Chapter 12: I’ll Always Be There for You
Yi Yun looked at the beautiful and lovely young woman, then at the two families arguing furiously, her expression becoming increasingly confused.
“You’re not my third son’s wife? You’re my granddaughter?”
“Yes, I’m your second granddaughter, Gu Congshuang.”
Yi Yun didn’t answer, but tapped her temple, as if trying to remember.
Gu Congshuang looked at Ye Bei helplessly, “I’m sorry. I should have thanked you properly, but you ended up seeing all this family mess.”
“Will you still marry me?”
Ye Bei, who had silently observed everything, showed a rare tenderness on his usually stern face. He put his arm around Gu Congshuang’s shoulders, “You didn’t reject me, so why would I reject you? We’re a perfect match.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll always be there for you. Whatever you want to do, I’ll always support you! That’s my promise.”
Although Ye Bei’s way of speaking was straightforward, it was direct and clear.
For the first time, Gu Congshuang felt a sense of security and reassurance.
She felt a pang of guilt; her previous confession had been a lie, yet he was so considerate and thoughtful.
The warmth she had never felt at home was now changing because of Ye Bei?
Gu Qinhai hadn’t expected Gu Congshuang to take on this hot potato. A smile spread across his bald face, “Shuang’er is such a sensible girl. With Mom in your care, I’m relieved.”
Li Yuqin glared at Gu Congshuang, “Gu Congshuang, what are you thinking? Taking care of an elderly person isn’t as easy as you think.”
“The first problem is where she’ll live.”
Gu Congshuang looked directly at Gu Qinhai, “The ancestral home is shared. We didn’t fight for it then, but now we must have a room. It’s Grandma’s room, and I won’t back down.”
Gu Qinhai was taken aback by her gaze. It was just one room, but with everyone watching, he couldn’t refuse.
This younger brother really had a formidable daughter.
“Of course, this room has always belonged to Mother. It’s spacious and luxuriously furnished,” Gu Qinhai said with a forced smile.
“Good. After I take Grandma to the hospital, we’ll go to the notary office to register this.”
Gu Qinhai hadn’t expected Gu Congshuang to think this far ahead. Now, he had to give up the room. It was fine; his family of six didn’t have the time or money to care for their mother.
Li Yuqin hadn’t expected to get a room either. Her anger subsided. She was getting married soon, and her mother-in-law would be going with her to the island.
A smile appeared on Li Yuqin’s face.
“Who wouldn’t say my daughter is the most filial in the area?” She completely forgot that she had called Gu Congshuang names just days ago.
The onlookers, expecting a fight, were disappointed. No one was in the mood to praise Gu Congshuang.
Ye Bei straightened his uniform, adopting a military bearing, and introduced himself, “Hello, Uncle and Aunt. I’m Ye Bei, Congshuang’s boyfriend.”
Li Yuqin, clutching her swollen face, looked up at the 1.8-meter-tall man.
She had been worried about her mother-in-law’s care and had forgotten that Ye Bei was the one who helped find her. She had been hiding in a corner and hadn’t seen him clearly.
Now, facing him in this chaotic scene, she felt both ashamed and proud.
She was ashamed of the family’s disgrace, but proud that even in this situation, Ye Bei wasn’t rejecting her, and they were getting married.
Chen Hehua looked at the man, her eyes welling up. Her daughter, Gu Congbing, had found a pig farmer—big, burly, and foul-mouthed.
She wanted to persuade them to break up, but Gu Congbing had already spent a lot of money on Liu Honghai, the pig farmer. If they broke up, getting the money back was one thing; she was afraid Liu Honghai would come to their house with a butcher knife.
Seeing Gu Congshuang’s boyfriend, she understood the difference. No wonder Gu Congshuang was so confident about supporting her grandmother.
She would have done the same.
Gu Congbing had watched silently, her eyes never leaving the man in the military cap. She was afraid he would dislike the family’s mess, but he was gentle and kind, his eyes only on Gu Congshuang.
She then thought of her boyfriend’s face.
Comparison is the thief of joy. She wasn’t bad-looking, but she had made such a poor choice in a partner.
It wasn’t fair. Resentment flashed in her eyes towards Gu Congshuang.
Gu Qinhai hadn’t expected the family drama to be interrupted by Ye Bei.
The tall and handsome man made him feel suffocated. He was the eldest son, always privileged, but now he had lost to his younger brother.
His son, Gu Congyu, had returned from Xinjiang, tanned and muscular. Gu Qinhai thought he was perfect.
But seeing Ye Bei’s rank insignia—a second lieutenant—and his youth, he was shocked.
He wished Ye Bei were his son, but he was his younger brother’s son-in-law.
Gu Qingshan saw the envy in Gu Qinhai’s eyes and the others’ envious glances, forgetting about the public humiliation.
He laughed heartily, “Xiaobei, thank you so much. Come home with me; let’s have a drink.”
He put his arm around Ye Bei’s shoulder, acting like old friends.
This made Gu Qinhai furious. He glanced at the dejected Gu Congbing and sighed, disappointed.
“Brother, won’t you stay and chat?” Gu Qinshan asked.
“No, there are things to do at home. Mom will stay with you. Take good care of her.”
Gu Qinhai’s last words were emphasized, showing his anger.
Gu Qinshan understood; if he didn’t take good care of her, he’d face more than just slaps.
But he was feeling triumphant and didn’t care.
Yi Yun, regaining some clarity, said, “You’re not my third son’s wife? Where is he?”
“Why doesn’t he come see me?”
