her face multiple times.

Meanwhile, Liao Haimei was counting farm tools and getting ready to head back when she heard Zhang Yunlan’s screams from afar.

By the time the others reacted, only screams and cursing could be heard.

They had no choice but to drop everything and run.

The worst part? Zhang Yunlan kept running after them, causing several others to get stung during their escape.

Doggie, one of the youths with sharp eyes and quick reflexes, saw it was wasps and immediately dove into the grass, successfully avoiding the attack.

Afterward, Su Tangxue emerged from the bushes and watched the others flee in panic. She looked up at her fourth brother, admiration shining in her eyes.

“Fourth Brother, you’re amazing! If it weren’t for you, I’d be the one looking like a pig head right now.”

“Of course. You’re my little sister. If I take you out, it’s my job to keep you safe. How could I let anything happen to you?”

“Mm-hmm. You’re the best, Fourth Brother. I think… maybe I shouldn’t come out with you next time.”

Who knew what kind of accident might happen next time?
