Chapter 66: New Task
In Qin Lang’s office, several police officers, representatives from the prosecutor’s office, Captain Zhou, and a few military leaders were discussing some confidential matters.
Finally, a military leader looked at the contemplative Qin Lang and spoke again “Comrade Qin Lang, do you need more time to think?”
Qin Lang stood up, saluted, and said firmly, “I will complete the task without fail.”
After everyone left, only Qin Lang and Captain Zhou remained.
Captain Zhou spoke first, “Qin Lang, think carefully, this is not something that can be completed in a few months. It might take several years and will be full of dangers and challenges.”
Seeing that Qin Lang remained silent and deep in thought, Captain Zhou spoke again, “Qin Lang, let me go instead, they haven’t left yet.”
Qin Lang shook his head, saying, “There are many things in the team that depend on you. Plus, you’re not suitable because of your age. Shan Ye is quite mature leading the team on missions now, and it would be best for me to go.”
Captain Zhou knew Qin Lang’s reasoning was correct, but he felt it was unfair to Dr. Lin. So he said, “But what about Dr. Lin…”
Qin Lang lowered his eyes, concealing the pain within, stood up, took out a cigarette, and began to smoke in silence, lost in thought.
Captain Zhou approached and patted his shoulder, lighting a cigarette himself, and spoke again “This is the peculiarity of our profession, in our line of work, you can do right by the country, but not by your family, and vice versa.”
“Since ancient times, how many soldiers have sacrificed their lives for their country, unable to fulfill filial duties to their parents or care for their wives and children? No one can have it both ways.”
Qin Lang turned, extinguished his cigarette, and told Captain Zhou about Lin You’s recent plans “Originally, she planned to transfer to the Third Hospital in the local city after the autumn adjustments, but it seems that will not be possible now.”
Captain Zhou nodded in understanding.
Then Qin Lang made his request: “Captain, no matter what happens in the future, after I leave, please contact my parents immediately and have them come to accompany her for a while.”
“Should we send Dr. Lin back to City C?” Captain Zhou asked.
“She won’t want to go back, have my mother come here to stay with her for a few days.”
Captain Zhou gave a solemn promise “Don’t worry, I will notify them promptly.”
He then raised a question “Who do you plan to take with you? Yang Li? He’s recovering well now.”
Qin Lang shook his head and said, “I will take Yang Pan.”
“Why?”
Qin Lang sighed, sat back down, and explained, “Lu Li is Lin You’s cousin, let him stay behind to take care of her.”
Qin Lang understood that taking Lu Li would be the best choice since he was the sharpest mind in the stationed team. However, if both of them were in trouble, how would she handle it?
Leaving Lu Li behind, at least until his parents arrived, he could accompany her and provide support, preventing her from completely breaking down.
If there was still a choice, how could he bear to let her face everything alone? But there was truly no other way, he could only ensure his own safety and wait for them to reunite.
Captain Zhou instructed Qin Lang: “Take the next couple of days to rest and spend time with Dr. Lin.”
“Okay.”
“In the afternoon, I’ll call Yang Pan over, we’ll discuss further plans on Monday.”
“Got it.”
When Qin Lang returned home, Lin You had not yet arrived, so he went into the kitchen to prepare a dinner that she liked.
When Lin You returned home, she saw Qin Lang busy in the kitchen, dropped her keys, and curiously asked, “Why are you home so early today?”
“There wasn’t much going on at the team, so I came back early.”
“Then tomorrow is the weekend, are you going to take a break?”
Qin Lang nodded, indicating yes.
He served the dishes on the table and asked Lin You in return, “Why did you come back so late today?”
“There was a leg injury case that came in just before my shift ended, which delayed things a bit.”
She then shared the news she heard from Nurse Deng “The nurse said that due to some temporary situations at the team, her wedding with Shan Ye has been postponed.”
Then she looked at Qin Lang, puzzled, and asked, “Is there some urgent situation at the station?”
Qin Lang wiped his hands and wrapped an arm around Lin You’s shoulders as they walked to the dining table, calmly responding, “There isn’t anything urgent, just that things have been a bit busy lately.”
Lin You sat down, looking worriedly at Qin Lang “Does that mean you’ll be busy again?”
After serving her a bowl of soup, Qin Lang explained, “The team is preparing to select a new batch of recruits, and Shan Ye is likely getting ready for drills during the 11th holiday, which is why Nurse Deng’s wedding has been postponed.”
Lin You still found it strange “Wasn’t it usually you who went for that? Why are you staying at the station this year?”
Qin Lang hadn’t expected her to ask that, so he nodded, admitting she was right.
Lin You’s lips turned up, clearly pleased, last year, Qin Lang had been away for over three months, but that wouldn’t happen this year.
Qin Lang noticed her good mood and didn’t want to spoil it, so he simply focused on his meal.
Lin You, however, sensed something was off with Qin Lang. Normally, if she was happy, he would be too, but today he was unusually quiet and had come home early, which felt abnormal.
Could it be that he had made some mistake recently? But that shouldn’t be the case, he had just been promoted, and he was very disciplined and responsible, so he shouldn’t be messing up.
As Qin Lang looked up, he caught Lin You deep in thought.
He served her another piece of meat, encouraging her to eat, but seeing her still worried, he reassured her, “Don’t worry, everything’s fine. I’m busy with other things, so I sent Shan Ye instead.”
Hearing this, Lin You relaxed and served Qin Lang a shrimp.
Looking at her bright smile, Qin Lang asked, “Tomorrow is the weekend, do you have to work?”
Lin You shook her head and replied, “No, I’m off!”
Qin Lang immediately suggested, “Then let’s go out and explore a bit tomorrow.”
Lin You shook her head again and asked, “Why do we have to go out? Isn’t it nice to stay at home? I just went out last week.”
Qin Lang smiled and explained, “Staying at home is nice, but since you’ve been here, we haven’t explored the surroundings. I know a really nice summer resort nearby.”
“Weren’t you always saying you wanted us to go out and have some fun together? Tomorrow we have time, and on Monday we’ll be busy again.”
Lin You felt that something was not quite right about Qin Lang today, but she couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was.
She noticed he seemed to have many thoughts on his mind, yet he looked forward to their outing, making it hard for her to refuse, so she nodded in agreement.
Qin Lang instantly brightened up.
Seeing his happiness, Lin You smiled and added, “But let’s not go too far or to hot places. I don’t want to walk too much.”
“Okay, I promise it will be cool and comfortable.”
“I don’t want to walk, I’ll carry you.”
