“Ms. Ji doesn’t seem quite right.”
A guest nearby whispered.
It seemed that Jiang Cha wasn’t the only one who noticed her tears.
“It’s normal,” another person explained, “When my daughter got married, my parents cried a lot too.”
“But Ms. Ji isn’t giving her daughter away. Why is she crying?”
“Maybe she got something in her eye.” Another person chuckled, “Who said she was crying? She was just rubbing her eye.”
Indeed, it was just a moment, and Ji Fan’s expression returned to normal.
It was just that she still had no expression. Her long eyelashes drooped, revealing only her beautiful long eyebrows and the elegant curve of her white nose. She lowered her head slightly, the script covering her thin and elegant red lips, and her expression was unclear.
Jiang Cha’s gaze searched for Luo Yan.
When Ji Fan was speaking, Luo Yan had been staring intently at her. When the microphone was handed back to the wedding host and Ji Fan was about to leave, Jiang Cha saw them exchange a glance across the crowd.
A deep glance.
It was subtle, as if there was some kind of chemical reaction, crackling.
Her white fingers curled up slightly.
Jiang Cha frowned slightly.
Was she overthinking it? Ji Fan and Luo Yan, they… it was impossible, right? Luo Yan was her brother’s wife, and after the wedding, she would be her sister-in-law.
Jiang Cha didn’t know if she was influenced by too many messy TV dramas, but for a moment she thought of many things. For example, why was she so similar in appearance to Luo Yan? Could it be that the Ji family’s aesthetic preferences were hereditary, and the brother and sister liked the same type of appearance?
Then she saw Ji Fan turn and walk off the stage.
Luo Yan had also looked away and was smiling and talking to the people beside her, as if the moment they had looked at each other was just Jiang Cha’s illusion.
An illusion?
It must be an illusion.
Otherwise, it would be too absurd.
The sea breeze felt a little sticky, blowing on her face with a hint of saltiness, making her feel uncomfortable.
Fortunately, the wedding ended soon. Guests who were less closely related could leave, while those who remained were mostly relatives or very close friends. Ji Fan had to stay, so Jiang Cha and the other unrelated people dispersed.
Jiang Cha couldn’t help but think.
She looked so similar to Luo Yan, how could that be a coincidence? Could it be that the Ji siblings had the same taste? Could it be, could it be…
But Luo Yan was Ji Fan’s sister-in-law?
Jiang Cha closed her eyes and drove the absurd thoughts out of her mind.
••••
That night, Ji Fan still hadn’t contacted her.
After all, it was her brother’s wedding, and as a sister, she still had a lot of procedures to go through. She was probably still busy by the beach.
Jiang Cha really wanted to call her.
She had so many questions, and she couldn’t figure them out.
Jiang Cha curled up under the light brown thin quilt. The night chill crept in silently, and the chirping of insects and birds could be heard incessantly in her ears.
She didn’t sleep well.
She had a dream. In the dream, there was a woman who gently hugged her and looked at her with a gentle smile, then leaned closer and whispered in her ear, “This is called being kept.”
Jiang Cha woke up with a start.
It was raining heavily outside, with thunder and lightning, and the sound of rain washing over the ground was incessant.
Perhaps it was the thunder that woke her up.
Then she heard her phone ringing.
Jiang Cha opened her eyes and looked at the name that lit up on the screen.
After it rang several times, Jiang Cha dazedly answered.
“Hello.” The voice on the other end was very soft, with a hint of drunkenness, “Come pick me up.”
Jiang Cha rubbed her eyes, checked the time, and it was one in the morning.
She got up and, following the location sent to her, found the place.
It was a bar downstairs from the company building.
Ji Fan was slightly drunk. After all, it was already the early morning, and the bar was sparsely populated. She leaned against the bar, drinking a few glasses of wine, her long curly hair spread out, and her black sheath dress was still on, her back figure looking desolate, thin, and lonely.
How did she end up drinking here?
Ji Fan looked up and was startled when she saw Jiang Cha, then she looked at her with a wry smile and hugged her, kissing her earlobe.
“Jiang Cha…” she called her name softly.
Jiang Cha responded softly.
Jiang Cha half-carried her out.
It was raining heavily outside, her shoes were completely wet, and her pants were also wet. With every gust of wind, she shivered.
But the umbrella still sheltered Ji Fan well.
She was stuffed into the passenger seat, and they drove home.
