Chapter 59: Unexpected Events
Suddenly, it was Lin You’s turn to be on duty tonight. Standing by the window and gazing at the starry sky outside, she couldn’t help but think of Qin Lang.
She wondered where he was at this moment, what he was doing, and if he was about to come back.
The head nurse noticed her worried expression and sat down beside her, softly asking, “Dr. Lin, are you missing Captain Qin?”
Lin You nodded silently.
The head nurse continued, “He’s been away for about a week, right?”
Lin You nodded again, then turned to ask, “Head Nurse, is Shan Ye still staying with the team?”
The head nurse smiled in response, “Yes, after all, the military training hasn’t finished yet.”
Lin You thought that her senior, Wang Xin, would be leaving soon.
She turned her head to ask again, “When do you expect it to end?”
“About three more days,” the head nurse replied.
“Oh, that’s soon.”
The head nurse left, and Lin You continued to gaze outside.
At that moment, there was a knock on the door.
Lin You turned to find it was Wang Xin. She stood up and curiously asked, “Senior, what brings you here?”
Wang Xin waved for her to sit down while he took a seat in the chair next to her.
“We’re leaving in a few days, and since you’re on duty today, I thought I’d come by and chat with you.”
“Also to say goodbye.”
Lin You politely responded, “Senior, you’re too kind. I should have come to say goodbye to you.”
Hearing her say this, Wang Xin couldn’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment, but he still maintained a smile.
He spoke again, “We’ve both been busy during our time here, and haven’t had a chance to talk.”
“Yes, I was wondering what you wanted to chat about,” Lin You replied, feeling a bit awkward and unable to look him in the eye.
Wang Xin, however, casually answered, “How about we talk about our lives after graduation?”
Lin You nodded in agreement and asked first, “Senior, how come we suddenly lost contact after graduation? I thought you would continue with your PhD?”
Wang Xin smiled and replied, “Back then, the navy special forces were recruiting military doctors, and I just wanted to give it a try. I didn’t expect to be selected. During my time working, I also pursued a doctorate, and I just graduated last year.”
“You’re still as excellent as before, Senior.”
Then, Wang Xin carefully asked his question, “Junior, we both studied cardiology, but in this grassroots health team, there aren’t many opportunities to showcase your skills.”
“Don’t you feel like all those years of study are wasted?”
“Don’t you feel any regret?”
Lin You hadn’t expected him to touch on her feelings so directly. In fact, she often pondered this when things were quiet. There were hardly any cardiology surgeries here, it was manageable for a short time, but what about in the long term?
Was she really going to give up her years of effort like this?
Seeing that Qin Lang was very fond of this place, he wasn’t likely to leave anytime soon. What about her? Would she have to stay here forever?
To be honest, Qin Lang had never brought up this issue with her, perhaps he hadn’t even considered it?
This question left her at a loss for words.
Wang Xin noticed her apparent distress and realized he had said too much.
He quickly comforted her, “Actually, this place is pretty good. At least you and Captain Qin don’t have to live apart. It’s clear he cares about you.”
“Sometimes life is like this; not everything can go as you wish.”
“It depends on what you care about more.”
Lin You nodded, agreeing with him. For now, she cared more about Qin Lang, she would think about the future later.
Out of courtesy, Lin You asked Wang Xin, “So, Senior, have you always been working in cardiology?”
Wang Xin nodded and began to share his insights from these years in cardiology, discussing cases he had handled, successful surgeries, and academic articles he had published.
Lin You was very interested in what he was saying. Seeing her look of admiration, Wang Xin also explained some practical issues that could arise in procedures, along with some precautions.
As for the latest theories in cardiology, Lin You was aware of them because Professor Song would regularly update her on them, she just lacked practical experience.
She enviously said, “Senior, that’s impressive, being able to independently handle so many surgeries.”
“You just lack practice. You’re meticulous and have strong hands on skills, given the opportunity, you’ll definitely be able to do even better than me in the future.”
“Thank you for sharing this with me, Senior. If there’s a chance in the future, please teach me more.”
“Sure.”
After talking some more, Wang Xin left.
At that moment, Qin Lang and his companions were in a tranquil mountain area, taking turns to rest and conserve their energy in preparation for the ambush the next morning.
The night was still, broken only by the occasional chirping of insects.
Qin Lang also looked up at the moon, thinking of Lin You being on duty tonight.
She should be looking at the moon now too because she had said that no matter where they were, looking at the starry sky at night was a way for them to express their longing for each other.
At this moment, Qin Lang truly understood why ancient people expressed their longing through the moon.
At dawn, the sky began to brighten with a faint glow, gradually dispelling the darkness.
Qin Lang and his team had already awakened, vigilantly watching their surroundings. Suddenly, they spotted a group of figures moving slowly toward the border.
The actions of these people seemed somewhat mysterious, causing unease.
Qin Lang immediately signaled for everyone to remain quiet and closely observe the movements of these individuals.
Once all the figures reached the ambush zone, Qin Lang ordered them to open fire.
The gunfire erupted in waves as bullets rained down on the enemy.
The opposing group was clearly prepared, and they began to return fire.
The battle grew intense, with neither side yielding. Qin Lang realized that this fight would be more challenging than expected.
He quickly adjusted their combat tactics, and gradually, the enemy’s firepower weakened noticeably.
Only sporadic gunfire was heard.
Qin Lang instructed everyone to remain silent and wait, while reminding them through the headset “The people on the other side are desperate, don’t be easily fooled.”
“Each group should not act without orders.”
By noon, the enemy showed signs of weakening and began to surrender. Qin Lang indicated for everyone to remain calm.
It wasn’t until evening that the enemy finally approached the front.
Qin Lang felt they must be well-prepared and still did not respond to them.
Sure enough, after Li Yang fired a probing shot, the enemy quickly returned fire, and soon everything ended, only to find that Lu Li had somehow become separated from the group.
Qin Lang’s heart tightened, sensing something was off. He quickly picked up the communication device and anxiously shouted into the headset, “Lu Li! Lu Li! If you hear me, please respond!”
However, the communication channel was silent, with no response at all.
Qin Lang realized that Lu Li might be in trouble and swiftly ordered his team members to disperse and search.
Sure enough, under a tree, he found Lu Li lying on the ground without any gear, and he noticed two lifeless enemies lying nearby as well.
Blood was oozing from Lu Li’s abdomen. Qin Lang rushed over to assess his vital signs, discovering there was still breathing and a pulse.
Upon further inspection, he noticed the wound was very close to the heart.
This area was the closest to their base, so he turned and asked, “Is Wang Xin still at the base?”
“Yes.”
“Contact Captain Song immediately to prepare the operating room. Wang Xin and Dr. Lin should get ready.”
