Chapter 16: You Got Familiar with Classmate Jiang Pretty Quickly
Su Tian thought she had drooled in her sleep and, embarrassed, reached up to wipe her mouth. Zhou Ying promptly took out a small makeup mirror from her pocket and held it up to Su Tian’s face.
Su Tian stared at her reflection for three seconds.
Surrounded by people, she swallowed her scream. However, anyone could see that her emotions were far from stable.
Wei Sicheng comforted her, saying, “It’s okay, it looks cute. If you feel embarrassed, I can draw a circle on my face too.”
Only then did Su Tian realize Wei Sicheng was also there.
She paused, picked up the small mirror to wipe the black marks off her face, and asked him, “Why are you here? Didn’t you say you were going to another school for an exchange? Is it over already?”
The pen marks were hard to remove; even after rubbing her face red, Su Tian couldn’t get them off.
“Not yet. I came back to school to get something. On the way, I passed a milk tea shop and brought you your favorite hot milk tea with ice, pudding and red beans boba,” Wei Sicheng pointed to the windowsill.
Su Tian believed him and responded with an “Oh.”
Jiang Chiyu suddenly glanced at her.
Noticing this from the corner of her eye, Su Tian was silent for a moment. She then said to Wei Sicheng, “You don’t have to list everything every time; it makes me seem like I eat a lot.”
Wei Sicheng smiled, “It’s just some toppings.”
Jiang Chiyu sneered, “Are you drinking eight-treasure porridge?”
The two spoke almost simultaneously.
Su Tian slowed her hand wiping her face: “…”
For some reason, she felt uncomfortable all over in this atmosphere. Was it because there were too many people?
Beside them, Zhou Ying’s expression was very animated.
Ha, spectators never mind the excitement.
Su Tian first replied to Wei Sicheng, “But it sounds like a lot.”
Then she put down the mirror, covered her ink-stained cheek, and glared at Jiang Chiyu, “None of your business!”
Wei Sicheng wanted to say something, but as he opened his mouth, Su Tian turned to Jiang Chiyu and retorted, “By the way! Why do I suddenly have pen marks on my face? I didn’t have a pen. Did you draw on my face while I was sleeping?”
Jiang Chiyu laughed sinisterly, “Su Tian, if you fall asleep again next class, I’ll kill you and end it right then and there.”
Wei Sicheng glanced at Jiang Chiyu and said, “It wasn’t him; don’t blame others. I took the black pen from your hand when I arrived.”
Su Tian responded with an “Oh,” and Jiang Chiyu gave Wei Sicheng a faint look.
Wei Sicheng continued, “You should go to the restroom and wash it off with water; wiping like this won’t work.”
Zhou Ying added, “Bring snacks and milk tea. After washing up, we’ll go to the playground to eat.”
“Oh, okay.” Su Tian said, taking out snacks from her desk and retrieving her wallet from her bag.
“Why are you taking money? Are you buying something?” Zhou Ying asked.
“No.” Su Tian counted the money, took out fifteen yuan, and handed it to Wei Sicheng, “Here, for the milk tea.”
Wei Sicheng pushed her hand back and pretended to scold her, “Why are you giving me money? Friendships are ruined by such things. If you feel bad, treat me next time.”
Su Tian thought for a moment, “Okay.” She put the money away, covered one cheek with a tissue, and looked at Jiang Chiyu, “Classmate Jiang, let me pass.”
Jiang Chiyu moved his chair forward slowly.
The three chatted away and quickly disappeared around the corner.
Suddenly, it became quiet beside Jiang Chiyu.
The noise seemed to vanish into the distance.
Everything was constantly changing every second, including people.
He lowered his head, gave a self-mocking smile, and then stood up and left.
…
Su Tian and her group sat under the shade on the playground.
She asked Wei Sicheng, “Don’t you need to go back?”
Wei Sicheng shook his head, “No rush, I want to watch them play basketball for a while.”
Su Tian responded with an “Oh,” believing him again.
She and Zhou Ying began unwrapping snacks to eat. Zhou Ying, grateful for the treat, initiated conversation with Wei Sicheng, “Which school did you go to for the exchange?”
“Just the neighboring city, Yutan No. 3 High School.”
“Yutan? I remember it’s quite impressive. They often achieve excellent results in provincial leagues.”
Su Tian nodded along. Even though she wasn’t interested in basketball, she knew about Yutan No. 3 High School, indicating its significant reputation.
Wei Sicheng, wanting to highlight himself, continued, “Their actual strength is just so-so, not as good as the hype. As long as a team isn’t in the bottom three of the provincial league, every school will claim they achieved some great result. Besides, their school is willing to spend money—they rely on that to recruit talent.”
Zhou Ying took the chance to ask, “Is there another league this year? Where’s it being held?”
Wei Sicheng replied, “They just drew the locations yesterday—it’s at our school.”
“Wow, that’s awesome! That means we get class cancellations again!” Zhou Ying slapped her thigh in excitement, then turned to Su Tian, who was focused on eating snacks and sipping milk tea. “Hey, Tian Tian, let’s go cheer for Wei Sicheng at the league!”
“Huh?” Su Tian was caught off guard. She had zoned out for a moment and hadn’t been following the conversation. Without thinking, she absentmindedly agreed, “Oh.”
Wei Sicheng gave Zhou Ying a grateful look and added, “Alright, I’ll have someone save you two front-row seats. I’ll also cover all your snacks and milk tea for the game.”
“Thanks, Brother Wei!” Zhou Ying said with a grin.
Su Tian also played along, “Thanks, Brother Wei!”
A gentle breeze drifted by, making the moment feel leisurely and pleasant. They continued chatting about random topics. After a while, Wei Sicheng casually asked a question he had been thinking about, as if it had just crossed his mind. “Oh right, Zhou Ying, why did you change seats?”
Zhou Ying knew what he really wanted to ask. She slowed down her motion of eating chips and answered vaguely, “Old Gao switched us. The two of us did really badly this time.”
“Oh, yeah, I saw your scores—you both dropped quite a bit. But still way better than mine, haha!” Wei Sicheng, being a special admission student for his athletic talent, didn’t have to worry much about grades. He tossed a chip into his mouth and crunched down. “But that guy—Su Tian’s new deskmate—I don’t think I’ve ever seen him in your class before.”
Su Tian replied, “He just transferred here.”
“Did your homeroom teacher assign him that seat?”
“Yeah.”
“Your homeroom teacher must think highly of him. New students usually sit in the back, don’t they?”
Su Tian thought about it and repeated what she had heard from others. “Overseas returnee, top student, a combination of good looks and talent.”
Then she added her own opinion. “Looks all polished and impressive, but in reality, he’s a pretentious, unpredictable, rude, and utterly annoying pervert.”
Zhou Ying was stunned. “What the hell did you go through to have such a low opinion of him?”
Too much.
But with Wei Sicheng present, Su Tian didn’t elaborate and just shook her head.
The hostility on Su Tian’s face didn’t seem fake. Wei Sicheng felt somewhat reassured but thought it would be better to ask Zhou Ying in private for more details.
They shared their snacks with Wei Sicheng, and before long, more than half of it was gone. The two girls tidied up the wrappers while Wei Sicheng went to throw the trash away.
As soon as he left, Zhou Ying leaned in and asked, “You and Jiang Chiyu got familiar with each other real fast, huh?”
