Maybe it was the sound of Meng Yue Sheng typing on the keyboard that made Wei Jin feel so comfortable. Without realizing it, she had fallen asleep. She lay curled up on the sofa, her head resting on a pillow, clutching another one in her arms. A few strands of her hair had fallen across her face, fluttering gently with each breath.
Meng Yue Sheng walked over carefully and covered her with a jacket. Then, he crouched down beside her, watching her for a long time.
He still couldn’t quite figure Wei Jin out, but spending time with her was truly enjoyable. Was someone like her worth entrusting his whole life to?
Or rather, was Wei Jin ready to have a home of her own?
Love always makes people lose their heads, and once you fall into it, you become blind to the world around you.
What would happen to them after they tasted the sweetness of love?
Meng Yue Sheng didn’t believe that a couple could remain in love and at peace forever. Even his father and Little Dad had small quarrels in their daily life. After a few days of silent treatment, they would always make up in the end.
Meng Yue Sheng thought to himself that if he and Wei Jin lived together in the future, he would accept everything about her.
But what about Wei Jin?
Would she accept him?
After years and years together, would she still care for him as she did now?
Especially when he grew old and unattractive, would Wei Jin still love him then?
Meng Yue Sheng felt that Wei Jin’s affection for him had a lot to do with his appearance. After all, who doesn’t like someone beautiful?
Well, let’s wait and see…
It’s best not to agree too quickly. At least, give her time to leave if she wants.
That’s what Meng Yue Sheng told himself.
…
Wei Jin woke up groggily, her shoulders and back aching a little. Someone was shaking her gently, trying to wake her up.
“Hmm?” Wei Jin murmured, her eyes still closed as she curled up, trying to move away. But the sofa was small, and there was nowhere for her to go.
“So tired…” Her voice came out soft and lazy, barely coherent. “Just a bit longer…”
“It’s already dark outside. Aren’t you hungry?” the person kept urging her.
That voice… so familiar… and pleasant…
Wait a minute… this isn’t home!
Wei Jin’s eyes snapped open, and she saw Meng Yue Sheng crouching next to her, his hand still on her shoulder.
Under the light, the reflection off his glasses made it hard to see the emotions in his eyes.
“Did I fall asleep?” Wei Jin quickly sat up and noticed the jacket draped over her. It was Meng Yue Sheng’s. “Uh… thanks…”
“Yeah, you didn’t sleep for long. But the sofa’s small, so you’d feel uncomfortable if you slept too long.”
Meng Yue Sheng took the jacket and slipped it on.
“It’s already nighttime. Are you hungry?” He smoothed out the wrinkles in his clothes.
Wei Jin touched her stomach. Flat.
“A little. Oh right, you didn’t reserve a restaurant, did you?”
“No, you told me not to.” After tidying his jacket, Meng Yue Sheng started organizing the papers scattered on the table.
“Good! I’ll take you to my usual spot. The food there is amazing!”
Wei Jin stood up and stretched, her joints cracking as she moved.
“I promised to keep you company, and I ended up falling asleep…” Wei Jin said, feeling guilty like a scolded puppy.
Meng Yue Sheng, still organizing his papers, smiled gently, “It’s fine.”
“So, should I take you out to eat?”
“Mm, let’s go.”
As Meng Yue Sheng turned to walk past her, Wei Jin grabbed his hand.
“Is this okay?” Wei Jin waved their joined hands. “I’ll let go when we get to the car.”
Meng Yue Sheng froze for a moment, then nodded.
While waiting for the elevator, Wei Jin snuck glances at Meng Yue Sheng’s face. His expression remained cool and unreadable, but since he didn’t refuse, she assumed he didn’t mind.
It really was evening now. The lobby was almost empty, and it was already dark outside.
The walk from the entrance to the underground parking lot felt so short…
Wei Jin opened the passenger door for Meng Yue Sheng. “After dinner, are you heading straight home?”
Once Meng Yue Sheng got in and she closed the door, she heard his response.
“Home.”
“Then… should I drive you home?” Wei Jin fiddled with the steering wheel, turning on the lights and starting the car. “Did you drive to work today?”
“Yeah…” Meng Yue Sheng’s hand quietly tightened around the seatbelt. “I drove.”
Wei Jin wasn’t sure why she felt so nervous, but her words came out slow and hesitant. “Then, I’ll take you home, and tomorrow I can drive you to work. How’s that?”
Afraid he might refuse, she quickly added, “I don’t have much going on right now, I’ve got time… If you think it’s a bother, then just, um…”
Meng Yue Sheng turned to look out the window. After a few seconds, he spoke softly, “It’s not a bother…”
“Great! I’ll pick you up then! Hehe…” Wei Jin grinned like a puppy who’d just been given a treat, full of joy.
Meng Yue Sheng glanced out the window at Wei Jin’s smiling face, and he couldn’t help but smile faintly himself.
Oh well, if he’s going to fall, he might as well fall hard.
…
The restaurant Wei Jin chose wasn’t in a central location. It had an old-school courtyard-style decor, but the food was so good that sometimes you needed a reservation to get a table.
Wei Jin was a regular here. The manager greeted her warmly and led them straight to a private room without asking who she’d brought along. He handed them the menu and politely stepped aside.
