Chapter 35: Father, I Just Went to See Your Son!
Jiang Gu had just changed out of his blood-stained clothes when he heard Yu Yu’s cheerful voice calling for her brother.
“Brother, Yu Yu is back! Come eat!”
“Okay.”
Jiang Gu put on his outer coat and stepped outside.
Yu Yu handed her pouch to her brother.
Jiang Gu opened the pouch and took out a piece of amber candy, enjoying its sweet and sour flavor.
“Brother, are you feeling a bit happier now?” Yu Yu asked.
“Mm-hmm, I’m happy,” Jiang Gu replied, handing her a piece of candy.
Yu Yu happily munched on the candy while lying on her brother’s lap.
“Brother, if you want to eat something in the future, just tell Yu Yu, and I’ll buy it for you.”
“Yu Yu has lots and lots of money; don’t be unhappy, okay?”
“Alright.” Jiang Gu nodded.
He would strive to keep living.
Living was always braver and more resilient than dying.
“Where did you buy this candy?” Jiang Gu wondered, as the taste of the amber candy reminded him of the ones sold at the market.
“Brother Qing’an bought it,” Yu Yu replied.
“Qing’an?” Jiang Gu recognized the familiar name.
“Feng Wuyu… Feng Xiaohan is your what?”
“Father, of course! Brother, do you know my father?” Yu Yu looked at him expectantly.
Could it be that her brother also knew her father?
“I do know him.” Jiang Gu nodded, dazed.
So it turned out that she was truly his sister.
He had never thought of it before; Feng Wuyu was clearly a name chosen by his father.
“So brother is a friend of father’s?”
“Not a friend; I’m his adopted son.” Jiang Gu looked at Yu Yu.
Yu Yu blinked her big eyes in confusion: ??
“But brother, your surname is Jiang.” Father’s surname is Feng, and so is Yu Yu’s.
“I’m an adopted son,” Jiang Gu explained.
Yu Yu’s mind was in a whirl.
The relationship between her father and brother was so complicated!
Seeing the expression on his sister’s face, Jiang Gu realized she didn’t understand. He decided to explain what being an adopted father and son meant.
Yu Yu listened attentively, realizing how it was.
“Wow, that means Brother is still Yu Yu’s brother!” Yu Yu didn’t care about the complicated relationship between her brother and her father; all she knew was that her brother was still her brother.
Feng Xiaohan: Son, it’s not what you think!
“Right, I’m still your brother.” Jiang Gu patted Yu Yu’s little head.
Yu Yu glanced at the time; it was time to go home for dinner.
“Brother, are you coming home to eat with us?”
“No, Brother can’t go back often right now.” Jiang Gu squatted down to fix her bangs.
“Why not?” Yu Yu asked, puzzled. Why couldn’t her brother come home for dinner?
“Because there are bad people watching Brother; I have to pretend I don’t know you and Father, okay?” Jiang Gu quietly explained the current situation to his sister.
“When can Brother come back?”
“Brother will come back; just be good.” Jiang Gu helped her carry her bag.
“Okay.” Yu Yu obediently nodded her little head.
Then she returned to her father.
Feng Xiaohan was sitting at the table waiting for his daughter to eat; tonight’s dinner still had lotus root fritters.
“Father, I’m back from work!” Yu Yu appeared before Feng Xiaohan.
“Go wash your hands.”
“Okay!” Yu Yu dashed off to wash her hands, hanging her bag up.
Afterward, she sat down in her chair.
Feng Xiaohan first served her a bowl of chicken soup, then added a lotus root fritter, a meatball, and some greens.
He also peeled a few fresh, sweet shrimp.
“Father, I just went to see your son!” Yu Yu said to her father as she reached for a chicken leg.
Feng Xiaohan paused, his hands stilling. His son?
“What son?”
“Brother Jiang Gu!” Yu Yu took a bite of the lotus root fritter.
“You’re bound to him too?” Feng Xiaohan wasn’t too surprised.
He had already seen his daughter bound to Huo Rong before.
“Yes!” Yu Yu nodded vigorously.
“Father, Brother is unhappy because he didn’t get to eat amber candy, and he hurt himself.”
Feng Xiaohan picked up the chicken leg in Yu Yu’s bowl.
Yu Yu: !!! Father, how could he take her chicken leg?
