When Qi Kai went inside this time, he found Lin You sitting aside and resting.
The floor was covered in a plastic sheet, with a mountain of vegetables piled up.
He looked incredulously at the freezer: “What’s going on? Did you move all this already?”
Lin You shook her head and held up a long tube: “Tong Lan just went next door to borrow an industrial vacuum cleaner.”
Qi Kai couldn’t help but secretly admire: “…impressive.”
After a pause, he asked: “Did the hardware store next door open?”
Lin You nodded: “The owner sells large hardware, steel plates, and angles. Tong Lan also found a noise-reducing industrial vacuum cleaner.”
Qi Kai responded with an “oh,” bent over, and continued filling the baskets with vegetables.
With no customers outside at the moment, Tong Lan helped sort the fallen vegetables and handed them to Qi Kai.
After filling several large baskets with vegetables, Qi Kai dragged and carried them back to the breakfast shop’s front. The elderly customers’ eyes lit up when they saw them: “Hey, is this a new variety of cabbage? We’ve seen green, we’ve seen purple, but this is the first time we’ve seen light yellow.”
Qi Kai explained: “It’s indeed a new variety, you can buy some to try.”
The elderly folks, curious to try something new, each bought a few yellow cabbages.
Besides that, they also picked up some potatoes, carrots, onions, and sweet potatoes, which stored well.
Carrying large and small bags, as they were about to leave, one elderly man turned around and said: “I’ll drop these off upstairs first and come back down.”
Qi Kai smiled: “It’s good to buy more now, later on, there may be limits on how much people can buy, to prevent food waste or price hikes.”
The elderly man exclaimed: “Ah, I see! I’ll be quick, wait here for me.”
Qi Kai nodded.
So, for the next two hours, Qi Kai rushed in and out of the breakfast shop, moving goods back and forth, selling twenty to thirty baskets of vegetables.
Pork ribs, chicken legs, beef, and lamb were also selling well.
Even the fresh milk flowing from the faucet was being collected in buckets.
He was so busy that he didn’t have time to drink the soy milk that Lin You had handed him.
Thankfully, the milk delivery truck had finally arrived.
Shang Zhisheng brought a few people over. As soon as he got out of the car, he saw Qi Kai panting heavily: “Someone from the Fifth Division, take over for him.”
So, two team members, Qu Fei and Gu Hong, stepped in to help him manage the vegetable sales.
Qi Kai finally stood up, leaned against the wall, and wiped the slight sweat off his forehead, sighing: “This is really exhausting. I can’t take it anymore. If Lin You hadn’t found a high-powered machine, she’d probably be exhausted to the point of her back-breaking.”
Shang Zhisheng heard this and said: “It’s not easy, that’s why I brought someone over.”
Qi Kai caught his breath and asked: “Who?”
Shang Zhisheng replied: “People from the Fifth Division. I applied to your team leader, and since there weren’t enough people before, besides Lin You and her best friend, we need at least three to five fixed people here. They’ll rotate between moving vegetables, selling vegetables, and someone has to be in charge of loading the fresh milk onto the truck.”
Qi Kai sighed: “That’s great.”
Shang Zhisheng stepped forward and gave his shoulder a light pat: “You’ve worked hard.”
He then strode into the breakfast shop.
As soon as he entered the kitchen, he saw that Lin You had a machine next to her.
She first turned on the machine, which sucked out many items from the freezer at once.
Then, she turned off the machine. The suction stopped suddenly, causing all the vegetables on the nozzle to fall off.
After that, the freezer automatically began restocking.
A large pile of ingredients rolled out, and as it rolled, new varieties started to appear.
Shang Zhisheng picked up an orange-red broccoli from the ground, furrowing his brows: “Did this cross with carrots?”
Lin You awkwardly smiled: “…Maybe. I moved a lot of stuff this morning, and when it auto-restocked, many unfamiliar vegetables appeared.”
Shang Zhisheng said: “Well, new varieties are good, they might even have new uses.”
He handed Lin You the newly printed test report and continued: “These vegetables have really become something else. We had Qingze test them again, and the components are a bit different now.”
Lin You looked down.
The safety levels of every ingredient were still above the standard line.
As for the nutritional indicators… they were fully maxed out.
For example, spinach usually contains high oxalates and purines, which should be blanched before eating.
But the spinach coming out of the freezer now had oxalates and purines below the average level, so there was no need to blanch it. People with high uric acid, prone to gout, could eat it normally.
Also, the healing factors in the vegetables had received an upgrade—now 30% more effective than before.
This meant that eating these vegetables could help wounds heal faster.
Lin You couldn’t help but be shocked.
Outside, several baskets of vegetables had sold out again, and Qu Fei and the others came in to get more.
Shang Zhisheng crouched down to help them move the vegetables and said to Lin You: “Looks like these things really need to be tested regularly, maybe they’ll show even more surprising results in the future.”
Lin You nodded.
