Chapter 34: Why Is Brother Unhappy?
“Brother Qing’an, Brother Wenshu, Yu Yu knocked someone silly!” Yu Yu hurriedly ran in to find her two brothers.
“Quick, go find a doctor for the brother outside who got knocked silly!”
Qing’an and Wenshu burst into laughter.
“I’ll go take a look.”
Wenshu got up to check outside and found his friend sitting dazed on the ground.
“No way, he really got knocked silly?”
“You’re the one who’s silly.” Yan Chuan brushed off nonexistent dust from his clothes and stood up.
“Stop scaring the little princess. She’s still young and might take you seriously,” Wenshu thought his friend was pretending to be dazed to frighten Yu Yu.
“I wasn’t scaring her; I just remembered some things.”
“Hm? What things?”
“Things from when I was taking care of kids back in the day.”
Wenshu suddenly understood; Yan Chuan was reminiscing about old times.
“Looks like we can’t escape our fate of taking care of kids.”
As the prince’s daughter, they had to protect her as she grew up no matter what.
Qing’an came out holding Yu Yu and pointed at Yan Chuan. “See? He’s not silly.”
Only then did Yu Yu feel reassured.
“Brother Qing’an, where’s my bag?” It was time for Yu Yu to go to work.
Qing’an gestured for his friend to bring over the bag he had prepared for the princess.
Wenshu handed the bag to Yu Yu.
“Little princess, I put some candy, pastries, and fruit in there. If you get tired, you can eat,” Qing’an adjusted the bag on her back.
“Mm-hmm.” Yu Yu nodded.
The three of them stepped back.
Yan Chuan was still in a daze.
“Why does the little princess have to go to work?” Does the Regent Prince’s Mansion really need the little princess to work to support itself?
Qing’an briefly explained the little princess’s background to his friend.
Yan Chuan was flabbergasted. Really? That’s so amazing?
He was speechless for quite a while.
“Oh my goodness.” Yan Chuan exclaimed.
“Alright, hurry up and get to work.” Wenshu patted his friend on the shoulder.
“I’m taking a break today; I’m injured.” Yan Chuan pointed at the bump on his forehead.
Qing’an and Wenshu’s gazes focused back on the bump on his head.
“Ha ha ha.” They laughed loudly.
Fuming, Yan Chuan reached out to scratch them.
On the road to Sangdu, Lin Zhi was carefully taking care of the divine moon Flower in the carriage.
With this crucial medicinal ingredient, his father’s eyesight would be saved.
But it had to be frozen before the divine moon wilted, so they could refine the antidote once all the other ingredients were gathered.
“Yam, hurry up.”
“Yes.”
The autumn rain in Sangdu continued to fall lightly, and Jiang Gu tightened his cloak against the dreary weather.
His pale face showed no vitality, looking like a paper doll.
“Eldest Prince.” Yunming greeted him with a bow.
“What is it?”
“Here’s your medicine.” Yunming handed a wooden box to Jiang Gu.
“Good.” Jiang Gu accepted the box with a nod.
After completing the task assigned by Feng Xiaohan, Yunming left quietly.
The guard, Jing Si, approached.
“Sir, do you want to bring in the herb from your windowsill?”
Jiang Gu came back to his senses, remembering the herb Yu Yu had gifted him.
“You can go for now.”
“Yes.” Jing Si stepped back, thinking that given the recent damp cold, he should brew some ginger tea for the prince to ward off the chill.
Jiang Gu entered the room and brought in the pot of herb that had gotten drenched by the rain.
Fortunately, the rain wasn’t too heavy, and the herb branches hadn’t been broken.
Looking at the still vibrant herb, Jiang Gu thought of Yu Yu.
For some reason, he really wanted to see Yu Yu right now.
Perhaps it was the continuous rainy days that had worsened his condition; the torrential rain, flames, blood, and screams in his nightmares were driving him to madness.
He rolled up his sleeves and looked at the scars on his arms.
He truly felt he could barely hold on any longer; the desperate will to survive and the hope of life made him want to see Yu Yu.
Jiang Gu pulled out a sharp dagger and aimed it at his wrist. He wanted to take a gamble; if she came, he would endure the pain of living. If she didn’t, he would join his parents and sister in death.
“Yu Yu.” Jiang Gu called out to the system.
