A Little Annoyance
Seeing Zhang Xiaofeng’s reaction, Han Yan thought she was angry and seized the opportunity to stir trouble. “Auntie, you don’t know this, but Lin Nannan just pushed Brother Heng earlier and almost suffocated him. Now she’s carrying him like this—she’s so reckless! Who knows if she’s hurt Brother Heng or not.”
Lin Nannan slightly lowered her gaze and looked at Lu Heng, asking, “Are you uncomfortable anywhere?”
Lu Heng shook his head. Just as he was about to ask her to put him down, he saw his mother suddenly clap her hands and pull Lu Yuan aside, saying, “Quick, change your brother’s bedding…”
Lu Yuan, recalling how even three people in the family usually struggled to handle her tall elder brother, immediately understood why her mother was so excited.
The mother and daughter completely ignored Han Yan and swiftly changed the bedding on the bed with clean ones.
“Nannan, put Aheng down. Be careful not to tire yourself out,” Zhang Xiaofeng said with concern, initially worried that Lin Nannan might not be able to hold him. Seeing that Lin Nannan hadn’t said a word even after the bedding was changed, she quickly expressed her care.
Lin Nannan gave a slight smile and placed Lu Heng back on the bed. Her expression was somewhat peculiar, as if she was thinking something strange…
At least, Lu Heng felt her gaze was a bit odd. If he hadn’t hesitated to ask, Lin Nannan would have candidly replied, “Even though you can’t move, you’ve got quite a nice build.”
“Sister-in-law, you’re amazing!” Lu Yuan, holding the dirty bedding in her arms, said with admiration, “My brother’s weight is such that even my dad and two others might not be able to carry him for long. Yet you alone can lift him so easily. How strong are you?”
Although Lu Heng didn’t speak, he was also curious.
He rarely stayed in the village, but he had occasionally heard the villagers mention that the Lin family had an adopted daughter whose brain had been damaged by a fever. She was bold and reckless, causing the Lin family a lot of trouble, yet no one sympathized with them.
After all, even someone like him, who rarely returned home, had heard about the Lin family’s mistreatment of their adopted daughter.
Lin Nannan didn’t think much of it. In her time, having great strength was the most basic requirement, so lifting Lu Heng was nothing to her.
However, faced with so many curious eyes, she needed to provide an explanation. She casually said, “I don’t know. I’ve been foraging for food in the mountains since I was a child. I guess I built up my strength back then.”
Upon hearing this, Zhang Xiaofeng’s eyes welled up with tears. She grabbed Lin Nannan’s hand and said, “Now that you’re here, no one can bully you anymore.”
Lin Nannan could sense Zhang Xiaofeng’s genuine care for her. She couldn’t help but turn to the resentful Han Yan and say, “But she thinks I can’t take care of Lu Heng properly!”
The entire Lu family turned their gaze toward Han Yan, catching her off guard. Her resentful expression was still visible before she could hide it.
She struggled to control her emotions and forced a smile, saying, “Nannan, you’ve misunderstood. That’s not what I meant…”
“You call my husband ‘Brother Heng,’ but you call me ‘Nannan.’ Do you not acknowledge me?” Lin Nannan asked bluntly.
All this beating around the bush seemed like child’s play to her, but she had no intention of being bullied, especially by a woman who clearly had ill intentions.
Han Yan, of course, didn’t acknowledge her. She didn’t want Lu Heng to have a good life, which was why she had been trying to turn the Lu family against Lin Nannan. She hadn’t expected the Lu family to treat Lin Nannan, the so-called fool, so well.
“I didn’t mean that. I was just worried you might not be used to it!” she explained stiffly.
Lin Nannan snorted coldly and said, “Lu Heng and I are husband and wife, with a marriage certificate. If you won’t call me ‘sister-in-law,’ then don’t call him ‘brother’ either.”
She was deliberately annoying Han Yan. Even if she didn’t care much for it, she wasn’t going to let someone like Han Yan get in her way.
