Chapter 13.2
This realization made Lu Dashan shudder. He couldn’t stand to stay any longer. Without even calling for Jiang Guihua, he panicked and ran back to his own house.
Seeing him leave, Jiang Guihua, terrified by the unfamiliar sight of Lu Chen, dared not stay alone any longer. She quickly fled as well.
The yard was quiet again, with only Lu Chen remaining.
But at that moment, he had no interest in cooking anymore.
Standing still, his expression cold, Lu Chen looked at his hand, which he hadn’t been able to control earlier, and stood there for a long while. Finally, he pursed his lips and went into the house.
He hadn’t intended to sever ties with Lu Dashan so soon, but given the events that just occurred, he knew Lu Dashan would likely start to suspect him, maybe even become defensive.
Now, he realized he had to speed things up.
That afternoon, Lu Chen didn’t have lunch at home. Instead, he went straight to the brigade leader’s house.
…
Lu Dashan and Jiang Guihua were furious when they returned home. The unusual behavior of Lu Chen had completely thrown them off balance. They only managed to calm down when they saw Wang Chengwen and his younger brother.
When Lu Xiujuan saw them return, she hurriedly asked how things went.
Lu Dashan hesitated to say that not only had he learned nothing from Lu Chen, but he had almost been slapped by that reckless nephew of his.
Avoiding the question, he suggested something else.
“Son-in-law, do you want to see that Educated Youth Meng? I know she’s going to work this afternoon. How about I take you to see her? Don’t worry, I’ll take you to a place where no one else can see. It’ll be kept secret.”
Wang Chengwen was surprised that Lu Dashan had offered to take them to see Meng Yinyin. After some hesitation, he looked at his younger brother Wang Chengwu.
Wang Chengwu replied, “If it’s not too much trouble, then thank you, Uncle Lu.”
“It’s no trouble at all. We’ll go after lunch. Xiujuan, take them around while your mother and I cook lunch!”
Lu Xiujuan nodded and then led Wang Chengwen and Wang Chengwu outside.
On their way out, they had to pass by Lu Chen’s house.
Wang Chengwu had seen Lu Chen go through the small door between the two yards earlier and knew that the house next door belonged to Lu Chen.
As they passed the yard, Wang Chengwu couldn’t help but glance over again, and it didn’t escape Lu Xiujuan’s nervous gaze.
Wang Chengwu was beginning to suspect that there was something more between his sister-in-law’s family and Lu Chen than what met the eye.
Pretending not to notice, he didn’t ask any further, but managed to see Lu Xiujuan visibly relax.
The three of them casually wandered around the village and soon returned to the Lu household for lunch.
After the afternoon rest, Meng Yinyin left the Educated Youth point with a frown on her face.
She had woken up angry because she had seen Song Yue, especially when he smiled at her holding a notebook to mark points. It was obvious he would come to inspect things again that afternoon.
This afternoon, she was probably going to end up with zero work points again.
Although she had gotten used to it, she found Song Yue extremely annoying!
Especially since she didn’t even dare to imagine how the brigade leader would react when he found out that she had done nothing all day.
It would be bad enough if he just called her over for a lecture, what she feared even more was that in a fit of anger, he might send her away.
Ugh!
Meng Yinyin let out a painful groan. It seemed that her plan to win over Lu Chen had to be sped up.
When she arrived at the work site, Meng Yinyin found that Lu Chen had already gotten there ahead of her and had already started working in the field.
Meng Yinyin couldn’t help but feel both envious and emotional.
Just looking at how hardworking Lu Chen was, there was no doubt that he could support her. She promised to eat as little as possible.
The afternoon went much like the morning. After Meng Yinyin arrived, Lu Chen made her another flower crown and then threw himself into his work wholeheartedly.
Not long after, Song Yue arrived. Meng Yinyin noticed him out of the corner of her eye but didn’t even bother to glance at him. Instead, she closed her eyes and pretended to sleep.
Song Yue didn’t think much of it either. As usual, he just stood there, waiting for Meng Yinyin to fall asleep and stop doing anything before he turned and left to go somewhere else.
As he left, he saw Lu Dashan walking toward him with two men.
One of them looked familiar. It seemed to be Lu Dashan’s new son-in-law.
As for the other man?
Song Yue narrowed his eyes and smiled as he walked up to them.
“Uncle Lu, where are you going?”
Lu Dashan saw Song Yue and didn’t take him seriously. He just smiled and explained, “Oh, it’s just my son-in-law. He wanted to have a look around, so I brought him out. Don’t worry, Educated Youth Song. I’ll make sure to finish the work within the required time.”
