Chapter 24: The Suspicious Konjac Village
Chu Xihen had guessed that the [Paper Umbrella] must have some hidden function and wouldn’t be as useless as the card description suggested. However, he hadn’t had a chance to test it before being pulled into the instance.
But he hadn’t expected the [Paper Umbrella] to be able to block the scorching sun!
After exchanging basic information with Lingji, Chu Xihen thought the other party would finally quiet down for a while, but he didn’t expect him to steer the conversation back to the instance quest.
“Fox Bro, what do you think about the instance quest?” Chu Xihen didn’t reveal his name. Lingji called him that because he was wearing a fox mask.
Chu Xihen responded to the nickname with a roll of his eyes, “I look at it by looking up.”
Lingji: “…”
He paused for a moment, “I’m asking if you have any clues?”
“We haven’t even entered the village yet, what clues could we have?” Chu Xihen said.
Although he did have some, he was just too lazy to say.
“I’ve done some preliminary analysis, would you like to hear it?” Lingji could already sense Chu Xihen’s impatience.
“Don’t want to.” Chu Xihen refused directly.
Immediately stifling Lingji’s words.
“We’re meeting for the first time, isn’t being so direct a bit impolite?” Lingji suggested tactfully.
Chu Xihen retorted, “We’re meeting for the first time, isn’t talking so much even worse?”
“I suppose so.” Lingji nodded in agreement.
For the rest of the way, Lingji finally shut up and didn’t say anything, giving Chu Xihen a lot of peace.
When they arrived at the village entrance, they saw the two girls who had arrived earlier talking to an uncle who was returning home from work.
Behind the uncle stood a sign with three crookedly written characters: Konjac Village.
Seeing that the village name was related to the quest, Lingji couldn’t help but whisper to Chu Xihen, “They’re called Konjac Village, and our quest is to eliminate the poisonous konjac. Could it be that the konjac they’re growing has mutated?”
After all, they had come from the apocalypse, so it was normal for their thinking to be a bit ahead of the curve.
“Probably.” Chu Xihen said.
After they finished speaking, they walked forward and heard the uncle carrying a hoe say angrily, “There’s nothing fun in our village, go play somewhere else!”
“This uncle thinks we’re here for tourism.” Lingji whispered to Chu Xihen.
Chu Xihen didn’t say anything.
He Jia, who was in front, explained with a smile, “Uncle, please forgive us. We’re not here to play, we just got lost here. It’s getting dark, so please let us stay in the village for the night?”
Their quest was to help the villagers eliminate the poisonous konjac, but they didn’t have any information yet, so they definitely had to enter the village to investigate.
“No, our village doesn’t receive outsiders.” The uncle’s attitude was firm.
Lingji said to Chu Xihen again, “Based on the games I’ve played in the past, this NPC not letting us into the village probably means that we haven’t completed the prerequisite quest.”
“Could it be that we missed some clues by the river just now?” Lingji stroked his chin, frowning as he pondered.
Chu Xihen gave him a speechless look.
This uncle just didn’t want them to enter the village to die!
“How about we go back to the river to look for clues again?” Lingji said to the two girls in front.
Seeing that the uncle’s attitude was so firm, the two girls believed Lingji’s words and were about to turn around when several people came out of the village, led by an old man with white hair and a white beard.
“Erniu, what are you doing? Are you being disrespectful to the guests again?” The old man, with a sharp-mouthed and monkey-cheeked appearance, pushed the previous uncle, or Erniu as he called him, aside. Then, he greeted the group with a smile.
“Are you guests here for tourism? Please come in, please come in. The scenery in our Konjac Village is very beautiful, and there are even guesthouses for you to stay in.” Compared to Erniu, the village chief was excessively enthusiastic.
This made the two girls and Lingji feel uneasy.
“Should we go in?” He Jia turned around to ask Chu Xihen and Lingji for their opinions.
The village chief interjected, “Since you’re already here, of course you have to go in and take a look! Don’t hesitate, please come in!”
The other three didn’t dare to move, but Chu Xihen strode into the village. When he passed the village chief, he kindly “reminded” him, “We have a companion sleeping by the river. Please trouble the village chief to send someone to carry him back.”
“Sleeping?” The village chief immediately smiled, “Sleeping is good, I’ll send someone to carry him right away. You find a few people to go to the river with me, and you take the guests to the guesthouse to check in.”
“Do we have to pay to stay in the guesthouse? I don’t have any money, do you?” Lingji asked the others.
The two girls shook their heads. It was the apocalypse outside, who would carry money with them?
However, Lingji quickly realized, “Right, have you checked your personal stores? I guess the currency in the game should be points, not RMB.”
“We checked, but we don’t have any points right now.” He Jia was a little worried.
They had just entered the instance, and they would only get points after clearing the instance.
The villager leading the way turned around and replied to them, “Guests are guests, we don’t charge for accommodation.”
Yes, they don’t charge for accommodation, they only take lives, Chu Xihen replied in his heart.
Hearing the villager say that they didn’t charge money, the three people breathed a sigh of relief. Then, the talkative Lingji asked again, “Why are you called Konjac Village? Do you have a lot of konjac in your village?”
But they hadn’t seen any konjac on the roadside on their way in.
The villager was a little unhappy when he heard him ask this, “Why are you asking this? Our village doesn’t grow konjac.”
This was strange. Why would they be called Konjac Village if they didn’t have any konjac?
With this question in mind, the three clueless newbies and Chu Xihen were led to a guesthouse by the villager.
“This guesthouse looks pretty good!” He Jia said excitedly after the group looked around.
Especially after struggling in the apocalypse for a few days, seeing such good accommodation conditions made them almost cry.
The villager left after taking them there, saying that he would send them dinner later.
Chu Xihen took it easy, lying down on the sofa in the lobby.
Lingji felt his way to the entrance of the guesthouse and looked outside. After confirming that the villager was really gone, he returned to the house.
“It’s so strange, the houses in the village all look very old and dilapidated, but this guesthouse is so new, as if it was just renovated not long ago.” Lingji felt that this village was suspicious in every way.
“Yes, and the villager just now wouldn’t let us ask about konjac. Our quest is to help them eliminate the poisonous konjac!” He Jia continued Lingji’s words.
After that, Meng Jiayi also joined the discussion. The three of them talked for a long time before realizing that there was a teammate who had been paddling on the side the whole time. They all looked towards Chu Xihen, only to see his eyes closed under the mask, and he was clearly already asleep.
“He doesn’t really think he’s here for tourism, does he?” Lingji’s face was full of disbelief.
He Jia then raised another question, “Didn’t Mask Bro ask the village chief to carry that perverted guy back? Why hasn’t he been brought here yet after so long?”
