Chapter 15 – Human Traffickers
There was a small convenience shop next to the station. It was well-stocked, though more expensive than other places.
“I’m going to buy some food. Want to come with me?” Wei Dong asked.
Lian Yuqing glanced at the crowded shop not far away. She didn’t particularly feel like eating anything, so she replied, “You go ahead.”
Wei Dong told her to stay and watch their bags.
When he came out holding a red plastic bag, it looked like Lian Yuqing was arguing with someone—a man and a woman were standing next to her.
“Are you f***ing insane? Can’t afford a mirror at home? Go piss and take a look at your reflection! Know your place. Looking like you do, you should just stay home and not come out scaring people!” Lian Yuqing snapped, facing away from Wei Dong.
Hearing this, Wei Dong frowned.
The woman raised her hand to slap her, but Lian Yuqing darted to Wei Dong’s side, acting brash and aggressive. “Come on then! Hit me if you dare!”
Wei Dong, tall and well-built with visible muscles even under his clothes, was clearly intimidating. The woman didn’t dare swing but still wasn’t willing to back down. “Don’t hide behind your man if you’ve got guts! I’ll beat you to death!”
The woman looked nasty, and the young man beside her gave Lian Yuqing a disgusting look, which made Wei Dong frown deeper. “What’s going on?”
Now that her backup had arrived, Lian Yuqing was completely unafraid. She stepped out from behind Wei Dong and pointed at the two. “This woman was insisting I marry her son—crazy, right? They were pulling at me, trying to drag me off. If I hadn’t been tough, they’d have taken me.”
Qi Xiaowei, arms crossed, suddenly felt a chill. When he unintentionally met Wei Dong’s gaze, it was like staring into a blizzard—sharp and deadly. Just one look made him feel like he’d been stabbed a dozen times.
Wei Dong had been tempered by real-life combat. Once his aura was unleashed, it was bloodthirsty and chilling—ordinary people couldn’t bear it.
Qi Xiaowei almost pissed himself. His mother, however, stepped in front of him, yelling, “What are you trying to do to my son?!”
Wei Dong retorted coldly, “I should be the one asking that. What were you trying to do to my wife?”
The two sides now stood off—man against woman.
The woman’s face sagged with loose skin, and her eyes were sharp and mean. She spat venomously, “Look at her—dressed like a damn vixen. So what if my son said a few words? Girls like her who flirt around and seduce men aren’t worth anything! She’s probably already cuckolded you.”
Suddenly, Qi Xiaowei screamed like a slaughtered pig. Wei Dong had grabbed his right arm. He didn’t look like he was using much force, but no matter how Qi struggled, he couldn’t break free.
“L-let go…” His arm might be broken.
There were a lot of people at the station, and the scream drew a crowd. The woman began shouting, trying to save her son. “Help! Someone’s killing my son! Help us!”
This was still an era full of kind-hearted bystanders. A few stepped closer, but before they could do anything, Lian Yuqing quickly said, “These two are human traffickers! They target women—just now, they almost dragged me away. My husband’s teaching them a lesson!”
Her pretty face gave credibility to her words. People paused, because the mother and son did look shady.
Actually, Wei Dong had already let go. Qi Xiaowei slumped on a bench, holding his shoulder like it really was broken.
Soon, uniformed staff from the station arrived. Lian Yuqing explained everything again, but this time the mother cut in, “Comrades, don’t believe her! We saw she was alone and thought she needed help, but now she’s turning the tables and accusing us! My son’s arm is broken! You must get justice for us!”
With both sides claiming innocence, the staff didn’t know whom to believe.
Lian Yuqing pointed and said, “Comrade, you can ask that lady in red over there, and that young man too. Oh, and the old man on the right—he saw it all.”
The staff immediately went to ask around. Once they confirmed the truth, they called for backup and had the mother and son arrested.
The two started panicking, yelling, “Why are you arresting us?! Arrest that vixen instead!”
Their voices grew distant until they could no longer be heard.
One of the station workers walked over and apologized, “Sorry, we almost misunderstood you.”
“It’s okay. As long as the bad guys are caught.” Lian Yuqing pointed at the direction the two were taken. “If human traffickers aren’t caught, it’s dangerous for women to travel.”
“You’re right. Thank you both—and thank you, Captain Wei.” He shook hands with Wei Dong.
Since Wei Dong was in military uniform and had shown his ID earlier, the staff were quite surprised—he was already a battalion commander at such a young age, and not an acting one either.
Once things settled, Lian Yuqing poked Wei Dong in the side and asked, “You don’t think I was too vicious, do you?”
Truthfully, the mother and son probably weren’t actual traffickers—but the creepy flirting and verbal abuse had thoroughly disgusted her.
“How do you know they weren’t traffickers?” Wei Dong asked.
“I don’t,” she admitted honestly.
He bent down to pick up the luggage. “Let’s go. The train’s leaving soon.”
Lian Yuqing, the daughter of a wealthy tycoon, had never taken a train in her life. She followed closely behind Wei Dong, mimicking his every move, afraid of embarrassing herself.
Wei Dong had bought two lower berths. Originally, he could only get two upper ones, but after remembering her disdainful expression, he contacted an old army buddy to swap for the lower berths.
Lian Yuqing quickly claimed one bed. Wei Dong silently shoved their luggage under it. Soon, the passengers for the upper bunks arrived—a young couple who quietly climbed up without saying much.
“I’m going to the bathroom.”
After Wei Dong finished making the bed and turned around, she was already gone.
The girl from the upper bunk peeked down and smiled. “Big brother, your wife is really pretty.”
Wei Dong was caught off guard and didn’t know what to say, so he just replied with a simple “Mm.”
Her boyfriend peeked down too. “Don’t mind her. She talks nonsense all the time.”
She shot back, “Are you blind? She’s the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen!”
“Even if she is, you don’t need to say it out loud!”
…
Wei Dong’s thoughts drifted. Lian Yuqing really was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen—even the famed beauties in the army’s art troupe didn’t compare.
“Comrade?”
Snapping out of it, he saw a middle-aged woman standing in the aisle with messy hair and a tired look. “Can I help you?”
She hesitated. “Could I ask you to switch bunks with me? My back is bad, and I can’t climb up.”
He looked at the clean lower berth across from them and was about to respond when—
“No.”
Lian Yuqing had returned. “Sorry, but we can’t switch.”
The woman pleaded, “You’re tall and have long legs. You can climb up easily. I really can’t.”
Afraid that Wei Dong might start being overly kind, Lian Yuqing cut him off before he could answer. “Oh dear, I’m pregnant. The baby’s a handful—he has to take care of me. You’ll have to ask someone else, it’s not convenient for us.” She even caressed her belly for effect.
Seeing that Wei Dong didn’t say a word and left everything to his woman to decide, the middle-aged woman gritted her teeth and stomped off.
