Chapter 92: Ability Upgrade
Lin Mu swung his whip back, lashing out. The black gorilla leaped, hooking onto the edge of the roof and flipping up onto it.
Immediately after, a person behind him threw a dark red sphere toward Lin Mu. He quickly dodged, and the sphere collided with the concrete ground, producing a “bang” sound as it exploded, leaving a small crater on the ground.
The explosion wasn’t very powerful, but if it had struck a person, it would definitely have drawn blood.
“Brothers, kill them! Blast open the space and we’ll live the high life!” The man with inverted triangle eyes shouted viciously.
The other three held a long sword and a large axe; they were likely strength-mutated individuals, not too much of a threat.
The most challenging opponent was the black gorilla on the roof. Mutated animals weren’t terrifying, but the mutated humans fused with animals were. Not only did they grow in height and size, but they also gained all the instinctive traits of the animals. This black gorilla before them had extremely strong climbing abilities.
“Mumu, leave this one to me!”
Lin Mu faced off against the black gorilla, while He Ze charged toward the person throwing bombs.
He moved swiftly, dodging with agility, and after a few quick strides, he put some distance between them. Water arrows shot out, instantly angering the bomber.
He Ze had always been highly athletic. After the apocalypse, he had followed Lin Mu and Fu Jingmo into several battles and received training from Ji Huaizhi, which made his progress rapid.
The water arrow tore through the man’s pants, immediately leaving a streak of blood. The bomber’s eyes turned red with rage, and he charged forward, recklessly throwing bombs as if they cost nothing.
“Bleh bleh bleh, you piece of trash, you think you can catch up with your grandpa?”
“Those little bombs of yours are weaker than the firecrackers I threw when I was five.”
“If I had a useless ability like yours, I’d hide at home and wouldn’t dare show my face.”
“#$%…%@&…%*%@…&^”
He Ze’s taunting, full of insults, made the bomber’s face twist with rage. “You brat, shut up!”
“You think I’ll shut up just because you told me to? No respect for your elders. If you’ve got the guts, come on, blow me up! Do it!”
“Bang!!”
A bomb landed right at He Ze’s feet. Clearly, the bomber had been provoked to the point of losing his mind, no longer even controlling the energy output. He just wanted to kill that arrogant loudmouth in front of him.
Lin Mu listened to the sound of He Ze running further away, a twitch forming at his temple. Is it still too late to pretend he doesn’t know him…
The black gorilla on the roof muttered under its breath, “Idiot.”
It leaped down from above Lin Mu, its two massive fists wrapped in a gust of wind, aiming straight for Lin Mu’s head.
Lin Mu quickly regained his focus, rolling aside to dodge the attack. He swung his vine whip down hard, striking the gorilla’s shoulder and leaving a bloody gash, though it wasn’t very deep.
The gorilla’s shoulder went numb on one side, and with a furious roar, it shook its hand, then launched forward with a powerful kick from its muscular legs.
He was like a natural-born boxer, throwing heavy punches. Lin Mu dodged left and right, using his agility to evade a few strikes, while the concrete ground cracked with every hit.
The terrifying aspect of mutated humans was that they possessed the amplified traits of animals, while the animals gained human intelligence.
Next to them was the entrance to a resting area for vehicles, blocked by yellow and black striped iron railings. The black gorilla swung a fist across, shattering the posts with its immense strength, and ripped up the over three-meter-long railing.
In an instant, the railing swept past Lin Mu, and the black gorilla swung it continuously at him. In its hands, the iron railing seemed as light as a wooden stick.
The parked vehicles in the open space were all caught in the chaos, their windows shattering with a sharp crack, triggering a chorus of urgent, piercing alarm sounds.
A drop of sweat trailed down the side of Lin Mu’s face as he kept his eyes fixed on the gorilla. There was no doubt that if that railing struck him, his bones would shatter.
Its skin was thick and tough, so Lin Mu flicked his vine whip, changing his strategy. Instead of lashing the gorilla, he revealed the sharp tip of the vine and launched an attack.
The pointed vine aimed for weak spots, eyes, ears, and the neck—moving at a blistering speed. As it grazed past the gorilla’s ear, it finally drew blood.