Having been there many times, Wei Jin immediately shared her recommendations with Meng Yue Sheng.
“Their beef rice bowl and chicken rice bowl are really good. Even the side dishes are tasty. Take a look, what do you feel like eating?”
Meng Yue Sheng scanned the colorful pictures on the menu and chose the signature chicken cutlet rice.
Wei Jin picked her usual beef rice bowl and added a few plates of refreshing side dishes.
“Oh, and two bowls of pear juice,” she said, putting down the menu.
Meng Yue Sheng looked puzzled, not seeing pear juice listed anywhere on the menu.
“That’s because it’s not on the menu,” Wei Jin explained with a smile. “The owner makes it as a special family recipe. He doesn’t serve it to everyone. But I’ve been coming here so often that he makes it for me when I ask.”
At first, the owner wasn’t too keen on it, but Wei Jin had charmed him with her persistence—and a bit of money. The owner joked that she reminded him of his own mischievous child. Gradually, he started making her a special batch every time she visited.
“You have to try it. It’s way better than any tea or juice from outside.”
Meng Yue Sheng nodded politely.
“Alright, please wait. We’ll bring your food shortly.” The manager left them alone, giving the two some space.
Wei Jin started to feel anxious when Meng Yue Sheng stayed quiet. “Are you uncomfortable here? Should we go somewhere else to eat?”
Sitting directly across from Wei Jin, Meng Yue Sheng could see her worried expression clearly. Seeing her be so considerate, he felt a little touched.
“I’ve eaten in places like this before. You don’t need to treat me like I’m too delicate,” he said, propping his arm on the table and resting his chin in his hand, looking more relaxed.
“That’s good… I was just worried I wasn’t doing a good enough job and making you uncomfortable…”
“If I ever make you uncomfortable or unhappy, please tell me!”
Wei Jin’s voice was serious, her gaze sincere and determined.
“Mm, I will.”
Meng Yue Sheng smiled, the corners of his eyes softening with warmth.
Just sitting there like that, he was so stunning that Wei Jin couldn’t look away.
Although they didn’t talk much after that, the atmosphere between them was nice.
Soon, dinner arrived, filling the room with mouth-watering aromas.
Even Meng Yue Sheng, who wasn’t usually that focused on food, found himself taking a few extra bites.
Wei Jin was sweating from the heat of the food and kept wiping her forehead with a napkin.
“Their food is really good, right? It tastes like home, and the portions are big too…” Wei Jin said as she wiped away the sweat, then enthusiastically urged him to try the pear juice. “It should’ve cooled down by now. Give it a try!”
Seeing how excited Wei Jin was for him to try the pear juice, Meng Yue Sheng set down his chopsticks, picked up a spoon, and took a sip.
The pear juice was sweet, with a rich pear flavor that filled his senses. It was warm and soothing as it slid down his throat, with pieces of pear that melted in his mouth.
Seeing Meng Yue Sheng’s eyes light up after the first sip, Wei Jin felt that all her efforts were worth it.
Meng Yue Sheng definitely liked the pear juice.
Seeing the eager look on Wei Jin’s face, Meng Yue Sheng immediately understood what she was thinking.
“It’s really good,” he said.
Her puppy-like excitement was so endearing that Meng Yue Sheng felt a warmth spreading in his heart. This might not have been the best meal he’d ever had, but it was certainly one of the most memorable.
After finishing the meal, they both felt quite full.
Wei Jin patted her belly, feeling satisfied but not wanting the evening to end so soon. She tried to find something to talk about.
“I’m feeling pretty full. Want to go for a walk and burn off some of this food?”
Meng Yue Sheng, still adjusting his shirt, replied softly, “Sure.”
After paying the bill, they strolled slowly through the streets, wandering aimlessly.
As they walked, their hands occasionally brushed against each other.
Wei Jin let out a long breath and asked in a low voice, “What do you think of me as a person?”
“You’re great, very kind… and you take good care of me…” Meng Yue Sheng’s voice was so gentle, it was almost like it could disappear into the wind.
“And… as a partner?”
“…”
Meng Yue Sheng didn’t answer right away. He looked off at the distant lights, then said softly, “It would probably be very happy, I think?”
Wei Jin glanced down at the space between their fingers, and in the next moment, when their hands brushed again, she took the opportunity to grab his hand.
“Then… let’s take things slow…”
Their joined hands were met with a quiet acceptance.
In the stillness of the night, the two of them shared an unspoken understanding.
Meng Yue Sheng’s apartment wasn’t far from his company. Once they got into the car, Wei Jin didn’t try to make conversation like she usually did. She simply drove in silence, only reminding him to rest well before quietly focusing on the road.
She thought to herself that she needed to give Meng Yue Sheng more time to process everything.
After all, relationships should be approached carefully, especially when marriage is the goal. It’s okay to take things slow. As long as it’s Meng Yue Sheng, it didn’t matter how long it took.
But Wei Jin… Wei Jin…
How could you know that this is also the time Meng Yue Sheng is giving you, in case you need to make a graceful exit?
The calmness of someone older is merely a facade.
He’s holding back—
Those unspeakable feelings.
