Chapter 34: Wife, What Are You Doing?
Even though he had anticipated the hot sale of the cold noodles, Gu Yunze was still surprised by the large workshop. He was especially amazed when he heard they sold two to three thousand servings of cold noodles daily, and he admired his wife immensely.
After staying at the workshop for more than ten minutes, the two of them headed home.
Gu Yunze rode his bicycle, with Jiang Yiyi sitting behind him. She carried Gu Yunze’s backpack, with the newly bought clothes on her lap, one hand holding them down, and the other… the other hand around Gu Yunze’s waist.
Anyway, she and Gu Yunze were husband and wife, so what was wrong with putting her arm around his waist?
Jiang Yiyi thought to herself, quite openly.
It was simply that she couldn’t help it; the road was too bumpy. If she didn’t hold on, she would easily be thrown off the bike.
“Gu Yunze, how many days will you be staying home?”
“Seven days.”
Seven days?
Isn’t a typical family visit leave only three days? Why would he stay home for seven days?
“I earned merit on this mission, so my superiors gave me extra leave.”
As if knowing her thoughts, or perhaps explaining, Gu Yunze said.
If it were three days, she could still find a way to get around it. But seven days? How could she possibly cover it up? Could she still use the original owner’s excuse and say she had her period? But Gu’s mother and Gu Yunchi knew her cycle; that excuse wouldn’t work at all.
Just as Jiang Yiyi was racking her brains for an excuse, Gu Yunze’s voice rang out, sounding exceptionally clear in the quiet night.
“Wife, I’m a little troubled.”
“What’s troubling you?”
Jiang Yiyi subconsciously asked back.
“I’m going to be eating soft rice in the future. Will that affect your image of me?”
Completely unprepared for him to say such a thing, Jiang Yiyi subconsciously gasped.
“It’s affected you, indeed…”
Gu Yunze got off the bicycle, turning to look at her. “Wife, you won’t leave me, will you?”
Gazed upon by his gentle eyes, Jiang Yiyi’s mind went blank.
“N-no.”
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”
Gu Yunze kissed her forehead. “My wife is the best wife in the world.”
Jiang Yiyi stared at him blankly.
Gu Yunze really wanted to kiss her somewhere else, to kiss until the end of time, but he knew better. If his wife sensed his intentions, it wouldn’t be good. He turned around, got back on his bicycle and continued forward, a smile playing on his lips.
Only after being jolted did she belatedly realize what she had agreed to. She had been charmed.
But she didn’t reject this feeling; instead, she felt a little happy.
But then a thought arose: Was Gu Yunze being kind to her or to the original owner?
Logically, he had only spent one day with the original owner, and they hadn’t even been together on their wedding night. He shouldn’t have such strong feelings, but what if he did? She didn’t want to be a replacement.
For some reason, thinking that Gu Yunze had married the original owner, Jiang Yiyi felt a little jealous, and the words blurted out, “Gu Yunze, do you like me now or the original me?”
As soon as she asked, she regretted it. What if Gu Yunze said he liked both? How would she react?
“Of course, it’s you now.”
…
Jiang Yiyi said she would be back today, but she hadn’t shown up yet. Not only was Gu’s mother worried, but Gu Yunchi was also very worried, and had gone out to check countless times.
At this moment, having just returned to the courtyard and hearing the sound of the gate opening, Gu Yunchi hurried to greet them, but upon seeing Gu Yunze, she was stunned for a moment, then ran towards him joyfully. “Brother, how did you come back?”
They were fraternal twins, having grown up together since childhood, their bond naturally deeper than that of ordinary siblings.
Hearing her voice, Gu’s mother, Gu Yunyang, and Gu Yuncan also ran out of the house. Especially Gu Yunyang, he threw himself into Gu Yunze’s arms, hugging him tightly.
Two years ago, when his older brother returned to the army, he was still young. But he was the only man in the family, and he had to take care of his mother and the family. It was so hard, especially when he found out that his sister-in-law had someone else, he almost couldn’t bear it. If his sister-in-law hadn’t woken up in time, he would have written a letter to his brother.
Gu Yunze patted his head and then patted Gu Yuncan’s.
Gu Yunyang shyly let go.
Gu Yunze looked at his mother. “Mother.”
Gu’s mother was overjoyed. “It’s good you’re back, it’s good you’re back.”
Tiantian and Yueyue hadn’t seen Gu Yunze before, and looked at him curiously.
Gu Yunze learned from Gu Yunchi’s letter that she had given birth to two daughters. He propped up his bicycle and knelt in front of them. “You two are Tiantian and Yueyue, right? I’m your uncle.”
“Uncle.”
“Uncle.”
Gu Yunze picked them up. The soft and tender little girls were just like his younger sister when she was little.
Everyone went into the house, and Jiang Yiyi took out the clothes she had bought for them. Tiantian and Yueyue had never seen such beautiful clothes before, and couldn’t wait to change into them.
Gu Yunyang and Gu Yuncan were about the same.
Gu Yunchi went to the kitchen to heat up the food, and dinner was quite sumptuous: braised pork ribs, fragrant pork trotters, braised eggplant, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, cold cucumber salad, and stir-fried green peppers with pork.
The braised pork ribs and fragrant pork trotters were bought from the state-run restaurant. Gu’s mother thought that Jiang Yiyi probably hadn’t eaten well these days, so she specifically told Gu Yunchi to buy them.
After dinner, Gu Yunze went to Gu’s mother’s room to talk, and only then did he learn that Gu Yunchi had divorced, and how the Qin family had treated Gu Yunchi.
“If my sister-in-law hadn’t supported me, I wouldn’t have been so decisive in divorcing.”
Gu Yunchi would forever be grateful to her sister-in-law for giving her the courage. She was also a child doted on by her parents, and had hardly ever been scolded, yet she was repeatedly bullied by the Qin family. For the sake of her two children, she could only endure it, but this only led to the Qin family’s escalation of their bullying. Even so, she didn’t dare to divorce. If she divorced and returned to her parents’ home, she would be a burden on them.
“Yes, if it weren’t for Yiyi, Chi’er wouldn’t know how she would have been bullied by the Qin family, and we wouldn’t have our good life now. Yunze, you must treat your wife well. If you dare to bully her, I won’t spare you.”
“Mom…” Gu Yunchi joked, “Brother’s eyes are glued to Sister-in-law. How could he bear to bully her?”
She was a person who had been through it all, and she could see clearly that her brother’s eyes were full of his sister-in-law.
Gu’s mother chased them away. “It’s not early, go back to your room quickly, we need to sleep too.”
After he left, Gu’s mother also chased Gu Yunyang and Gu Yuncan back to their room to sleep.
…
After Jiang Yiyi took a shower and lay in bed, she racked her brains on how to get through the next few days. Before she could figure it out, she heard footsteps coming towards her, and immediately became nervous.
Gu Yunze entered the room, met her gaze, and calmly asked, “Wife, where’s my bag? It has my change of clothes.”
“In the leftmost cabinet.”
Gu Yunze opened the cabinet, took out the bag, unzipped it, found his change of clothes, zipped it back up, put the bag back, and took the clothes to the bathroom.
Jiang Yiyi not only didn’t relax, but became even more nervous.
She scrambled out of bed, took a blanket from the cabinet and put it in the middle of the bed. Then she thought it was too obvious, so she put the blanket back and put a pillow in the middle. She thought that wasn’t right either, so she took out other things, but nothing seemed to work. Just when she didn’t know what to do, Gu Yunze’s voice rang out, “Wife, what are you doing?”
