Chapter 19: Qin Kaishen Sees Bai Yalan in the Military Base: She Must Be Here for Me
Bai Yalan nodded seriously and promised sincerely, “Grandpa, don’t worry. Your granddaughter understands everything clearly and has thought things through.”
Old Master Bai lovingly patted his granddaughter’s head, both fond and gratified. “I know you’re sensible. I’m just a bit anxious, so I wanted to remind you again. You know, this jade bracelet of your grandmother’s was passed down from her great-grandmother. It’s been in the family for generations, but nothing miraculous ever happened—until now, with you. This might be a gift from heaven. Since destiny has chosen you, you’ll probably have your own responsibilities to shoulder in the future.”
Hearing this, Bai Yalan became solemn. Her second chance at life was already a blessing from the heavens.
And uncovering the secret of this bracelet—wasn’t that also a sign of divine favor?
“Yes, Grandpa, I promise I won’t let you down! Maybe it’s Grandma, watching over us from above.”
The old man’s eyes grew misty, emotions surging.
“Yes… Your grandma loved you the most when she was alive.”
Bai Yalan’s parents quickly stepped forward to comfort him. “Dad, Mom must want us all to live well and be happy. Don’t be sad.”
Bai Yalan quickly changed the topic, “Grandpa, let’s go outside and talk. By the way, you haven’t told me when I can take the military doctor qualification test. I need to start preparing in advance!”
The old man smacked his forehead. “Look at me! Getting old—I’ve got too much on my mind and almost forgot such an important matter!”
The family left the space and returned to the real world. Old Master Bai told his granddaughter that the military doctor exam would be in a week—a bit rushed.
But Bai Yalan had already started studying the moment she made her decision.
Having grown up with her grandfather, she was familiar with medical matters, especially surgery—the focus of military doctors. That’s where she directed her studies.
Thanks to her grandfather’s teaching from a young age, she had a solid foundation.
While not 100% confident, she had a fair amount of belief in herself.
Not to mention, she had been drinking spiritual spring water during this time, which showed noticeable effects.
Her memory had clearly improved—she could remember things after reading them just a few times. This was a pleasant surprise.
So she studied diligently, read medical materials, and received one-on-one guidance from her grandfather whenever possible.
In her spare time, she accompanied him on walks to help him relax.
Perhaps it was having his family nearby—or perhaps the spiritual spring water—but the old man’s spirits had improved significantly.
The night before the assessment, as usual, Bai Yalan helped her grandfather walk around the residential compound.
The two chatted while strolling.
“Xiao Lan,” the old man said, “don’t think your grandfather is nagging. I know you’re a determined girl who doesn’t easily change her mind once she’s made a decision. But I still want to remind you: being a doctor isn’t easy, especially a military doctor. Are you truly prepared for the challenges ahead? For the hardships to come?”
“Don’t worry, Grandpa. I’ve thought it all through. I’m your granddaughter, after all.”
The old man patted her hand, emotional. “Yes, you’re my Bai Miaoshou’s granddaughter. The medical skills of the Bai family will be passed down through you. Xiao Lan, this past week, you’ve accompanied me for walks and chats whenever you had time—I’ve been so happy. But if you ever feel bored, once the test is over, go out and enjoy yourself. Don’t feel like you always have to keep me company.”
Bai Yalan playfully pouted, “Grandpa, I find walking and chatting with you really relaxing. What—are you getting tired of me already?”
The old man burst out laughing, “How could I? I’m not even happy enough with all this time together!”
“Then stop saying things like that.” Bai Yalan feigned a haughty tone and leaned her head on his arm, feeling peaceful and content like never before.
Besides her parents, her grandfather was the one who loved her the most in this world.
In her past life, she hadn’t spent enough time with him. Now, with this new life, she could finally make up for that regret.
As the two were walking and chatting, a few young soldiers passed by.
Two of them were helping a comrade who seemed injured, while another led the way, saying, “Hang in there—we’re almost at the medical office. The doctor will take a look soon.”
The old man immediately picked up his pace and hurried over, asking, “Wait a moment—what happened?”
The leading soldier recognized the white-haired elder instantly—this was Dr. Bai, known as “Miaoshou” (Magic Hands) in the military camp. He saluted immediately.
“Sir! Dr. Bai, the new recruit got injured during training. We’re heading to the medical room.”
Without another word, Bai Miaoshou crouched down. “Let me take a look first.”
As he spoke, he rolled up the young soldier’s pant leg himself. Bai Yalan also quickly squatted down to help, revealing a swollen, twisted ankle—painful to look at.
The old man reached out and touched it. Before anyone could react, his hand made a lightning-fast move.
The young soldier yelped once—and then looked stunned. “Ah! …Huh? It doesn’t hurt anymore!”
The old doctor clapped the dust off his hands and stood up with a chuckle.
“All done. It’s just a sprain—no broken bones. Go to the medical office for some ointment. Rest for a few days, and don’t move too much until it fully heals before resuming training.”
He gave careful instructions. The young soldiers nodded earnestly, full of respect and gratitude.
“Yes, thank you, Dr. Bai!”
The old man simply waved it off. He’d treated countless cases in his career—this was just another routine incident.
But what he didn’t realize was how deeply his actions moved others.
Looking at the backs of the young soldiers walking away, Bai Yalan stared at her grandfather with admiration in her eyes.
If she’d ever doubted or hesitated before, those feelings were now completely gone.
From this moment on, it didn’t matter how successful she became.
What mattered first and foremost was becoming a good doctor like her grandfather—
Patient, careful, compassionate, and skilled.
Only after she achieved that could she talk about ambition or achievement.
The family spent a happy and lively week together.
On the morning of the exam, Old Master Bai personally took his granddaughter to the military medical department in a green military jeep.
As Bai Yalan did her final preparations, she couldn’t deny feeling nervous. But with her grandfather beside her, she forced herself to stay composed.
The old man personally straightened her uniform. Though his expression was serious, his voice remained warm and loving.
“Comrade Bai Yalan, you’re about to take your formal examination. Do you have confidence?”
Bai Yalan stood upright and replied cheekily, “Reporting, Sir! I do!”
“Good.” The old man smiled and patted her head. “You’re my granddaughter, Bai Miaoshou’s legacy. Make your grandpa proud!”
“Yes, I’ll complete the mission with excellence!”
While the two were talking, they didn’t know that just inside the nearby medical office, Qin Kaishen was also receiving instructions from a doctor.
“You’ve had injuries before and haven’t fully recovered. You’ll need to take extra care during training…”
He listened carefully and nodded. But when he stepped out, he heard a voice that made him pause.
Was that Bai Yalan? He chuckled to himself and shook his head.
Impossible—why would she be here?
But after just a few more steps, he caught sight of a familiar, delicate figure.
A white-haired elder stood facing away from him, talking to a young woman with fair skin and black hair.
Her eyes were bright, lips rosy, and she looked both lively and graceful.
The elder was instructing her seriously, and she responded with sweet, smiling words.
Qin Kaishen blinked hard and stepped closer to make sure.
It really was Bai Yalan!
She was actually here?
Qin Kaishen stared at her in shock. What was she doing here?
But after a moment, his heart filled with joy.
She must be here for him—definitely!