【Calling Yu Yu.】
Yu Yu, who was being coaxed by Brother Youqian, heard her brother’s call.
“Brother Youqian, I need to go see my brother now. I can’t talk anymore.”
“Yu Yu, where are you? We still haven’t finished our conversation!” Youqian shouted at Yu Yu’s retreating figure.
Yu Yu went to get her pre-ordered flowers from Wisteria.
Second by second, Jiang Gu waited, his grip on the dagger tightening.
Dark red blood seeped out, dripping onto the ground.
He was about to be liberated.
“Brother, Yu Yu is here!” Yu Yu appeared, holding a bouquet of pink lotus flowers.
Hearing Yu Yu’s voice pulled Jiang Gu back to reality, and he felt the pain in his wrist.
With a clang, the dagger fell to the ground, and Jiang Gu looked at Yu Yu as if waking from a dream.
Yu Yu stared wide-eyed at her brother’s bleeding hand, looking as if she were frightened.
Realizing he had scared her, Jiang Gu quickly covered the wound with a handkerchief.
“Brother, you’re bleeding.” Tears rolled down Yu Yu’s round cheeks.
“I’m fine.” Jiang Gu gently comforted Yu Yu.
Yu Yu threw down the flowers in her hands and frantically tried to find medicine for her brother.
“I’ll find medicine for you, Brother!”
“Yu Yu, open the box on the table; there’s medicine inside.” It was the one their father had sent earlier.
Yu Yu hurriedly opened the box.
Jiang Gu sprinkled some medicinal powder onto his wrist and wrapped it with gauze.
Fortunately, he hadn’t severed any tendons.
Yu Yu looked at her brother with red eyes.
“Brother, why did you hurt yourself?” Yu Yu couldn’t understand why her brother would hurt himself.
Having lost so much blood, he must be in pain.
“Brother… Brother was just too miserable, not happy,” Jiang Gu said, looking at the blood-soaked gauze.
He was just too pained and wanted to escape.
“Brother, have some candy.” Yu Yu pulled out some sweets for her brother.
“And some pastries. This feather is pretty, you can have this too.”
“Also, this pretty stone.”
Hearing that her brother was unhappy, Yu Yu rummaged through her bag, offering various items to cheer him up.
If her brother ate some candy, he might feel a little happier; seeing something beautiful should also make him feel better.
Jiang Gu watched as his sister desperately tried to find things to make him smile.
“Brother is really happy you came,” Jiang Gu said, using his uninjured hand to pat Yu Yu’s little head.
“Don’t cry; it was Brother who scared you.”
Yu Yu wiped her tears with her sleeve.
“Why is Brother unhappy?”
“Maybe it’s because Brother didn’t get to eat what he wanted today,” Jiang Gu smiled gently.
“What does Brother want to eat? Yu Yu will buy it for you.” If she bought it for him, then he would be happy.
“I want to eat amber candy.” He had loved the amber candy his mother made the most when he was young; it was sweet and sour and tasted wonderful.
After their mother made it, he and his sister would each take one and pack them in their bags.
“Yu Yu remembers, I’ll go buy it right now!” Yu Yu immediately ran off to the town to buy amber candy.
After asking around, she found none, so she returned to the Regent Prince’s Mansion.
“Father!” Yu Yu called out for her father.
Feng Xiaohan was still out handling matters and hadn’t returned yet. Qing’an heard the little princess’s voice and came over.
“Little princess, the prince is still out.”
“Brother Qing’an, I want amber candy.” Yu Yu looked at Qing’an with hopeful eyes.
“Alright, I’ll have someone buy it. Please wait a moment, little princess.”
Qing’an instructed someone to go buy amber candy.
While Yu Yu was out buying it, Jiang Gu picked up the lotus flowers Yu Yu had brought.
Several bright red lotus flowers bloomed splendidly, adorned with lush green leaves.
Jiang Gu arranged the flowers carefully.
He decided to keep living; at least while alive, he could enjoy the beautiful lotus flowers.
He had countless thoughts of escape, but as long as there was a hint of beauty, he still wanted to stay.
At the Regent Prince’s Mansion, the servants returned with the amber candy, and Qing’an packed it into a pouch for Yu Yu.
“Thank you, Brother Qing’an.”
Holding the amber candy, Yu Yu left happily.