Feng Xiaohan tore the chicken leg into strips for his daughter to eat.
Yu Yu looked at the chicken leg pieces in her bowl, and her heart swelled with joy.
Father really was an amazing dad.
“So you bought him amber candy,” Feng Xiaohan looked at his daughter.
“Yes! After Brother ate it, he became happy!” Yu Yu said, offering a large portion of chicken leg meat to her father.
“Father, eat quickly.”
“Alright.”
After finishing one lotus root fritter, Yu Yu wanted to eat a second one, but Feng Xiaohan wouldn’t let her.
“You can’t eat too much; it’s easy to get heaty.”
“Father, can’t I just have one more? Just the last one?” Yu Yu tugged at her father’s sleeve, acting cute.
“No.” Feng Xiaohan insisted he was a strict parent and wouldn’t spoil his child.
“Father, just one more bite, please?” Yu Yu pleaded softly, her voice sweet and endearing, like a clingy little kitten.
The strict Feng Xiaohan looked at his daughter.
“Alright, you can have one more bite, but that’s it.”
“Mm-hmm.”
In the end, Yu Yu got to eat another bite of the lotus root fritter.
After dinner, Feng Xiaohan let his daughter play in the bedroom, warning her not to go outside in the rain.
He then instructed the secret guards to attend to their tasks.
Yu Yu crawled into a box and covered it, giggling as she played hide-and-seek with her father.
After Feng Xiaohan finished giving instructions to the guards, he entered the bedroom and noticed there was no sound from his daughter.
When kids are quiet, they’re definitely up to something.
Feng Xiaohan saw the corner of a piece of clothing pressed down by the box and hurried to open it.
“Yu Yu!”
Yu Yu looked a bit dazed at her father.
“What’s wrong?” Feng Xiaohan anxiously looked at his daughter.
“I feel a bit dizzy here.” Yu Yu pointed to her little head.
“You can’t lock yourself in a box like that.”
“It’s very dangerous,” Feng Xiaohan said, feeling a surge of fear. If he had come in later, or hadn’t noticed her clothing being pressed down, she could have suffocated in the box.
“I understand now,” Yu Yu nodded her little head.
Feng Xiaohan looked at his daughter; from now on, someone must be watching over her.
“Be good and don’t scare your father like that.”
After a while, Feng Xiaohan looked at his daughter again.
“Do you still feel dizzy?”
“After eating a lotus root fritter, I won’t feel dizzy anymore.” Yu Yu looked at her father with anticipation.
“Can you eat again tomorrow?” Feng Xiaohan asked, negotiating with his daughter, putting all his patience into her.
“Then Yu Yu wants to eat milk cake; I’ll just have half a piece.” Yu Yu negotiated back with her father.
“Alright.” Feng Xiaohan nodded.
He then instructed Qing’an to bring a plate of milk cake.
“Now, recite a poem for your father,” Feng Xiaohan casually picked up a poetry collection for his daughter to read.
Yu Yu opened the poetry book and cleared her throat.
“Out in the frontier, the wind howls.”
“Father, did you write this?” Yu Yu looked at her father in surprise.
Feng Xiaohan pretended to glance at the poetry book.
“I must have picked the wrong one; these poems were compiled by some bored people. I just wrote them casually.”
“Read this one to Father.” Feng Xiaohan took another collection of ancient poems from the bookshelf.
Yu Yu focused as she flipped through her father’s poetry collection.
“Father, you’re amazing!”
Feng Xiaohan struggled to suppress his smile.
He really hadn’t meant to show his daughter his poems; it was truly an accident.
“Alright, alright, don’t look at that one anymore; read this one,” Feng Xiaohan pretended to snatch the poetry book from Yu Yu’s hands.
Yu Yu turned away, refusing to let go, and stuffed the poetry book into her bag.
Seeing his daughter treasure his poetry collection, Feng Xiaohan could no longer suppress his smile.
Yu Yu picked up the other poetry collection her father had given her and began to read.
Feng Xiaohan quietly listened to her soft, sweet voice.
Qing’an entered with freshly steamed milk cake, observing the peaceful scene between the prince and the little princess.
Heaven had finally favored the prince by sending him such a delightful daughter.
“Your Highness, little princess, the milk cake is ready.”
Hearing that the milk cake was ready, Yu Yu tossed the poetry book aside and scampered over to eat the milk cake.
