Chapter 13: New Variants
“What are you standing there dumbfounded for? Hurry and tell Gao Lin and Su Yan to run!” Chu Xihen frowned as he shouted at Zhou Quan.
Coming back to his senses, Zhou Quan scrambled towards the tent where they were staying.
Seeing his condition, Chu Xihen doubted he could handle it and decided to follow.
Lou Su grabbed his wrist. “You already said there are Variants appearing, where are you running off to?”
“They saved me when we came out of the airport, I’m going to help them as a thank you,” Chu Xihen was clear about his debts and favors. He wouldn’t let those who bullied him off the hook, and he’d remember those who helped him.
Lou Su didn’t hesitate. “I’ll go with you.”
Bai Jinli, who hadn’t gone far, stepped forward and said, “Lou-ge, don’t waste your time going over there. The Variant is about to come out. I just ran into that person, and I saw him being devoured by a pile of blue bugs. This Variant is different from yesterday’s green-furred wolf!”
“Thanks for the warning. You guys leave quickly. If you can, catch up with that Ability user and warn him too,” Lou Su said, pulling Chu Xihen away without looking back.
Bai Jinli looked at Lou Su’s back with a complicated expression. At this moment, he understood Wan Ming and Han Chong’s feelings a little. That Chu Xihen was indeed an annoying existence, so bewitching that Lou Su was losing himself.
The sensible thing to do in this situation was to escape decisively. Lou Su was actually going to save another group of ordinary people for the sake of an ordinary person like Chu Xihen.
He needed to know that after the Variants appeared, ordinary people were equivalent to burdens. Lou Su’s decision would kill him!
However, Bai Jinli didn’t continue to dwell on it. Although Lou Su perfectly matched his criteria for a partner in every way, Lou Su was too sentimental. He didn’t like the way he sacrificed himself for Chu Xihen.
He looked at Lou Su’s tall back for a while, then withdrew his gaze and quickly ran towards the hillside.
It was at this moment that Lou Su’s tent collapsed with a bang, and five or six basketball-sized blue beetles crawled out from inside.
If someone were to drag the tent away at this time, they would see the corpses of two blue beetles still pressed underneath.
Those were the ones that had suddenly emerged from the ground while he was lying in the tent, listening to Lou Su defend him, wanting to sneak attack him, but he had killed each with a single punch.
Pulled along by Lou Su, Chu Xihen’s mind was full of questions.
Why was Lou Su still entangled with him, a cannon fodder character, instead of going to the male lead’s side now that he had met Bai Jinli?
Could it be that because he hadn’t died when he was supposed to, the novel’s plot had collapsed?
When they ran back to the tent, Su Yan had also heard the noise in front and, out of vigilance, helped the injured Gao Lin out of the tent.
“What happened?” Su Yan immediately asked when she saw Chu Xihen and the others.
As she spoke, she inadvertently glanced at Lou Su, who was pulling Chu Xihen, and was stunned by his appearance.
“There are Variants, let’s go to the hillside to join the Ability users…” Zhou Quan ran all the way over, panting heavily. Before he could finish speaking, he heard a rustling sound behind him.
He slowly turned his head and saw a large group of blue beetles crawling towards them.
“Oh my god!” Zhou Quan’s scalp tingled. He didn’t want to say anything anymore, and after a few steps, he supported Gao Lin with Su Yan on either side, running in the opposite direction.
Zhuang Shi and Xiao Xi also heard Zhou Quan’s screaming and came out of the tent. Seeing the beetles crawling towards them, they didn’t even have time to go back into the tent to pack their things, and ran for their lives.
“You run with them, I’ll cover the rear,” Lou Su released Chu Xihen, pushed him on the back, so that he could catch up with Zhou Quan and the others.
Then, he took out the pistol from his waist and shot at the beetles not far away, one shot per beetle, hitting them very accurately.