Song Yue smiled, “I trust Uncle Lu, so I won’t disturb you. Enjoy your walk.”
With that, they passed each other.
However, after walking a few steps, Song Yue’s curiosity got the better of him.
He had just come from the direction Lu Dashan and the others were heading. But over there, aside from fields, there was nothing worth looking at.
Except for a certain sleeping beauty with a flower crown.
The other man walking with Lu Dashan seemed to be of marriageable age. Could it be…?
If that were the case, things could get interesting.
Thinking about how Lu Chen was so protective, like a hungry wolf guarding its food, Song Yue couldn’t help but chuckle, though the smile didn’t reach his eyes.
Someone like him, dreaming?
Meanwhile, Lu Dashan, with Wang Chengwu and his brother, soon arrived at the spot where Lu Chen and Meng Yinyin were working. To be cautious, the three didn’t approach too closely but stood far enough to see Meng Yinyin.
When Lu Dashan saw Meng Yinyin lying on the grass, sleeping during work hours, he couldn’t help but scoff.
Anyone who marries someone like her would be married to a lazy person. Only a fool would bring someone home to live off of.
However, as he thought this, he noticed Wang Chengwu’s eyes light up, a flash of admiration crossing his face.
Seeing this, Lu Dashan felt more confident.
It seemed that this man had taken an interest.
“Xiao Wu, that’s Educated Youth Meng. She must be tired from working, so she’s resting now. She probably didn’t mean to slack off.”
Lu Dashan, hoping to facilitate a marriage, was doing his best to cover for Meng Yinyin’s lazy reputation.
But Wang Chengwu didn’t mind whether she was lazy or diligent.
After all, even if she did nothing at all, their family could still support her without any issues.
What mattered to Wang Chengwu was that Meng Yinyin’s appearance and temperament were exactly what he had envisioned for a wife, if not even better.
“Xiao Wu?”
Wang Chengwu’s older brother, Wang Chengwen, noticed his younger brother lost in thought and called his name.
Wang Chengwu snapped out of it and smiled for the first time that day.
“Brother, let’s go back.”
Wang Chengwen nodded, then asked, “So what are you thinking now? Are you interested, or…?”
Wang Chengwu was helpless at his brother’s lack of insight.
“Brother, I plan to have mom find a matchmaker when we get back. What do you think?”
Wang Chengwen finally smiled.
“Ah, that’s good, that’s good. Let’s hurry back so we don’t waste any more time!”
Listening to them, Lu Dashan felt even more certain that things were moving forward.
As for whether Meng Yinyin would reject the idea, that didn’t even cross his mind.
After all, in his view, anyone who wasn’t a fool wouldn’t turn down an offer from the Wang family.
The three of them arrived quickly and left just as quickly, and except for Song Yue, no one else knew they had been there.
In the afternoon, when Meng Yinyin woke up, Lu Chen had already finished all the work for the day and even completed some of tomorrow’s tasks.
When he saw that she was awake, Lu Chen handed her the plastic film he had brought earlier and a pair of scissors. Noticing her confused look, he explained.
“Cut the film, and you’ll earn work points.”
Meng Yinyin immediately understood and gave Lu Chen a grateful smile.
“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to finish the task!”
If she couldn’t even manage a simple task like this, she wouldn’t be lazy – she’d have a serious problem.
After Lu Chen demonstrated how to cut the film, Meng Yinyin lowered her head and got to work on the task he had specifically found for her.
Although this task would probably only earn her two work points, two was better than nothing!
So, when Song Yue returned, he found Meng Yinyin in a good mood, leisurely cutting plastic film.
Noticing Song Yue’s figure, Meng Yinyin couldn’t help but hum deliberately, as if saying to him: “If you think you can give me zero work points again, you can forget it!”
Song Yue wasn’t angry, still wearing his usual good-natured expression. However, when he glanced at Lu Chen, who was working on the next stage of labor, his smile suddenly became more meaningful.
He hadn’t realized it before, but this kid really treated Meng Yinyin well. It seemed like he was trying every possible way to help her earn work points.
But did he know? For someone like Meng Yinyin, instead of trying all these methods to help her earn those two meager points, it would be better to just keep her at home and not make her work at all.
That would be the best arrangement for her.
Unfortunately, someone like Lu Chen probably didn’t have the ability to do that.
Song Yue was eager to see the look on Lu Chen’s face when he saw Meng Yinyin marry into the city. It would probably be painful for him, and yet, there would be nothing he could do to stop it.
Would he be helplessly furious?
Interesting indeed.
Song Yue smiled even more happily.
