Chapter 35: You’re Just… Too Cute

Silence.

More silence.

Jiang Chiyu had never felt the world so quiet before.

“Hehe, this young man is quite self-…” The taxi driver, who had overheard their conversation, glanced in the rearview mirror and paused. “…quite self-aware.”

The man and woman in the back remained wordlessly looking at each other. The driver, sensing the awkward atmosphere, fell quiet.

“No phone?” Su Tian asked, emphasizing each word.

“Oh.” Jiang Chiyu recovered his composure quickly, though his response seemed dismissive. “I forgot. I thought I didn’t bring it.”

Su Tian couldn’t believe how stubborn he was, willing to go an entire afternoon without taking out his phone just to prevent her from seeing some photos. He only slipped up at the end when they were heading back.

Su Tian gave him a thumbs up. “Impressive!”

Jiang Chiyu shamelessly nodded slightly, “Not bad, though I slipped up at the end. Got careless.”

Seeing how much effort he put into hiding a single photo, Su Tian didn’t know what to say, so she repeated, “Impressive!”

After a pause, still bewildered by his behavior, she added, “You… I really want to sell you off.”

“That won’t work,” Jiang Chiyu drawled, lowering his gaze and somehow managing to appear wronged. “You can’t just claim me as yours just because my house is next to yours.”

Su Tian was baffled. “When did I ever claim you as mine?”

“If I’m not yours, what right do you have to sell me?”

Su Tian: “…”

Despite the turbulent waves in her heart, her face remained expressionless. “Jiang Chiyu, is this how British people chat?”

Or is it just you, the only one whose mouth is never serious?

“How so?” Jiang Chiyu recalled her previous assessment of him and raised an eyebrow. “Scumbag?”

This time, Su Tian gave a new evaluation – “Sappy.”

If anyone else said these things, people would likely find it greasy and off-putting. But coming out of Jiang Chiyu’s mouth, it was damn… flirty.

Even knowing his intention wasn’t really to flirt, but rather it stemmed from his inherently mischievous personality that enjoyed teasing her, Su Tian still found herself going numb in the ears from his brazen remarks that popped up every few days.

She felt she couldn’t always bear it.

Jiang Chiyu smiled, seemingly recalling something.

“The Brits are mostly eccentric, conservative, aloof, with emotions not easily revealed.”

Su Tian: “Then after spending five years there, how did you evolve into this?”

Jiang Chiyu actually reflected seriously for a moment, licking the tip of a sharp tooth. Finally, he said thoughtfully, “Maybe from holding back.”

Indeed.

Makes sense.

Su Tian had no rebuttal.

As they spoke, they arrived at their destination. Su Tian didn’t have change, so she paid with her phone. As she got out of the car, she suddenly remembered that Jiang Chiyu must have used his phone to pay for the octopus balls he bought her that afternoon.

He even said the vendor gave him an extra serving for free because he was good-looking.

She truly believed him.

In an instant, Su Tian felt like a fool.

Damn it!

Su Tian glared fiercely at the boy who lazily got out of the car and stood on the sidewalk waiting for her.

She felt a bit indignant for a moment, thinking why the hell was she opening doors, paying fares, and still about to treat this jerk to dinner.

So after the driver took off, she angrily stood in front of Jiang Chiyu. Feeling she was too low, she also stepped onto the sidewalk, then took out her phone. “Pay up! Let’s split the fare!”

Jiang Chiyu raised an eyebrow. “How should I pay you?”

“Cash.” Su Tian remembered he only had pounds. “Or transfer is fine!”

She proactively opened her WeChat QR code, as if afraid he wouldn’t know how to use his phone. “First scan to add me, then transfer.”

Jiang Chiyu looked at her, a smile gradually spreading in his eyes. “You really are…”

Just too cute.

He didn’t finish. Su Tian figured he wouldn’t say anything nice anyway, so she didn’t press further and urged him, “Hurry up, hurry up!”

“Alright.” Jiang Chiyu agreed very quickly. After a light “beep,” Su Tian received his friend request.

Ah Yu requests to add you as a friend.

Ah Yu – Ah Yu.

