Chapter 41
vIt was in this confused state that Wu Xing was taken to Song Ruan’s home.
The house in front of me is not big. The bottom floor is made of stone for nearly 1 meter, and there is an earth wall on top. The stone looks quite new, so it should have been built not long ago.
“This is my home, come in.”
“Oh, okay.” Wu Xing nodded, followed Song Ruan, and stepped over the threshold of the yard.
When I entered the yard, I found that it was tidy and the ground was very clean.
In the yard, a tall and thin man was sitting on a stone bench against the wall, flipping through a book with his head down in the still bright light.
Wu Xing even looked at it carefully for a while and saw five big words written on the paper: “History of Western Philosophy”.
Wu Xing opened her mouth in surprise. She had not been to school since she was 12 years old, but she had seen this book on her teacher’s desk.
In Wu Xing’s opinion, this kind of book is only read by extremely cultured people.
Seeing Wu Xing staring at Song Wen blankly, Song Ruan smiled, “This is my elder brother, Song Wen.”
Hearing the sound, Song Wen, who was browsing in the sea of books, turned around and looked over, with a look of surprise in his eyes.
As dusk fell, everything seemed to be covered with a dark veil, but Song Wen could clearly see the graceful figure opposite her, like a beautiful girl walking out of a classical painting.
Being stared at by the man with a focused gaze, Wu Xing, who had always been fearless, was momentarily flustered.
“Hello, my name is Wu Xing.”
“Comrade Wu Xing, hello, are you my sister’s friend? I don’t think I’ve seen you before.”
Song Ruan was amused by her elder brother’s words “Comrade Wu Xing”. Her elder brother was nervous.
“Brother, I’m here to meet you for a blind date. It’s the new blind date introduced by the matchmaker.”
Under the cold night, on the village road, two young figures were walking side by side, not too far away.
Song Wen wanted to say something but didn’t know how to start, so he scratched his head and thought hard for a while.
Wu Xing has always been a quick-witted person. After she calmed down from the tension, she was the first to speak.
“Song Wen, what do you think of me?”
“Ah?” Song Wen stopped and didn’t react.
Wu Xing said decisively: “I think you are great, I want to marry you.”
Without giving Song Wen a chance to interrupt, Wu Xing finished her words in one breath: “If we get married, I don’t want a dowry, but I want to bring my brother to live with me.”
After Wu Xing finished speaking, she looked at him anxiously.
Many people were unwilling to accept her condition. Firstly, food was scarce in every family now and it was not easy to have one more mouth to feed. Secondly, her father was still alive and she had a stepmother at home, so many people were afraid of causing trouble.
Hearing her straightforward words, Song Wen’s heart skipped a beat. Fortunately, the light was dim now and she should not be able to see the red tips of his ears.
Seeing that he didn’t speak for a long time, Wu Xing felt that he was rejecting her. Her heart seemed to be twisted, and she felt a little uncomfortable.
Wu Xing plucked up her courage and pulled up the slender hand next to her.
His hands were big and warm, with thin calluses between his fingertips, which made people feel warm and numb inside.
“Don’t refuse yet, think about it, okay? My brother and I both eat little and are very hardworking.”
Wu Xing counted the little value she had.
“By the way, the aunties in my village often say that I look like a good fertile woman and I can give birth to many children for you.”
The redness on Song Wen’s ears had spread to his face. He turned his head away, not daring to look at her: “You don’t have to be like this…”
Wu Xing has been on many blind dates. There were some guys she didn’t like and some who rejected her, but she never cared.
After all, she has always regarded her marriage as a transaction.
But I never thought that one day, I would feel so sad when facing rejection.
“Okay, I understand.” Wu Xing put down his hand.
He is indeed a good person, and she is probably not worthy of him, so there is nothing wrong with him rejecting her.
“You and your brother can eat more. I am capable of earning money to support the family. Also, when it comes to having children…you don’t have to have too many. It’s very hard.”
Wu Xing didn’t seem to understand: “What, what do you mean?”
“Hmm? Aren’t you talking about the future?”
Wu Xing couldn’t believe it: “You… accepted it?”
Feeling her happy eyes, Song Wen smiled unconsciously, “Well, I still need to talk to my parents about your brother, but it shouldn’t be a big problem.”
“Wow, Song Wen, you are so nice.”
The delighted girl stood on tiptoes and gave him a passionate kiss on the cheek.
Song Wen was a little dazed by the kiss.
Even when he got home, he could still feel the wetness on his face.
“Mom and Dad, why aren’t you asleep yet?”
He sent Wu Xing back to Xishui Village and came back. It was almost ten o’clock now, and his parents were still not asleep.
“Come and sit down.” Ye Hongmei pulled him to the table and sat down. “My younger sister has told us. Tell your parents what you think of the girl you saw tonight.”
“She is very good, I… like her very much.” Song Wen felt a little embarrassed to say this to his parents.
But Song’s father and mother were very happy: “Oh, that’s great.”
“But if she wants to get married in the future, she wants to bring her brother to live with her.”
Song Ruan had already done ideological work on this matter for the two elders, so when Song Wen brought it up now, they had no objection.
“Son, what’s most important is that you like her. When I heard you say tonight that you didn’t want to get married, I felt so sad. Fortunately, our ancestors blessed us and sent a girl you like here.” Ye Hongmei said while clasping her hands together.
After Ye Hongmei said this, Song Wen’s face turned even redder. What he had just said during the meal was now slapped in the face…
The reserved Father Song also had a smile on his face at this time.
“Then let’s sell all the wheat from this autumn harvest and keep the coarse grains for food. We can also see if we can exchange the work points we saved in the team for some money to pay for the eldest brother’s wedding and build a house.”
People are in high spirits when good things happen. Mr. and Mrs. Song eagerly discussed the next arrangements.
But what they didn’t know was that subsequent changes would disrupt all their plans.
