Before leaving work, Yang Xiaoye picked up the hoe and pretended to work in the fields, waiting for the person who recorded the work points to come.
Liu Dong was quite surprised when he arrived. He hadn’t expected Yang Xiaoye to finish the task.
He looked at the delicate Yang Xiaoye. Even though her clothes were covered with dust, she was still incredibly beautiful.
He just waved his hand and gave her full work points.
“Comrade Yang, you’ve done a great job. You’re worthy of being from the city.”
Yang Xiaoye curled her lips.
No sound.
After recording the work points, the workers went home one after another.
Yang Xiaoye walked to the big tree but didn’t move further.
While pretending, she noticed that not only her hands had blisters, but also her feet.
It hurt so much to walk that she had no choice but to sit under the shade of the tree.
The blisters on her feet weren’t as bad as those on her hands, but they were still painful for Yang Xiaoye.
After a long day’s work and the injuries she had sustained, Yang Xiaoye couldn’t hold back her tears anymore.
When Gu Huai arrived, he saw this scene.
The little girl wasn’t wearing shoes and her two white feet were exposed.
She was staring at her palms and crying.
Gu Huai, who had originally planned to take action to hold someone accountable, suddenly didn’t know what to do.
Just earlier, Gu Jiao came home and mysteriously took out a white steamed bun with meat inside.
Gu Huai was startled at once.
He later heard it had been given by the villagers, which made him even more anxious.
The villagers avoided them like the plague, so how could they give them such precious things?
White steamed buns were something the wealthy families in the village ate during Chinese New Year.
Not to mention the sausages he had never seen before.
Gu Jiao said she didn’t understand what happened. She only mentioned things like “the land is in the ground, I’ll give it back to you next time” and “it’s delicious.”
This led Gu Huai to misunderstand, thinking it had been given by a little hooligan in the village who had feelings for Gu Jiao.
Gu Jiao was good-looking and one of the best in the village.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t very smart and had no status, which is why she never got married.
Gu Huai had always been protective of his sister, Gu Jiao, worried that she might be bullied due to her mental disability.
In addition to her struggles, Gu Jiao was physically strong and there were a few local troublemakers who had tried to pick on her but had failed.
Now, Gu Huai wondered if the village hooligans had resorted to tempting her with food instead of their usual tactics.
He began to suspect that might be the case and, driven by the thought of his sister being taken advantage of, rushed out to the fields.
However when he arrived, he found no one there except for a small girl crying in a babyish voice.
Frustrated, he cursed himself for being foolish, realizing he hadn’t considered the possibility that a troublemaker could afford to give away such luxuries like white steamed buns and sausages.
He concluded that the new city girl, unaware of the harshness of life in the village, must have been giving away the food without understanding the consequences.
The little girl continued to cry louder, showing no signs of stopping. Gu Huai, holding the steamed bun, suddenly felt it was like a hot potato. He didn’t know whether to move forward or leave.
“Ahem.”
A cough came from the bushes.
Yang Xiaoye was startled and asked instinctively, “Who is it?”
Gu Huai slowly emerged from the bushes, looking somewhat uncomfortable.
He couldn’t take the white steamed bun back now. While a steamed bun might not mean much to the little girl, it was extremely valuable to his family. He couldn’t just take it for free.
“It’s you!”
Yang Xiaoye was surprised and quickly wiped her tears from her face.
Her words meant she didn’t recognize the man as the driver, but instead recognized the handsome figure in the field.
Gu Huai, unaware of this, assumed Yang Xiaoye had recognized him as the guy from before and he became uncertain about what to say.
“Did you see me crying?”
Yang Xiaoye pursed her lips and asked a question she thought was important.
“Ah?”
Gu Huai didn’t expect this question and was stunned for a moment, not knowing how to respond.
“I’ve never done such heavy work before. It made me cry.”
Yang Xiaoye cried even harder when she realized that Gu Huai had seen her. Her tears fell quickly, making a soft crackling sound as they dropped.
Gu Huai didn’t know what to say.
“Look at my hands, they’re all blistered and hurt.”
Yang Xiaoye pointed to her hands, showing the large blisters that made her soft hands look even more painful.
“And my feet.”
Yang Xiaoye then showed her feet as well.
When Gu Huai saw this, his breathing tightened. He quickly turned away, not sure how to react.
He noticed that this city girl seemed to have some special skills, which always made his heart race.
“You need to pop the blisters before applying the medicine. It won’t work like this.”
Gu Huai forced himself to focus and not look at her. He just stared at his own hand, which made the blisters on her palms even more obvious.
“Ah, will it hurt? I don’t dare.”
Her soft and gentle tone almost made Gu Huai blurt out, “I’ll help you.”
But years of self-discipline kept him from saying it. He took two deep breaths and avoided looking into Yang Xiaoye’s moist, red eyes.
It was only then that he remembered the reason for his visit.
“For you.”
Yang Xiaoye was confused.
“Isn’t this what I gave to Ah Jiao?”
Ah Jiao?
In just one day, had they become so close?
Gu Huai felt warmth in his heart. He realized that while the city girl might seem spoiled, she didn’t discriminate against his sister. She wasn’t like some villagers who pretended to be kind but showed contempt for Gu Jiao.
“Gu Jiao, she’s my sister. We… can’t keep her.”
It turned out that Ah Jiao’s real name was Gu Jiao. So, this must be Ah Huai?
Gu Jiao, Ah Huai…
Yang Xiaoye seemed to be piecing things together in her mind.
Then it clicked.
“So, it’s you.”
Another sentence followed, “You” which made Gu Huai confused.
“I was wondering why your voice sounded so familiar. It was you who brought me to the village that day, right?”
Yang Xiaoye finally made the connection.
“Then I can’t take it. I still owe you a yuan.”
When money was mentioned, Gu Huai’s face became slightly awkward.
He didn’t say anything, nor did he take back the hand that was still extended.
“It’s okay. Ah Jiao helps me with the work and I feed her. We don’t owe each other anything.”
Yang Xiaoye pointed to the land next to them.
She added another sentence.
“Your sister is amazing.”
So that’s how it is, Gu Huai suddenly understood.
He had just heard Liu Dong say that the new city girl wasn’t spoiled and could finish all the work.
He was still wondering, but now he knew it was Ah Jiao who had helped her.
Now he didn’t know what to do with the things in his hands.
Gu Huai thought quietly.
“Gu Huai, can you please help me? It hurts so much.”
Yang Xiaoye was still looking at the blisters on her feet.
Her hands were less of a problem, but her feet needed attention first, or she wouldn’t be able to go home.
Gu Huai was still thinking and when he looked up, he saw a pair of pearl-white toes in front of him.
In an instant, he felt his blood rush to his head.
It didn’t matter whether it was something or not.
Gu Huai quickly fled in a very awkward way.
It felt like a vixen was behind him, trying to steal his soul[1]This phrase suggests a playful or seductive image, implying that Gu Huai feels overwhelmed or exaggerated..
Yang Xiaoye: …
Why does he always run away so quickly?
[A/N: Gu Huai: “The girls in the city not only know how to lie but also know witchcraft.”]