Su Tian’s thoughts gradually wandered. “Do your friends in England also call you Ah Yu?”

Jiang Chiyu nodded. “Mhm.”

“Why not have an English name? Don’t people usually pick an English name too?”

“I do.” Jiang Chiyu only replied with these two words, not continuing.

Seeing he seemed reluctant to say, Su Tian grew even more curious. Could it be because his English name doesn’t sound good?

Then she definitely had to know!

Su Tian probed, “Fish?”

Yu means fish, right?

Jiang Chiyu’s brows raised slightly, but he didn’t refute it. “Then wouldn’t you be called Uncle?”

Su Tian: “Dad works too!”

Jiang Chiyu rewarded her with a look that seemed to be smiling yet not.

Su Tian tapped “accept” on the screen with one hand. Recalling that Jiang Chiyu didn’t object earlier, wouldn’t that indicate her guess was more or less correct? So she tried again one by one, “Water? Late?”[1]Her guess of “Water” seems to be a random word that sounds somewhat similar to “Yu”. “Rain.” He said softly.

Rain… as in the sound of rain.

Su Tian paused for a moment.

Then realized this was his English name.

Just then, her phone vibrated. Su Tian’s thoughts were pulled back as she saw Ah Yu had sent her a red envelope.

She opened it. 25 yuan.

She was stunned for a bit. “The total was 25 yuan, so splitting it you should give me 12.”

“Round trip.” Jiang Chiyu smiled and emphasized each word, “Remember, roundtrip.”

Round trip was indeed 25 yuan, no problem.

Su Tian looked at the 25.00 on the screen and felt maybe she was overthinking it.

Still, a new curiosity arose.

Jiang Chiyu put away his phone, one hand in his pocket, standing there languidly. “Alright, can you tell me where we’re going now?”

Bringing this up, Su Tian got excited again.

“Treating you to wonton soup!”

“Closed today for personal matters.”

Su Tian stood dumbfounded before the tightly shut rolling door.

Jiang Chiyu squatted down beside her, silently stifling a laugh.

This was a remote snack alley with only five or six restaurants operating in the small lane. It was mealtime, yet these few shops remained cold and desolate with few patrons.

They stood in front of “Old Wang’s Wonton” at the very end. This shop was already locked up.

Seeing her a bit dejected, Jiang Chiyu laughed to himself for a while before stopping. “Why the sudden urge to treat me to a meal?”

“A meeting gift.” Su Tian lowered her head, her voice muffled. “I had a meeting gift but you didn’t.”

Jiang Chiyu didn’t expect it was because of this. He froze for a moment.

That was… so long ago.

Jiang Chiyu curled his lips in a joking smile. “I’m not a kid. What meeting gift do I need?”

Su Tian looked up at him. “Nonsense, we’re clearly the same age.”

Yet Jiang Chiyu was a whole head taller than her.

Su Tian glanced at her toes again. “Okay, maybe we don’t look it.”

Jiang Chiyu laughed. “Why fret over this? We had just moved in, so giving a gift to the neighbor girl as a guest is expected, no? Besides, that dinner that night was hosted by your family.”

Su Tian still had her head down, her voice a bit indistinct. “…Also to thank you for teaching me how to do the homework problems.”

Jiang Chiyu heard clearly but huffed in annoyance. “I teach you how to do homework and you treat me to wonton soup once?”

Su Tian thought he was being disdainful and was about to explain. But before she could speak, Jiang Chiyu glanced at the Old Wang’s Wonton sign, eyes gleaming mischievously. “Shouldn’t you be treating me three or four times a month?”

1 Her guess of “Water” seems to be a random word that sounds somewhat similar to “Yu”. There’s no direct connection between the meaning of “Yu” (予) and “water”.

As for “Late”, this guess likely comes from the similarity in pronunciation between “Late” and “Chi” (遲) from Jiang Chiyu’s name. In Mandarin Chinese, “Chi” is pronounced quite similarly to the English word “late”, just with a different tone.

The character “Chi” (遲) in Jiang Chiyu’s name means late, delayed, or slow. It’s a relatively common character used in Chinese names.