“Roar!!”
Another furious roar echoed as the sight of blood enraged the gorilla. Naturally skilled at climbing, it used every surface as a springboard, leaping recklessly toward Lin Mu.
Meanwhile, the three strength-mutated individuals split up, with two chasing after He Ze, while the remaining one hid nearby. Whenever an opportunity arose, he swung his axe at Lin Mu, hurling stone fragments from the ground at him like a rainstorm.
Under attack from both sides, even Lin Mu had no choice but to retreat, his breathing growing heavier. As the railing swung toward him, he failed to dodge in time, and a cut opened up on his arm. Blood immediately seeped out, staining the sleeve of his camouflage uniform.
Lin Mu glanced toward the resting area. He could hold these people off, but why were Fu Jingmo and Rangchen still not finished? Could something have gone wrong?
Clenching his teeth, Lin Mu decided not to waste any more time. He split the vine in two-one wrapped around the iron railing, while the other shot straight toward the gorilla’s face.
Before it could react, the sharp tip of the vine swiftly pierced through its bulging black eye, producing a sickening “squelch” as it penetrated the flesh, followed by a howl of pain.
Immediately after, the vine twisted, causing the gorilla’s entire body to convulse as it struggled and roared in agony.
The immense strength of the gorilla tugged at the vine whip, causing Lin Mu’s feet to lift off the ground, while the strength-mutated individual charged forward.
A wave of energy rippled through the air. Lin Mu turned his head to see the resting area shrouded in dense black fog. It was an overwhelming surge of energy, far greater than any he had ever sensed before, as if it might explode and engulf the entire resting area at any moment.
Worry filled Lin Mu’s heart. The outpouring of energy meant that the ability upgrade had reached its most critical point. He needed to end this quickly.
He reached out, grabbing the window of a nearby car. The broken glass on the shattered window sliced into his palm, leaving it bloody and mangled, but it managed to anchor him, preventing the gorilla from dragging him away.
Blood streamed from the gorilla’s eye socket, trickling down the vine and dripping onto the ground. Lin Mu held his ground, directing the vine deeper into the gorilla’s brain.
The strength-mutated individual charged in from the side, swinging his axe down toward Lin Mu’s head. Lin Mu released his grip, using the momentum of the vine to glide away. The axe struck the car instead, carving a deep gash into the vehicle’s body.
In a final burst of desperate strength, the gorilla dropped the railing and grabbed hold of the vine with both hands. Blood seeped from its remaining eye, and its muscles bulged and ruptured as it strained with all its might, pulling the vine out of its bleeding eye socket. Then, with a powerful heave, it hurled Lin Mu through the air.
The force of the throw was beyond what Lin Mu could withstand. He quickly curled his body, doing his best to minimize the impact when he hit the ground.
However, the expected pain didn’t come. Instead, a strong arm wrapped around his waist, and the familiar presence of Fu Jingmo enveloped him completely.
Seeing him emerge safely, Lin Mu finally let go of the tension that had been gripping him. The pain in his palm suddenly became sharp and clear, causing him to hiss in discomfort.
Fu Jingmo, hearing the sound, loosened his grip and carefully set Lin Mu down. The strong scent of blood from Lin Mu reached his nose.
Fu Jingmo’s usually cold voice carried a trace of anger from an unknown source. “Get to the back.”
There was a chill between his brows as he hefted a heavy machine gun onto his shoulder with one hand. Bending slightly, he didn’t even bother to aim before his finger squeezed the trigger.
“Bang, bang, bang!!!!”
In an instant, the machine gun unleashed a barrage of concentrated firepower, each shot landing precisely on the gorilla’s head. The bullet casings flew out, hitting the ground with a continuous clattering sound.
The mutated gorilla staggered back under the relentless firepower, its head instantly turning into a bloody mess before it fell backward with a thud.
The scent of blood quickly filled the air. Fueled by anger, Fu Jingmo swung the gun around, taking out a few staggering zombies in the distance.
Then, he turned the heavy machine gun toward the strength-mutated individual nearby!
