Chapter 21 Rong Qing, you are back? Who is this?
Gu Rongqing suddenly felt a chill run down his neck, especially when he saw the meaningful look in his wife’s eyes.
“Zheng Xuan is the military doctor in our unit. When I was injured before, she was my attending physician, responsible for my follow-up routine check-ups. She’s probably just here to ask about that,” Gu Rongqing explained.
“Oh~ an attending physician, huh,” Ruan Xiangxiang nodded, her tone neutral.
In her mind, an old Korean drama popped up—“Descendants of the Sun”—the story of a military doctor and a handsome officer. Ugh, she was jealous. She admitted it. She was having some minor emotions.
Gu Rongqing was a very perceptive man and immediately sensed that something was off with her mood. He wasn’t one of those clueless guys who always said “women are impossible to figure out.” To have made it to the rank of regiment commander, his observation and sensitivity were top-notch.
And this was the girl he had fallen for at first sight—of course he’d notice even the subtlest shift in her emotions.
If he pretended not to know, that would just be shameless.
He was sure Xiangxiang was jealous. But unlike some men who might feel flattered when a woman gets jealous, he felt it was his fault—he must’ve given her reason to overthink things. So it had to be explained, clearly!
“I’ve only had routine medical contact with her. That’s it. If it makes you uncomfortable, I’ll talk to the leadership later and request a different attending physician. Sound good?”
His tone was full of guilt. Xiangxiang had already endured too much mistreatment from her own family—he, as her husband, would never let her suffer again.
Meanwhile, the carefree Lu Hang in the backseat hadn’t noticed the subtle tension at all and cheerfully said, “Sister-in-law, Dr. Zheng is a really nice person. She really cares about Qing-ge’s health.”
“Enough. You get off here,” Gu Rongqing said bluntly.
“Huh? But we’re almost at the family quarters, let me see you in—”
“No need.”
And just like that, the poor driver was unceremoniously kicked out of the car.
Lu Hang stood by the roadside scratching his head, completely confused.
Back in the car, Gu Rongqing kept glancing into the rearview mirror, trying to coax her with a whiny voice:
“Xiangxiang? Xiangxiang? Say something, don’t ignore me~”
“Please don’t ignore your hubby, okay? Hubby will go ask for a new doctor right away~”
“Talk to me, please~ please~”
Hearing him talk in that high-pitched, TikTok-style voice, Ruan Xiangxiang couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
“Alright, stop it already—you’re gonna strain your voice.”
“Okay… cough cough, so you’re not mad anymore, right? I’ll take you out to eat something yummy later.”
Gu Rongqing cleared his throat. That voice he just made? He had no idea how it even came out of his mouth—thinking back, it was a little childish. But at least his wife was smiling now.
Ruan Xiangxiang began counting her fingers—long and slender, with plump, neat nails. The more she looked, the more she admired them. Wow, even my fingers are pretty.
Wait—what did Gu Rongqing just say?
Oops. She got distracted by her own beauty again…
Seeing the happy smile on her face, Gu Rongqing knew the little girl wasn’t upset anymore.
To be honest, Xiangxiang wasn’t really mad in the first place. She just suddenly thought of that Korean drama—handsome male lead, beautiful female doctor, a picture-perfect couple who even became a real-life couple off-screen.
But so what? In the end, they still broke up—and it wasn’t a pretty ending either.
So love… it was hard to keep it going long-term. Gu Rongqing might be treating her well now, but who knew what would happen in the future?
The only thing she could do was strengthen herself—become someone who always had the courage to walk away if needed.
Soon, they arrived at the family quarters—Gu Rongqing’s dorm.
Since he had been single before, he only had a one-room setup and hadn’t gotten a chance to apply for a larger place.
“It’s a bit cramped, but I’ll write a request later to apply for a bigger apartment. The leadership said that once I got married, they’d arrange a new place right away. Shouldn’t take long. For now, you’ll have to make do with this.”
“It’s fine,” Ruan Xiangxiang smiled. “Even though it’s just a single room, it’s not that small. Plus, it has its own bathroom and small kitchen—it’s really convenient.”
She was quite satisfied with the space. It was far better than what the original host had lived in.
Besides, Gu Rongqing was a clean freak. Even as a bachelor, he kept his place tidy and organized.
The bed was made military-style—perfect square corners. Towels and cups were neatly arranged in the bathroom and kitchen. The furniture wasn’t new, but it was spotless and gave off a comforting vibe.
After a long journey, Xiangxiang just wanted a bath. Gu Rongqing didn’t hesitate—he immediately went to boil water. The dorm didn’t have a water heater yet, after all.
While she bathed, Gu Rongqing unpacked their luggage and hung her dress next to his military uniform. As he looked at the two outfits hanging side-by-side, his lips curled into a smile—not only did he have a partner now, but even his uniform had a companion.
After the bath, Xiangxiang’s stomach was growling. Since they had no groceries at the dorm, they decided to eat at the mess hall.
She put on a white dress and let her thick, chestnut-brown wavy hair fall over her shoulders. She looked gentle, elegant, and intellectual.
Gu Rongqing confidently took her hand and led her downstairs.
Neither of them noticed the stunned expressions of the soldiers and family members behind them—their jaws practically dropped to the ground!
What did they just see?!
Their always cold and serious Captain Gu was smiling lovingly and holding hands with an incredibly beautiful girl!
Ruan Xiangxiang wasn’t shy at all. Seeing their surprised faces, she smiled and waved at everyone.
“This is my wife,” Gu Rongqing introduced calmly.
As the couple walked into the cafeteria, a crowd of curious onlookers trailed behind them like ducklings.
“You guys have nothing better to do, huh? If you’re that free, go run five kilometers!” Gu Rongqing barked.
Everyone immediately scattered like mice.
Xiangxiang kept smiling and waved them goodbye.
Just then, a clear, surprised female voice rang out:
“Rongqing? You’re finally back? Who is this?”
Ruan Xiangxiang turned around and saw a pretty girl around 25 years old, staring at their joined hands in disbelief.
She instinctively tried to pull her hand away, but to her surprise, Gu Rongqing tightened his grip.
