The Capitalist Heiress Got Swapped in a Marriage Deal—and Totally Won Chapter 6

Chapter 6 – Leaving Shanghai

“I never planned to leave you behind in my hometown. You’re my wife—of course, we should live together.”

Lu Fengnian’s military housing had already been allocated. Once they returned, they just needed to tidy up before moving in.

“That’s good to hear.”

“You take a rest first. I’ll go to the state-owned restaurant and bring back some food.”
Lu Fengnian didn’t have any friends in Shanghai, so there was no wedding banquet. For lunch today, he could only bring back takeout from the state-run restaurant.

“Okay, go ahead.”

As soon as he was out of earshot, Liu Shuning quickly called out to her system, “System, system! I got married today—do I get a grand wedding gift pack?”

【Please sign in first. The gift pack will be distributed together with the sign-in rewards.】

“Alright then, sign me in.”

【Sign-in successful. Host has received: one bicycle, one sewing machine, one radio, a pair of Plum Blossom-brand watches, ten gold bars, two 10-jin quilts, two 8-jin quilts, two 6-jin quilts, two air-conditioned comforters, ten sets of pure cotton bedding, ten wool coats, ten pairs of leather shoes, one hundred pairs of pure cotton socks, ten insulated water bottles, ten military-style mugs, ten enamel mugs, ten enamel plates, ten tableware sets, ten iron pots, ten bottles of Maotai liquor, ten jin of White Rabbit milk candy, ten jin of fruit candy, ten jin of beef, ten jin of pork, ten jin of lamb, one whole watermelon, and ten jin of sugar mandarins.】

“System, are you helping me prepare my dowry? That’s so thoughtful—you even included quilts and clothes!”

Liu Shuning was overjoyed, her heart sweet as honey, her face beaming with a radiant smile.

【These are rewards from the main system. Lu Fengnian is a man of great virtue. As long as you live, he won’t be labeled as someone who brings misfortune to his wife.】

“System, in the original novel world, didn’t Lu Fengnian live a good life?”

【If you hadn’t arrived, Liu Shuning would have already died. Lu Fengnian would have been known as someone whose fiancée died before marriage. Good women wouldn’t dare marry him. A few years later, when he returned home to visit, he happened to save a girl who jumped into the river. Due to gossip, he had no choice but to marry her.】

“Well, that doesn’t sound too bad? Or was there something wrong with that girl?”

【She was already pregnant. She married Lu Fengnian just to find a father for her child. She also took money from others to plant a banned book in Lu Fengnian’s study. He was later reported for possessing banned materials. Even though his superiors tried to protect him, he was still demoted.】

“That’s so tragic!”
In the novel, Lu Fengnian wasn’t mentioned much, so she had assumed he ended up well.

Just then, footsteps sounded outside—Lu Fengnian was back.
“Shuning, I brought some braised pork, stir-fried vegetables, and rice.”
Lu Fengnian smiled as he placed the food on the table.

Liu Shuning looked at the dishes, then at the supplies in her space, and made a mental note:
When she had the chance, she must use the good stuff in her space to improve Lu Fengnian’s quality of life.

The two of them sat at the table and began to eat.
The state-owned restaurant’s chef had good skills—the braised pork was tender and juicy without being greasy.

After the meal, Liu Shuning started packing while Lu Fengnian headed to the train station to buy tickets.

Lu Fengnian didn’t have much leave left—they had to head back to the Northeast tomorrow.

The Liu family had sent Liu Shuning off with a dowry of one thousand yuan, six thick quilts, eight sets of new clothes, and two sets of outdated gold jewelry.

The quilts were thick and heavy, piled high on the small hotel bed.

They took up too much space, so Liu Shuning planned to move them to the post office and ship them.

The journey from Shanghai to the Northeast was long and inconvenient with too many belongings.

As for the furniture and cookware Wu Shi had sent over yesterday—they were left behind in Tingxue Pavilion.

Wu Shi had always disliked the concubines’ daughters. The furniture she provided for the dowry were all outdated, discarded pieces from the main household.

Not only were they old-fashioned—some were even missing legs or arms.

Other than being used for firewood, they were practically useless.

Liu Shuning planned to go back to the Liu residence that evening and store some large, unmovable items into her spatial storage.

She also wondered if Liu Zhixiong had discovered yet that the gold and money in his study had mysteriously turned into sweet potatoes and potatoes. Hopefully, it wouldn’t delay their departure from Shanghai.

At midnight, Liu Shuning quietly pushed open the hotel room door and slipped out.

Lu Fengnian, staying in the room next door, did hear the door open—but when he checked the hallway, there was no one.

“That’s strange… I could’ve sworn I heard the door next door… Maybe I imagined it.”

Tonight should’ve been their wedding night. But since it was their first meeting, they had decided to sleep separately.
(Mainly because Liu Shuning wasn’t used to sleeping next to a stranger, so she kicked Lu Fengnian out and made him book another room.)

With that sofa and bed, she could now rest inside her space whenever no one was around.

Liu Shuning continued immersively collecting everything—furniture, old clothes—anything potentially useful, she stored it all into her system space.

Even the flowers and trees in the courtyard were transferred into her farm space. She practically wanted to strip the Liu residence bare.

There wasn’t much in Liu Yuchen and Liu Shuyu’s courtyards, just the usual furniture and discarded old clothes.

Fourth Concubine and her two sons had even less. Before leaving, they had already sent whatever they didn’t want back to her maiden home.

Liu Zhixiong’s residence, Qingfeng Courtyard, was the largest in the Liu estate. Apart from the main rooms, the east and west wings had been converted into sunrooms.