Jiang Cha’s fingers were a little cold, and slightly sticky wet sweat seeped out.
Ji Fan seemed to have been sobered up a bit by the rain and the night chill. After getting into the car, her eyes were no longer so floating, and she just leaned against the car window quietly, not knowing what she was thinking.
Jiang Cha stepped on the gas and reversed.
“Do you know Luo Yan?” Jiang Cha asked casually.
“…”
Ji Fan looked up and turned her head to look at Jiang Cha.
“I know her,” Ji Fan said quietly, “I’ve known her for ten years. What’s wrong?”
Jiang Cha’s heart tightened.
She turned her head to look out the window. The rain was falling so heavily it was unimaginable, and it was splashing against the car window, sliding down in streams, blurring and distorting the city’s scenery.
“Ten years…”
Jiang Cha murmured, suddenly feeling that the word was too familiar.
—”You probably don’t know, this ring was discontinued ten years ago.”
That’s right, it was this sentence.
Luo Yan had said this strange sentence so suddenly, right next to her ear.
Jiang Cha’s heart pounded wildly. The car was unusually quiet, with no midnight radio, no light music, no noisy hosts and advertisements on the radio.
She could hear her own breathing, one breath more anxious than the next.
“By the way,” Jiang Cha lowered her head and smiled, “Many people said the ring is very beautiful, where did you buy it?”
“…”
Ji Fan turned her head to look at Jiang Cha again.
She seemed particularly strange today.
“I didn’t buy it,” Ji Fan lowered her head and said softly, “The ring isn’t even mine.”
Jiang Cha wanted to ask more, but looking at her enigmatic expression, she couldn’t.
Ji Fan leaned against the passenger seat, her long hair spread out, and her slightly lonely and melancholy expression seemed to be thinking about someone.
Jiang Cha frowned.
Why doesn’t Ji Fan want to explain the origin of the ring?
Why does Luo Yan remember this ring so clearly?
Could she have worn it?
Jiang Cha felt her heart plummet, heavy and sudden. Certain clues from the past were unraveling one by one.
An answer slowly emerged.
But she didn’t believe it.
How could this be possible?!
They had been together for six years! Six whole years!
How could Ji Fan…
The rain was getting heavier and heavier, as if a hole had been torn in the sky, and the endless rain poured down. The windshield wipers swept across, but the rain blurred the view.
The headlights illuminated the hazy road ahead, but the illuminated distance was very limited. In the darkness, the streetlights were dim, and the light was distorted.
“Senior Ji,” Jiang Cha asked slowly, “I want to ask you something. Just one.”
Ji Fan finally noticed something was wrong with Jiang Cha.
Senior Ji?
She never called her that before.
Ji Fan turned her head abruptly, her black and white eyes fixed on her, and a subtle emotion flashed past.
Jiang Cha took a deep breath.
She wanted to ask, “Have you ever lied to me about anything?”
She wanted to ask, “What is your relationship with Luo Yan?”
She also wanted to ask, “Did you notice me because I looked like Luo Yan?”
But she couldn’t ask.
She couldn’t say a word.
Her fingers trembled wildly, almost unable to grip the steering wheel.
Taking a few deep breaths, Jiang Cha simply turned her head, smiled slightly, and asked softly, “If you were to get married one day, who would you want to marry?”
“…”
Ji Fan frowned, her expression impatient, as if she didn’t want to answer.
Jiang Cha chuckled bitterly.
“You today…” Ji Fan seemed to want to say something, but at that moment, two blinding white lights suddenly shone, and Jiang Cha suddenly, desperately, broke free from the driver’s seat and threw herself onto Ji Fan.
Bang!
With a loud bang, the entire car body slammed into a large truck, half of the car body was crushed and deformed, and was thrown to one side. The car windows shattered and shattered, flying everywhere.
Jiang Cha let out a piercing scream. Her right hand, because she was holding Ji Fan, directly hit the tail of the truck, and blood gushed out. The broken glass pierced the blood vessels, and blood mixed with rain water poured down her shoulder, staining Ji Fan’s body with warm blood.
Ji Fan’s whole body froze.
A long-suppressed memory came to her unexpectedly.
Ji Fan held Jiang Cha, her whole body ice-cold, trembling constantly.
Jiang Cha didn’t know, but Ji Fan’s mother had used the same posture to desperately protect her.
In the end, the rescue was too late, and she died of excessive blood loss.
She was only in her early thirties when she died.
