The robber got up from the ground, glaring fiercely at Wen Ci: “Did you do that on purpose? Do you have a death wish or something?”
Wen Ci shook her head innocently: “I didn’t.”
The man noticed the gold bracelet on Wen Ci’s wrist and pointed the knife at her, threatening: “Give me your gold bracelet, or I’ll chop off your hand.”
Wen Ci narrowed her eyes slightly, her gaze fixed on his hand. The robber was only relying on the weapon in his hand to cause trouble; without it, he was useless.
“Not going to hand it over?” the man pressed closer.
Just as Wen Ci was about to kick him, a man in police uniform appeared behind the robber, and a military pickup truck was parked not far away.
The police officer moved swiftly and forcefully, kicking the robber’s arm, causing the dagger to fall to the ground. In a few quick moves, he subdued the robber and pinned him to the ground.
The police officer looked up: “Are you okay?”
Wen Ci shook her head: “I’m fine.”
…
Jiang Ye had been awake all night, thinking about how to convince her parents to let her go to the northwest. Hearing noises from the living room, she stepped out of her room.
Her mother was in the kitchen making breakfast.
Su Guilan turned around and smiled: “You’re up?”
Jiang Ye shook her head: “I didn’t sleep.”
Hearing this, Su Guilan put down the spatula in her hand and walked over to her daughter, noticing the dark circles under her eyes. She asked with concern: “What happened? Why didn’t you sleep all night?”
“Mom, I want to go to the northwest.”
“The northwest?” Su Guilan frowned in confusion. Why would her daughter suddenly want to go to the northwest? She reached out to touch Jiang Ye’s forehead, muttering to herself: “No fever, so why are you talking nonsense?”
“Mom, I don’t want to take the college entrance exam anymore. I want to go to the northwest.”
Jiang Chen, dressed in his military uniform, was about to leave when he heard the commotion in the kitchen downstairs. He leaned against the doorframe and said indifferently: “Xiao Ye has changed her mind and wants to marry Huo Jingyuan again.”
“What about Gu Zhe?”
Gu Zhe was Jiang Ye’s boyfriend, who had the potential to get into Tsinghua or Peking University.
“I want to break up with him.”
In this era, most young people’s marriages were still arranged by their parents. The Jiang family was relatively liberal, allowing Jiang Ye the freedom to choose her own partner.
“Huo Jingyuan has already married Jiang Ci. Going to the northwest won’t change anything.”
Yesterday, at the state-run restaurant, they heard others mention Huo Jingyuan and learned that he had become the youngest military officer in the northwest through his own efforts.
In a few years, he might even get promoted.
Jiang Ye refused to listen and even knelt on the ground, tears welling up in her eyes as she pleaded: “Even if I don’t marry Huo Jingyuan, I still want to go to the northwest military region. I can’t keep studying anymore!”
She was telling the truth!
She had already forgotten everything she had learned for the college entrance exam.
With only a month left before the exam, even if she stayed in Beijing, she wouldn’t be able to get into university. She might as well take a chance in the northwest military region. Who knows? Maybe she could break them apart.
“Nonsense.”
Su Guilan was furious.
She had always been gentle-tempered, having only lost her temper twice in her life. Once was when she found out Jiang Ye wasn’t her biological daughter.
The second time was now.
“You say you don’t want to go to university, so you won’t go? Back then, when we wanted you to marry Huo Jingyuan, you refused. Now that he’s married, you’re willing to marry him.”
“Mom…”
Jiang Ye wanted to say more.
Su Guilan cut her off sharply: “Going to the northwest is out of the question. I won’t allow it unless you cut ties with this family from now on!”
Jiang Ye lowered her head, a hint of ruthlessness flashing in her eyes.
As expected, if you’re not their biological child, they won’t truly care about you!