He found that he had not only awakened a special type of Ability, but his eyesight also seemed to have evolved, allowing him to shoot accurately without having to aim specifically.
After watching for a while, Chu Xihen felt that Lou Su was completely capable of handling it, so he didn’t care anymore and went to help Zhou Quan and the others take care of Gao Lin.
Because the beetles had emerged from the lower part of the camp, they ran towards this side, separating from the main force of Ability users again.
Lou Su shot down more than a dozen beetles alone, slowing their speed, and quickly caught up with Chu Xihen and the others.
“Run towards the river, these bugs shouldn’t dare to go there,” Lou Su said to Chu Xihen.
That was exactly what Chu Xihen had in mind.
Zhou Quan was completely panicked, and they could tell him to do anything.
Although Gao Lin had many ideas, he was now a patient who couldn’t even run on his own, and had no right to speak.
Only Zhuang Shi disagreed with this decision.
“I heard there are monsters in the river, wouldn’t we be caught in a pincer attack if we go there?” He didn’t want to go, but he didn’t dare to leave this small team.
He regretted being intimate with Xiao Xi in the tent and coming out late. Otherwise, they could have retreated with the main force instead of fleeing with these few good-for-nothings again.
“You don’t have to go,” Zhou Quan, exhausted, couldn’t help but retort to Zhuang Shi.
Zhuang Shi was about to explode when Xiao Xi pulled him back. “As long as we don’t get too close to the river, it’s okay. We’ll leave after these Variants are gone.”
They ran ahead, and the beetles chased behind. When they were only a meter or two away from the riverbank, and the sound of the water was already very clear, the beetles stopped, circled in place for a long time, and then slowly retreated.
The group sat down on the ground, not only guarding against the beetles in front but also paying attention to whether anything would emerge from the water behind.
Fortunately, none of them were injured. If they didn’t have the smell of blood on them, the mutated fish in the water generally wouldn’t come out of the water to attack.
“I’m exhausted!” Zhou Quan leaned back, supporting himself with his hands. If he wasn’t afraid of encountering danger and not being able to get up, he would have liked to lie down for a while.
“How come these Variants change every day? Wasn’t it a green-furred wolf yesterday? How did it turn into blue beetles today? Watermelon-sized beetles, I haven’t even seen them in my nightmares!” Zhou Quan’s mouth really couldn’t stay idle.
“Then your nightmares tonight will be full of them,” Gao Lin said weakly to Zhou Quan, his face pale.
Su Yan also said, “Yesterday the wolves came from the sky, today the bugs came from the ground, what will appear tomorrow? How many surprises are there in this world that we don’t know?”
Chu Xihen leaned against Lou Su as if he had no bones, listening to Zhou Quan and the others without interrupting.
Not to mention their surprise, even he hadn’t expected that the apocalypse had only descended yesterday, and today blue Variants had appeared. The apocalypse was indeed coming with a posture to wipe out all of humanity.
“By the way, Chu Xihen, how did you know there would be Variants emerging from the ground in the tent just now? That Bai Jinli is said to have the Ability of precognition, did you also awaken this kind of Ability?” After Zhou Quan finished lamenting about the Variants, he began to expose his brother.
Lou Su also slightly turned his head to look at him.
He was in a hurry to run away just now, and he didn’t have time to ask.
Bai Jinli did have the ability of precognition. He had personally witnessed it several times yesterday, but before the Variants appeared just now, Chu Xihen had reminded them before Bai Jinli.
“I wish I did,” Chu Xihen replied indifferently.
The precognitive ability was a unique skill of the male lead, Bai Jinli, and no one else could have it.
He continued, “It’s just that a blind bug crawled into the tent and I covered it with a sleeping bag.”
Zhou Quan: “…Brother, you’re so brave!”
If it were him, and a Variant suddenly crawled out while he was sleeping in the tent, he would have fainted on the spot.
After listening, Lou Su frowned and asked Chu Xihen with lingering fear, “Then why didn’t you call me?”
