Chapter 75: A Path of Certain Death
“Everyone on alert!! Everyone on alert!! Zombies are attacking!!”
“All combat personnel proceed to the safe zone entrance, enter your designated sections, assemble and count quickly!! Prepare for battle!!”
The alarm sounded repeatedly, piercing through the night sky, abrupt and terrifying.
Due to the zombie threat, the power supply had been restored, and lights quickly lit up all the buildings.
Even before the alarm started blaring, Fu Jingmo had already sat up in bed. He moved behind the curtains and looked outside.
Everyone quickly gathered at the main gate of the safe zone. The perimeter of the safe zone was divided into over 30 sections, with each section consisting of a group of ten people.
There were always people on night watch, keeping an eye on the outside. Any slight disturbance would trigger an alarm.
At this moment, thousands of zombies were swarming densely toward the safe zone. Under the dim moonlight, they roared and staggered forward, inching closer and closer to the safe zone.
Lin Mu tossed aside his pillow, rolled over, and got up, asking coldly, “What’s going on?”
“Zombies are coming. Let’s go!”
The two had been sleeping in their clothes, so they pulled open the door and headed downstairs, running into Shen Rangchen coming towards them.
He Ze also emerged from his room, rubbing his eyes.
“Move quickly!”
Fu Jingmo shouted coldly, instantly snapping He Ze out of his drowsiness. The group quickly moved towards the gate, following the crowd.
Behind them, the lights in the buildings suddenly dimmed. Fu Jingmo glanced back; it seemed that all the power had been redirected to the electric grid of the first layer of defense.
Inside the walls, everyone who had taken their positions quickly climbed up the ladders to the top of the wall.
Those without abilities stood on the wall with guns in hand, while strength ability users wielded modified long knives or sharpened iron rods. There were also others with various abilities who, through countless training sessions, had chosen weapons that suited them.
Everyone was on high alert. Along the wall, at intervals, were pits filled with fuel, torches burning brightly.
In an instant, the scorching flames intertwined with the cold moonlight, illuminating the entire perimeter of the safe zone as bright as day!
“Captain Fu! The section by the gate is yours!”
Wen Tang’s voice came from above. She stood straight and slender on top of the wall, holding a large white megaphone, issuing commands with calmness and decisiveness.
Everyone moved with composure. Ordinary people who couldn’t use guns or didn’t have abilities stayed below, orderly transporting ammunition, stones, and other supplies up the wall, ready to resupply at any moment. The area buzzed with activity and voices.
In the fearful eyes of everyone, the reflections of thousands of zombies could be seen, stretching endlessly with no visible end. With nothing to stop them, the zombies advanced rapidly, and in just the blink of an eye, they had already reached the outer edge of the electric grid.
Lin Mu and the others climbed up to the top of the wall. Their designated area was the entire gate section, about 20 meters to the left and right—this was the position the four of them had to defend today!
“So many…!”
He Ze muttered as he stared at the zombies in front of him.
They came in an endless stream, one after another, from unknown origins, with only one goal: the safe zone!
The moment they approached the electric grid, Wen Tang shouted sharply, “Activate the electric grid!!”
Yu Hong immediately rushed to the electrical box and pulled the lever down hard.
A buzzing sound followed.
Electric sparks instantly surged across the first layer of defensive electric grid, about ten meters in front of the concrete wall. In an instant, sparks flew wildly, and the front line of zombies didn’t even have time to twitch before they were electrocuted into charred remains!
The stench of decay mixed with the smell of burning flesh wafted through the night air, making everyone feel nauseous.
However, no one let their guard down, because this small number of zombies was nothing compared to the seemingly endless horde behind them—it was simply far too few.
The electric grid was just an iron net, and the electrocuted zombies gradually piled up against it. The zombies coming after them stepped on the bodies in front, continuing to push forward.
Wave after wave, the pressure mounted, and finally, the electric grid was pushed down. The hideous zombies squeezed through, stepping over the fallen grid and advancing toward the concrete wall.
The concrete wall was only two meters high and 60 centimeters wide. Looking down, there were countless zombies with gaping mouths, their sharp claws scratching at the concrete, glaring upward as they roared and screamed, the sound deafening.
Wen Tang took a deep breath and shouted, “Shoot! Kill them all!!!”
Gunfire erupted in response, and the people on the wall stood their ground without taking a single step back. They couldn’t retreat—behind them were unarmed civilians, their families, and their children!
Fu Jingmo wielded a heavy machine gun, with ammunition belts being passed up from below the wall. His expression was grim as he crouched down to load the gun. His fingers moved deftly, and he raised the gun, firing relentlessly, with shell casings flying everywhere.
