Chapter 74: The Arrival of Qin’s Parents
Lu Li didn’t know where to take Lin You; he just drove aimlessly.
Lin You, after getting in the car, didn’t say a word, curling up in the passenger seat, gazing at the darkness outside. Occasionally, when Lu Li spoke, she didn’t respond, leaving no one to know what was on her mind.
Lu Li wanted to tell her the truth several times, but every time he opened his mouth, the words stuck in his throat.
As Lin You watched the car speed by, her mind was in turmoil. From Lu Li’s words and Qin Lang’s previous remarks, she had pieced together some of the situation.
If Qin Lang was still alive, where was he now? When would he return?
She understood his profession and his mission, many things were beyond his control. Whatever he did, it was based on his military duties, but why did it have to be this way?
She couldn’t help but feel wronged. Couldn’t he be a little selfish, just a little?
Without a country, how could there be a home? Her father chose the country first, and so did Qin Lang. The country and family have always been prioritized like this throughout history.
Her mother chose love, what about her? How should she choose?
As these thoughts swirled in her mind, Lin You felt a wave of suffocation, as if something was blocking her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Seeing this, Lu Li hurriedly pulled over, quickly getting out to help Lin You out of the car.
Lin You let out a retching sound. After throwing up, she felt a bit lighter.
As the sky gradually brightened, Lin You wiped her mouth and said hoarsely, “Let’s go back.”
Hearing this, Lu Li quickly helped her back into the car.
After getting out, Lin You’s steps were unsteady. With her head down, she slowly walked toward the family building, and Lu Li didn’t dare to ask too much, quietly following her.
Back at home, Lu Li gently closed the door and walked to the living room, quietly watching Lin You sit on the sofa. He didn’t know how to comfort her, so he just sat silently with her.
After a while, he softly asked, “Sister, what do you want to eat? I can make something for you.”
Lin You looked up, her eyes vacant and tired. She shook her head and said in a low voice, “Lu Li, I can’t eat. You go ahead.”
Lu Li sighed and looked at her pale face, his heart aching. “You can’t do that! If you don’t eat, you’ll wear yourself down. How about some porridge? It’s easy to digest.”
Lin You remained silent for a moment, then gently nodded.
Lu Li immediately turned and went into the kitchen, busying himself. Soon, the aroma of porridge wafted through the kitchen. He brought a steaming bowl of porridge to Lin You. “Sister, please eat something.”
Lin You took the bowl, stirring it with the spoon but couldn’t bring herself to eat.
After forcing down a few spoonfuls, she set the bowl down and said, “I’m tired; I want to sleep. Please ask for leave for me from the health team.” She then stood up and walked straight toward the bedroom.
Lu Li watched her retreating figure disappear behind the door and sighed. He quietly cleaned up the bowls and chopsticks, preparing to request a leave of absence for Lin You.
Lin You lay silently on the familiar bed, her eyes tightly shut, but her mind was filled with everything related to Qin Lang.
All the words he had said, all the things he had done, whether good or bad, played in her mind like a continuous film, flashing through her thoughts.
She felt so tired, as if her entire being had been hollowed out. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t fall asleep. She wanted to stop thinking about Qin Lang, to comfort herself that he would definitely return, that he was just on a mission as usual.
But that overwhelming sense of unease and the harshness of reality felt uncontrollable, like a runaway horse.
Meanwhile, Lu Li arrived at the health team.
Xiao Nan, Xiao Bei, Dr. Liu, the head nurse, and Captain Song all rushed over, concerned. “How’s Dr. Lin? Is she alright?”
Lu Li shook his head helplessly. “She can’t eat or sleep.”
Xiao Nan anxiously said, “That’s not good! If this goes on, her health will deteriorate, she’s already so frail.”
They all suggested visiting her to comfort her.
Captain Song sighed and said helplessly, “In this situation, any persuasion is inappropriate. No one can truly convince her; she’ll have to figure it out on her own.”
Turning to Lu Li, he added, “Let her take a few more days off. It’s okay, everyone will understand.”
Back at home, Lin You lay on the bed, her physical exhaustion combined with mental worries causing her to shed tears.
Suddenly, there was a rapid knocking at the door.
Lin You got out of bed and went to the door.
When she opened it, she saw Qin’s parents standing at the door, looking worried and rushed, their eyes red and swollen. Especially Qin’s mother, who had clearly just finished crying.
But Qin’s mother still bravely comforted her, “Yoyo, don’t be afraid, Mom is here.”
These few words made all of Lin You’s grievances, worries, and fears pour out at once. The tears she had been holding back finally broke free at the sight of Qin’s mother.
She hugged Qin’s mother and cried loudly.
Hearing Lin You’s cries, Qin’s mother couldn’t hold back her tears either but still maintained a steady voice, saying, “Yoyo, don’t cry, don’t cry, Mom is here.”
“It’s okay, everything will be fine with Dad and Mom here.”
Qin’s father signaled Qin’s mother to come inside and then closed the door.
Seeing the two of them, Qin’s father’s eyes also became wet. This general, who had witnessed life and death, now shed tears of sorrow.
When Lu Li returned, he heard the sound of crying.
Hurrying into the room, he saw the mother and daughter embracing each other in tears.
Qin’s father looked at Lu Li, wiped the tears from his eyes, and gestured for him to come and sit.
Both strong men felt their hearts wrenching at the sound of the heartbreaking cries.
With Qin’s mother’s comfort, Lin You gradually stopped crying but still had hiccups. Qin’s mother wiped her own tears, gently patting Lin You’s back, just like she did when Lin You was a child.
Then she took out some tissues to wipe Lin You’s tears, softly comforting her “Yoyo, let’s go home, Mom will take care of you.”
Lin You shook her head, tears in her eyes, sobbing, “No, I want to wait for Qin Lang to come back.”
“He’ll be back soon.”
Seeing her stubbornness, Qin’s mother worried she might lose control of her emotions again and said, “Okay, don’t cry, Mom will stay here with you until Qin Lang comes back.”
“Mm, Mom, I miss Qin Lang so much.”
“Mom knows, I know. My Yoyo has suffered.”
Hearing from Lu Li that she hadn’t eaten for two days, Qin’s father furrowed his brow and sighed softly. He went into the kitchen to make Lin You’s favorite snow fungus lotus seed soup.
Qin’s mother sat beside Lin You, gently stroking her hand, softly saying, “Yoyo, eat something, okay? No matter what happens, you must take care of yourself.”
Lin You nodded slightly, showing her agreement.
She picked up the bowl and took a few sips. Seeing that she was willing to eat, the three of them sighed in relief.
However, not long after, she suddenly felt nauseous and hurriedly covered her mouth, rushing to the bathroom to vomit everything she had just eaten.
Qin’s mother handed her a glass of water to rinse her mouth.
After rinsing, Lin You’s face was as pale as paper, her body swaying as if she would fall at any moment.
She tried to stand up, but her vision suddenly blurred, the world began to spin, and her legs lost strength, causing her to fall backward. Luckily, Qin’s mother had been standing behind her and quickly caught her.
“Yoyo… what’s wrong? Wake up… wake up…”
“Don’t scare Mom…” Qin’s mother tightly held Lin You, tears streaming down her face.
She had already lost her son, if anything happened to Yoyo, how could she continue living?
Lu Li and Qin’s father were both startled by the sudden situation. Lu Li quickly picked Lin You up and rushed downstairs, while Qin’s father hurried to get the car to take her to the health team.
