Chapter 12: Medical Unit, Part 2
The entire morning involved only basic tasks simple bandaging, removing stitches, and some rehabilitation treatments. In contrast, a regular hospital would have already handled several complex surgeries by now, making the unit seem unusually relaxed.
Captain Song noticed Lin You’s slight discomfort but saw she didn’t show any dissatisfaction, quietly reading patient records and medical texts instead. This reminded him of Captain Qin, who, during special forces operations, could maintain long periods of silence reportedly the longest among the troops.
Meanwhile, at the nurses’ station, discussions about Lin You had already begun.
Nurse Zhang remarked, “Is she really 26? She looks only a year or two older than us.”
Nurse Bei nodded, “She said it herself.”
Dr. Liu chimed in, “Her eyelashes are so long! How did someone as rugged as the captain manage to win over a beauty like her?”
Nurse Nan explained, “They’ve known each other since childhood.”
Dr. Liu added, “No wonder Captain Qin turned down Lieutenant Qiong Hua’s advances so many times. She didn’t believe he was actually married!”
Nurse Zhang said, “She always acted superior with us. None of us like her.”
Nurse Bei replied, “But she’s talented, and the team leader appreciates her.”
Nurse Nan said, “Now that the real deal is here, I wonder if she’ll stay so smug. The captain’s wife is not only beautiful and well educated, but she’s also down to earth.”
Everyone laughed when Dr. Liu joked, “Her voice is so sweet I got chills when she addressed me! Can you imagine how the captain feels every day?”
Head Nurse Deng soon walked over, coughing to gather their attention. “What’s everyone doing here? Got nothing to do?” she chided, though Dr. Liu quickly teased her, “Come on, Nurse Deng, you’re just as curious!”
Lin You found herself quite amused.
As lunch approached, Captain Song said, “Alright, Dr. Lin, time for lunch! Will you go home or join us in the mess hall?”
“I’ll join you,” she replied.
When they reached the dining hall, the kitchen chief immediately noticed her. “So, a new doctor in the medical unit?”
The nurse replied, “Yes, and she’s the captain’s wife.” The chief fell silent, fearing he might say the wrong thing.
Following everyone to a table, Lin You noticed how empty the hall was and voiced her curiosity.
Dr. Liu explained, “We usually eat at staggered times. Once we’re done, the soldiers come in.” As if on cue, a line of soldiers entered, including Qin Lang and his squad leader, Li Yang.
Standing by the door, Lin You felt their eyes on her, so she turned back to her seat. The kitchen chief then approached, suggesting, “Dr. Lin, follow me, I’ll take you around back.”
As she passed by Qin Lang, he didn’t look up, yet she could sense he was upset. If she’d known there’d be so many people, she’d have preferred to cook at home.
That afternoon, more soldiers visited, many with minor issues likely just curious about her. Feeling uncomfortable, she headed to the nurses’ station.
Nurse Deng invited her to sit, trying to ease her mood. Through casual conversation, Lin You learned about her colleagues’ backgrounds: Nurse Nan and Nurse Bei were from rural areas, working their way up. Head Nurse Deng came from a modest family and was around Qin Lang’s age but hadn’t yet married. Lin You was surprised to learn this.
Nurse Nan leaned over, whispering, “Our head nurse has a crush on Dan Ye, but he doesn’t feel the same.”
“Who’s Dan Ye?” Lin You asked.
“The captain’s deputy,” Nurse Nan replied.
Their whispered conversation amused the head nurse, who blushed but appreciated the encouragement.
After returning to her clinic, Dr. Liu struck up a conversation, and Lin You found it refreshing to chat freely with another woman.
Before the day ended, Captain Song announced, “From now on, lunch will be delivered to the medical unit from the kitchen.” Dr. Liu and others cheered at the news no more awkward moments in the mess hall, especially after training sessions when it was crowded.
Just before clocking out, someone called, “Captain, are you here to pick up Dr. Lin?”
“Yes,” Qin Lang’s brief response caught Lin You’s attention.
Lin You hadn’t expected him to pick her up, but she said her goodbyes, took off her lab coat, and gathered her things. As she left, everyone continued their light hearted remarks.
“Looks like Captain really cares about Dr. Lin,” someone said.
“He’s unexpectedly thoughtful.”
“They’re actually a perfect match.”
“I wonder how Qiong Hua would react if she saw them together.”
Qin Lang watched as Lin You walked over, admiring her in uniform. She might not look imposing, but she carried an unmistakable, professional charm.