One shot, one kill; in an instant, he suppressed the front row of zombies, keeping them five meters away.
Lin Mu unleashed his vines. Compared to using a gun, this suited him better; with each lash, he could rip off the heads of several zombies at once.
He Ze’s training had also shown results. At least with a few water arrows, he was able to take down one or two zombies.
Gunfire, screams, and the growls of zombies roared in their ears.
Everyone had only one goal in their minds: to eliminate the zombies within their range and hold their section of the concrete wall!
Below the wall, an unending tide of zombies surged forward. Under the relentless barrage of machine gun fire, the re-killed zombies gradually piled up. The mindless zombies felt no fear and would not retreat.
Amidst the hail of bullets, they only knew how to advance, stepping over the piles of fallen zombies, extending their decayed arms to grab at the people on the concrete wall.
The first person fell from the wall and was instantly torn to pieces by the swarm of zombies that rushed in.
Blood splattered everywhere, and the scent of it drove the zombies into an even greater frenzy, making them even more desperate.
Half an hour, an hour…
There were no signs of it stopping.
Lin Mu was drenched in sweat, his loose short-sleeve T-shirt soaked through.
Finally, Fu Jingmo’s gun ran out of ammunition. He tossed the gun aside and threw out several black crystals.
Below the wall, the gunfire from the pits became sporadic.
The situation suddenly became critical. Lin Mu turned his head and used his vines to pull up a young man who was about to fall off the right side of the wall. There was no time for thanks.
The young man grabbed a stick from nearby and resumed stabbing the zombies below.
“Mumu, how are we supposed to kill them all?!”
He Ze, exhausted from the day’s training, had already depleted his abilities. Now, he was wielding an iron rod, bashing the zombies’ heads.
If this continued, even the pile of zombie corpses would eventually stack as high as the wall, and when that happened, the zombies behind would just climb right up!
From the moment he saw the zombie horde, Lin Mu’s first thought was of that mutated zombie from the supermarket.
Why?
Why were the zombies suddenly attacking the safe zone, all at once, coming together in unison?
It was as if they were under some kind of command!
And the only one capable of that was the mutated zombie!
They couldn’t kill them all; with over two million people in Wu City, even if given several days and nights, they still wouldn’t be able to kill them all!
Wen Tang had already descended from the wall. Inside the safe zone, the last remaining weapons were the two armored vehicles parked behind the training ground, and the helicopters previously used had long since run out of fuel.
“Lin Mu, watch out!”
Two black blades were thrown out as Fu Jingmo shouted loudly. He suddenly leaped off the concrete wall and strode quickly toward Wen Tang.
Lin Mu glanced back briefly before quickly refocusing, gritting his teeth as he continued dealing with the zombies in front of him.
“Get a few of the strongest ability soldiers to go with me to start up the armored vehicles!!”
Fu Jingmo spoke coldly, interrupting Wen Tang’s conversation with the officer beside her.
He had just come down from the wall, still covered in the lingering smell of gunpowder. Standing at 1.9 meters tall with a sharp, commanding presence, he immediately silenced the officer beside him.
“Captain Fu, there are too many zombies out there. Even with the armored vehicles, going out is useless! We won’t be able to move an inch!”
Wen Tang met his gaze, with her brow tightly furrowed. Because of the gunfire, she had to raise her voice to shout.
“This is an order, Lieutenant Wen!”
Fu Jingmo’s eyes were cold and unyielding. By addressing her by rank, he was asserting his own authority.
Unless that mutated zombie was dealt with, they would run out of ammunition and supplies, leading to total annihilation.
They had no time to hesitate!
Wen Tang hesitated for a moment, gritting her teeth as she looked at him. “Yes, Major, but there aren’t many special mutants in the safe zone.”
“Get the soldiers—those who follow orders and aren’t afraid to die!”
Wen Tang quickly turned and ordered the officers to call back the mutants.
In less than five minutes, eight people were assembled, standing in a line at the front.
“Major, if you need powerful mutants, your friend?”
Her implication was clear—Lin Mu’s ability could be very useful.
Fu Jingmo turned his head and took a long, hard look at the person on the wall. Lin Mu’s silhouette, illuminated by the flames, appeared slender yet incredibly resilient, showing neither fear nor retreat.
“No need.”
This was a path leading to certain death, and Lin Mu was just an ordinary civilian. There was no need for him to make that sacrifice.
Fu Jingmo withdrew his gaze and began organizing the personnel, taking inventory of the weapons.
On the concrete wall, Lin Mu seemed to sense something. He swung his vine, killing the row of zombies in front of him, and glanced back in Fu Jingmo’s direction.
