Chapter 45
Shi Chengyu had to go to Haishi for a meeting in the afternoon. Before leaving, he went to the Shen residence, but Shen Chutang’s door was locked, and she wouldn’t see anyone. As soon as she heard that Shi Chengyu was there, she locked the door from the inside.
He stood outside the door for half an hour, until he had to leave for the meeting. He repeatedly instructed the maid to take good care of her.
The next morning, Shen Sujing went to wake Shen Chutang up for breakfast. He knocked on the door and called out, “Tangtang, Tangtang, get up and eat something before you sleep.”
There was no response from inside. Shen Sujing turned the doorknob twice, but it wouldn’t open. Realizing something was wrong, he quickly asked someone to get a spare key.
Using the key to open the door, Shen Sujing rushed in. Shen Chutang was lying in bed, the covers not even pulled up. Her whole body was curled up, her cheeks flushed red.
“Tangtang!”
Shen Sujing rushed to the bedside, picked her up, and felt her forehead with his hand. It was incredibly hot. His heart skipped a beat. “Uncle Wen! Quickly call a doctor.”
“Tangtang, Tangtang?” Shen Sujing called her anxiously. He also asked the maid to get some alcohol to wipe her palms and limbs.
She was delirious and couldn’t speak. She just grabbed Shen Sujing’s clothes and cried.
Shen Sujing quickly called Shen Sichen. He had never taken care of a sick Shen Chutang before, so he had no experience. He could only comfort her first.
The doctor arrived before Shen Sichen, but Shen Chutang was stubborn when she was sick. She was too weak to speak, but she still made a fuss. She wouldn’t take medicine or let anyone give her an injection. She fussed for an hour before she drank a cup of warm water.
Shen Sichen felt both heartbroken and exasperated. He asked Wei Chuan to find a doctor to send a nebulizer over.
Early in the morning, there was a traffic jam during rush hour. Shen Sujing’s assistant, Zhou Yang, had already urged them several times in the group chat. Everyone was anxious.
Lin Shulang saw the message in the group chat and quickly asked: Who is sick? Miss Shen? Is it serious?
Shen Yanheng’s secretary also followed up with a question.
The meeting was half an hour away. On one hand, it was Shi’s annual high-level meeting, and on the other hand, it was Shen Chutang.
Lin Shulang only hesitated for a moment before knocking on Shi Chengyu’s door. “Mr. Shi, Miss Shen seems to have a fever.”
Shi Chengyu immediately put down his pen and took out his phone to call Shen Chutang. He couldn’t get through. He then took the phone from Lin Shulang and called Shen Sichen.
The call took a long time to connect. After a lot of fuss, Shen Chutang’s spirits also improved, and she had the strength to resist. She had already knocked over two cups of fever medicine.
When the call came in, Shen Sichen looked at the broken glass on the floor. His anger flared. “If it doesn’t work, have someone give her a sedative and then inject her! Do you want to wait until she burns out her brains?”
Shi Chengyu’s heart instantly clenched. “Second brother, how is Tangtang?”
“Chengyu?” Shen Sichen ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. “Don’t you have a meeting? Go ahead with your work. Everything is fine here.”
“Second brother, give the phone to Tangtang.”
Shen Sichen turned on the speakerphone and handed the phone over. Who knew that as soon as Shen Chutang heard Shi Chengyu’s voice, she immediately slapped the phone away. “No, no Shi Chengyu.”
A hoarse and weak voice came from the other end of the phone, followed by a few beeps.
Shi Chengyu stared at the phone in a daze for a moment, then said softly, “Go back.”
“Okay.” Lin Shulang didn’t hesitate to respond. The private jet’s flight path needed to be applied for four hours in advance, but Shi Chengyu obviously couldn’t wait four hours.
He bought the nearest flight. The car drove directly into the airport’s driveway and stopped by the plane’s gangway. The chief stewardess came down to greet him. Shi Chengyu’s steps were fast, leaving everyone behind.
The messages he had sent earlier seemed to have vanished into thin air. Shi Chengyu sat in his seat, his clasped hands trembling. The two-hour flight was too long for him. Every minute and every second was torture.
The plane landed. The driver he had arranged in advance was waiting downstairs. As soon as Shi Chengyu got in the car, it drove out of the airport.
Shen Sichen received another call from Shi Chengyu. He thought he had finished the meeting and called to ask how Shen Chutang was doing. Unexpectedly, as soon as he opened his mouth, he said he was coming back immediately and asked how Shen Chutang was doing.
Shen Sichen sighed. “No, she’s stubborn. She won’t listen to anyone. She won’t take medicine or get injections. She won’t even use the nebulizer.”
“Second brother, don’t force her. I’ll be there soon.”
Shen Sichen thought he meant soon, like at least three hours later. But less than twenty minutes later, Shi Chengyu’s car stopped at the door of the villa.
The car hadn’t even stopped before he pushed the door open and got out.
In Shen Chutang’s room, a group of doctors stood around the bed. She sat in the corner of the bed, hugging herself, curled up in a ball. Her cries were weak, and no one could do anything about her.
Shi Chengyu walked through the crowd, went to the bedside, and held her in his arms. Shen Chutang smelled the familiar scent and unconsciously rubbed against him. But the next moment, as if she remembered something, she started to struggle and cry even harder.
Shi Chengyu forcefully confined her in his arms, picked up the thermometer next to her, and took her temperature. “Tangtang, be good, it’s okay, it’s okay.”
He could almost feel the high temperature without even taking it. Shi Chengyu wiped the sweat from her forehead and tucked the hair on her face behind her ear. She cried in his arms, her shoulders twitching, her eyes bloodshot. He was heartbroken and speechless.
She had been tossing and turning all morning. She had only managed to drink a cup of warm water and a few sips of medicine. She hadn’t eaten much since yesterday.
She wouldn’t eat the medicine. Shen Sichen had someone send some food over. Tomato and egg rice, the only thing she could eat when she was sick.
Shi Chengyu took a spoon and brought it to her mouth. He coaxed her softly, “Tangtang, be good, take a bite, take a bite, you won’t feel bad anymore.”
Shen Chutang reacted for a long time before slowly opening her mouth and taking a small bite.
Shen Sichen and Shen Sujing were surprised to watch from the side. Shi Chengyu had only been there for less than half an hour, and he had calmed her down and fed her.
They had to admit that no one was better at taking care of Shen Chutang than Shi Chengyu.
“Good, you’re so good. Tangtang, take another bite, a small bite.” He had fed her half a bowl of rice, but Shen Chutang refused to eat anymore.
Shi Chengyu put down the spoon. He was about to take the water next to her to give her a drink, but the next second, Shen Chutang suddenly bent over and leaned over the edge of the bed. Everything she had just eaten came back up.
She hadn’t eaten much to begin with. She vomited for a while, but there was nothing left to vomit. She vomited up sour water.
Shi Chengyu quickly patted her back. Shen Chutang seemed to have passed out. Her hand fell limp. Shi Chengyu helped her up, held her in his arms, and looked at her dazed eyes. His heart felt like it was being pierced. He used a towel to wipe her face, took the water cup from the maid, and his voice was choked. “Tangtang, be good, drink some water.”
Shen Chutang shook her head weakly. Her voice was hoarse and weak. “No, it’s medicine…”
“No, Tangtang, be good, taste a little, just a little.”
Shen Chutang was stunned. She took a small sip. Shi Chengyu took the opportunity to feed her a big gulp. When you’re sick, everything in your mouth tastes bitter. Shen Chutang refused to drink anymore. She slumped limply in Shi Chengyu’s arms.