After filling a basket, Shang Zhisheng looked up and pulled out a few printed QR codes from his pocket, saying to Lin You:
“The network is set up. Your cashier system is now directly matched. When someone comes to buy vegetables, they scan this QR code, authenticate their real identity, and if their personal information is correct, they can buy within the limited range. As for the cashiering process, just follow the previous method. If someone buys too much at once or frequently, we will consider them as hoarding, and the system will automatically pop up a message. At that point, just have Qi Kai and the others handle it.”
Lin You took the QR codes and said: “Okay.”
Shang Zhisheng continued: “Once the official procedures are done, our food and material reserves center will invest funds and take a small stake. You’ll be the major shareholder, but we still need to discuss Tong Lan’s situation. With this organizational structure in place, it’ll be easier to avoid disputes in the future, including with you and Tong Lan. Even though you’re best friends, the accounts need to be settled clearly.”
Lin You said: “It’s best if the official side decides.”
Shang Zhisheng paused for a moment. Seeing Lin You once again use the industrial vacuum cleaner to suck the vegetables over, he couldn’t help but ask, “If you’re using the vacuum cleaner to suck them over, do you still have to pick them up yourself? Let me give it a try?”
Lin You handed him the nozzle.
As Shang Zhisheng turned on the machine, he remembered something:
“By the way, the healing function in the vegetables, you can mention it briefly in your interview. Just say it’s a specially cultivated variety and that we hope patients who need wound healing will come to buy.”
Lin You replied: “Mhm, I got it.”
Shang Zhisheng placed the nozzle near the freezer.
The suction was very strong, the air whooshing into the vacuum, but the vegetables still remained completely still.
“I’ll turn the suction to the maximum and see. These things might not be able to handle it.”
He said, turning the switch to the highest setting. The wind from the suction was so strong that even the fridge magnets on the freezer slid off, but the vegetables inside still didn’t move.
Lin You had no choice but to take the nozzle back.
As soon as she took it, everything changed.
The vegetables rushed out one after another, one batch after another. Some stuck to the vacuum nozzle, while others fell to the ground with the force of the wind.
Shang Zhisheng shrugged, a little helpless: “They only listen to you.”
After a pause, he continued: “With this in mind, although the industrial vacuum cleaner makes the ingredients come out faster, it’s still limited. To supply more supermarkets, it’s probably not possible.”
He stood up, noticing fresh milk flowing steadily from a nearby pipe. The bucket was almost full.
He walked over, replaced the milk, tightened the lid on the previous bucket, and pushed it out to a small pickup truck.
“Gu Hong, let Qi Kai and Qu Fei watch over this here. You take it to our fixed spots and distribute the milk.”
Shang Zhisheng loaded the bucket of milk into the truck.
By morning, they had already filled twenty buckets of milk, and with this bucket, they had enough to supply two or three supermarkets.
Gu Hong got into the car and said: “I’ll first deliver to those supermarkets near the residential areas.”
Shang Zhisheng replied: “Yes, I already made arrangements yesterday. When they see the truck, someone will be there to receive the goods.”
Gu Hong nodded and quickly started the car, leaving.
Shang Zhisheng returned to the shop, quickly assessed the situation, and saw Tong Lan outside making pancakes and wontons, while Lin You was in the kitchen behind the curtain using the vacuum to suck up vegetables. Qi Kai and Qu Fei were each responsible for moving goods from the kitchen and attending to the customers buying vegetables, the order was mostly well-maintained.
He felt reassured and went back to Lin You, saying:
“I’m also in charge of the material coordination for the transportation line from the outer city to Ancheng, and it’s been a bit busier recently, so I won’t be coming over for a while. If there are any issues, just call me directly, or have Qi Kai or the others pass along any messages. If you encounter any difficulties, don’t carry it all alone. There’s always a solution for everything.”
Lin You replied: “Okay, don’t worry.”
After that, Shang Zhisheng drove away.
Lin You sat in the chair with a cushion provided by Tong Lan. The whole morning had passed with her constantly turning the industrial vacuum cleaner on and off, making vegetables and fruits fall from the freezer. Although her hands were still busy, it was much easier compared to moving everything manually from the freezer.
Outside, things were a bit chaotic at first.
Some people questioned why there were limits on purchases and falsely claimed they had a large family and needed to buy up all the vegetables in the baskets by driving a car.
This hoarding habit just wanted more and more, regardless of whether they could eat it all or not, just feeling secure with their stockpiles.
But although these vegetables appeared out of nowhere, it wasn’t easy for Lin You to harvest them either. The amount she could sell each day wasn’t very much, and just this fact made the restriction necessary.
To avoid explaining the situation one by one and wasting words, Qi Kai wrote the government-regulated purchase rules on a cardboard box with a marker and placed it at the center of the vegetable baskets. The cardboard had large black characters, clear and easy to read.
With this official vegetable supply point marked, the hoarders stopped their insistence.
The mass buying situation also ended.
Qi Kai and Qu Fei, following Shang Zhisheng’s instructions, placed the QR codes at noticeable spots in front of the vegetable stalls.
The citizens began to line up to buy, filling out their personal information forms online as per the QR code instructions.
This way, a family could buy a certain amount of vegetables based on the number of people, and after registering, the next time they came to buy, they couldn’t come too soon.