The main courtyard had three rooms: one study, one bedroom, and one private treasury.

The study’s four walls were lined with bookshelves, filled with books, mostly family heirlooms passed down through the Liu lineage.

Most of the valuable items in the treasury had already been sold, leaving behind just some unremarkable inkstones, brushes, and paper.

The furnishings hadn’t been moved much—he only took the clothes he frequently wore.

Liu Shuning, like a little hoarder hamster, scoured Qingfeng Courtyard gathering everything.

In the study, she didn’t spare a thing—books, shelves, half-used ink and paper, writing desk, and chairs—all were collected into the farm space.

In the bedroom: bed, tables, chairs, quilts, old clothes—swept up entirely.

The sunrooms’ flowers and plants, gardening tools, pruning shears—even the glass panels—were all dismantled and taken.

Some things she might not use herself, but they’d make great gifts!

At around 3 AM, Liu Shuning finally climbed over the wall and left the Liu residence. Her invisibility ability had worn off, so she was extra cautious on the way back. Luckily, she didn’t run into anyone. By the time she returned to the hotel, the night watchman was still sound asleep.

The next morning, Lu Fengnian arrived early with breakfast and knocked on the door. Just as he was about to kick the door open, Liu Shuning finally opened it, rubbing her eyes.

“You’re up so early? I haven’t even woken up yet!”

“Uh… it’s already past 8 AM. Didn’t you sleep well last night?”

“I’m just not used to sleeping in hotels. Isn’t our train tonight? Why are you up so early?”

“Did you forget? We have to register our marriage today, and transfer your household registration.”

“Oh right! I totally forgot. Give me a second—I’ll change and we can go.”

She had really forgotten about the registration. She was so focused on sneaking back into her room last night, she hadn’t listened to a word Lu Fengnian said.

Closing the door, she quickly opened the dowry trunk. Her ID papers and the thousand yuan stashed at the bottom were kept together—she hadn’t even checked them yesterday.

Huh? Why does the father listed on the ID say Liu Xiang instead of Liu Zhixiong? Liu Xiang… isn’t that the butler? How did I become his daughter?

Well, this works out nicely. She’d been worried that her capitalist heiress identity would negatively affect Lu Fengnian. Now that she was listed as the butler’s daughter, she no longer had to fear political scrutiny.

After tidying up and changing clothes, Liu Shuning followed Lu Fengnian to the public security bureau.

As soon as the officer saw Lu Fengnian’s marriage registration form, his attitude immediately turned enthusiastic.

After processing their marriage certificate, he even volunteered to help transfer Liu Shuning’s household registration.

“Give me the marriage certificate—I’ll keep it safe.” As soon as they stepped out of the office, Lu Fengnian asked for the certificate.

“Sure.” Liu Shuning handed it over without even looking. She didn’t have much use for it anyway, so it didn’t matter who kept it.

Lu Fengnian carefully tucked both marriage certificates into the inner pocket of his coat. “It’s still early. Want to go for a stroll?”

“No thanks. I don’t need anything.” Right now, all Liu Shuning wanted was a bed. She hadn’t slept at all the night before and could barely keep her eyes open.

“I’ll take you back, then.”

After sending her back to the hotel, Lu Fengnian left again.

Outside, he flagged a cab and headed to a nearby department store. Their wedding had been too rushed, and he hadn’t had time to buy her anything.

Shanghai was the most resource-rich city in the country. He could buy lots of things there that the northeast didn’t have.

He picked out a Plum Blossom-brand wristwatch for Liu Shuning from the watch section, then bought two jars of snow cream from the toiletries department.

He’d heard that city girls loved snow cream—though he didn’t know if Liu Shuning liked it.

By 4 PM, the couple boarded a vehicle with several large bags and headed for the train station.

“How did you think of getting me a watch?” Before leaving, Liu Shuning had received the watch and snow cream as gifts from Lu Fengnian.

She hadn’t expected him to think of buying her gifts—and honestly, it made her really happy.

“Our wedding was too rushed. I didn’t get the chance to buy you anything. A bicycle and sewing machine are big-ticket items—we’ll get them once we’re back in the northeast.”

“No need to buy a sewing machine—I don’t know how to sew clothes. Just a bicycle is fine. If you can get a radio ticket, we can buy one of those too.”

Currently, the popular status symbols were three rounds and one sound (bicycle, sewing machine, wristwatch, and radio). Liu Shuning had all of them in her space—more than one of each, in fact.

But if Lu Fengnian wanted to buy them for her, why not? Now that they were married, she should have what other people had too.

“Alright, I’ll trade for a radio when we get back.”

From Shanghai to the northeast, they had to transfer trains in Beijing. Because they left in such a hurry, Lu Fengnian hadn’t managed to get sleeper tickets—they had to endure two days in a regular seated car.

As soon as they boarded, Liu Shuning found her seat and closed her eyes to sleep.

Trains of that era were slow and full of everything—even chickens, ducks, and geese.
And with the packed crowds, even with the windows open, the smell was terrible.

Liu Shuning had to pretend to be asleep the whole time—she was worried she might actually throw up.

Seeing how uncomfortable she was, Lu Fengnian’s heart ached. Several times he approached the train attendants to see if they could upgrade to sleeper berths.

Unfortunately, the sleeper cabins were all full. There was nothing the attendants could do.

Three days later, the train finally arrived in Beijing.
Their train to Heilongjiang wouldn’t depart until the next morning, so they had to stay the night in the capital.

The next day, Lu Fengnian and Liu Shuning boarded the train to the northeast.

This time, Lu Fengnian was smarter. The night before, he had called a comrade stationed in Beijing and asked him to help secure two hard sleeper tickets.
