The Days of Raising a Baby with My Socially Anxious Husband Chapter 4

Chapter 4

In the small space of the elevator, Jiang Yu felt suffocated under Jiang Zhe’s icy aura and didn’t dare to breathe until they reached the ground floor and stepped apart. Only then did she feel safe to exhale.

When they exited, she initially chatted away, but sensing the low pressure radiating from Jiang Zhe, she fell silent.

The two of them maintained a heavy silence until they reached his car.

After getting into the car, the man’s expression seemed to have softened quite a bit. Only then did Jiang Yu dare to speak up and ask, “Were you unhappy just now?”

“Was it because I insisted on going into the elevator?”

Jiang Zhe denied, “No, I wasn’t.”

But she could tell he was clearly annoyed.

Jiang Zhe drove her out.

Jiang Yu thought they would go to the market for groceries, but unexpectedly, Jiang Zhe took her to a supermarket.

Inside the supermarket, there weren’t many people. Jiang Yu looked at the prices and realized that her daily meals were from such expensive ingredients. The labels read “organic vegetables,” and the prices were undeniably beautiful.

Jiang Zhe pushed a shopping cart and headed towards the meat and vegetable section.

As they walked forward, Jiang Yu noticed that the prices were several times higher than at the market.

Although he was the male lead’s uncle, according to the background in the novel, the male lead’s grandfather’s family wasn’t rich. She had thought Jiang Zhe was just an ordinary person with slightly better living conditions, but seeing him throw expensive groceries into the cart without hesitation made her feel he might be a hidden wealthy person.

Jiang Zhe remained focused, steadily adding items to the cart, while Jiang Yu followed behind. The atmosphere between them felt a bit heavy, so she broke the silence by asking, “Are all the vegetables here organic? They’re quite pricey.”

Jiang Zhe replied nonchalantly, “I don’t know.”

Jiang Yu: “?”

You didn’t know but you still bought it.

Jiang Yu was puzzled: “Then why are you buying them?”

His response was simple: “Because there are fewer people.”

Indeed, there were fewer customers. Those who could afford to shop here were likely wealthy.

Regular folks often considered cost-effectiveness when grocery shopping, and the fact that Jiang Zhe wasn’t even sure if the vegetables were organic made Jiang Yu feel like he was being taken advantage of.

But if he had the money, it didn’t matter to her since he wasn’t spending her money.

Though she thought that way, it was evident Jiang Zhe wasn’t completely ignorant. She saw him seriously picking through the items.

As Jiang Yu watched him, feeling a bit bored, she began to look around for things she could eat.

Soon, she spotted some melons that looked good, and her heart began to race. She pointed them out to Jiang Zhe, saying, “The cantaloupe over there looks pretty good.”

Jiang Zhe seemed to see through her intentions. After glancing in the direction she pointed, he said, “Buy whatever you want.”

Fantastic!

Since he said she could buy whatever she wanted, Jiang Yu didn’t hold back and quickly picked up a sizable cantaloupe.

After getting the cantaloupe, she noticed other things she wanted to try, and once she started grabbing, she couldn’t stop. She saw so many tempting items. Since she didn’t have to pay, she didn’t hesitate, quickly filling her arms with everything she desired and placing it all in the cart.

After several trips back and forth, Jiang Yu realized that she had bought nearly as much as Jiang Zhe. He at least had fresh ingredients for dinner, while her cart was filled with jelly, milk tea, biscuits, instant noodles, and a few fruits. Feeling a bit embarrassed under his gaze, she smiled awkwardly and asked, “Did I buy too much? If it’s too much, I can put some back.”

This was the first time Jiang Zhe noticed how big her appetite was.

Watching her reluctantly return some snacks to the shelves, he said, “No need. Buy whatever you want.”

Since Jiang Yu wanted to eat everything—especially with someone else paying—she no longer hesitated. After a moment of indecision about what to put back, she quickly returned everything to the cart and glanced at it, now filled with snacks, half of which were hers.

 “Have you picked everything out?”

“Just preparing. I’m choosing ingredients for dinner.” Jiang Zhe wasn’t fond of going out. When he used to live alone, he would stock up on ingredients for several days, but Jiang Yu was particular. If the ingredients weren’t fresh, she’d be unhappy. Now, he found himself going grocery shopping much more frequently than before.

“What’s for dinner?” Jiang Yu looked towards the seafood section, tentatively suggesting, “How about we have fish tonight?”

“Boiled fish.” Just the thought made Jiang Yu’s mouth water, her eyes lighting up.

Seeing her excitement, Jiang Zhe remarked, “Your taste has changed quite a bit lately.”

Alarm bells went off in Jiang Yu’s mind, and she chuckled nervously, “It’s just the pregnancy hormones changing my cravings!”

No matter how he thought of her differences, Jiang Yu would always attribute it to pregnancy.

Fortunately, Jiang Zhe only asked out of curiosity and didn’t press further.

As they finished shopping and were about to leave, they passed by a shelf with toys. A little boy was trying to reach a toy and, after looking around, spotted them and called out for help.

“Uncle, can you help me get that?”

Jiang Yu thought Jiang Zhe would be eager to help, but for a moment, his expression darkened, looking just as unhappy as he did in the elevator.

Seeing his hesitation, she stepped forward to assist, feeling a bit annoyed that he wasn’t more willing to lend a hand.

The boy was thrilled to get his toy and smiled sweetly. “Thank you, sister!”

Oh wow, such a sweet little mouth calling her sister.

Earlier, he had called Jiang Zhe “uncle.”

How delightful!

The boy looked about six or seven, with a chubby face and a handsome appearance.

In a good mood, Jiang Yu pinched his cheek, smiling, “You’re such a cutie, your words are so sweet!”

The boy bashfully replied, “My mom says to call pretty ladies ‘sister.’”

He glanced at Jiang Yu, hesitantly asking, “Sister, are you going to have a baby?”

Jiang Yu’s belly was a little round, but she didn’t look overweight. The boy seemed to think she might be pregnant but worried about offending her.

Jiang Yu smiled brightly. “Yes, I am!”

Before he could say anything else, his mother called from a distance. He waved goodbye, saying, “Sister, I’m leaving! I hope you have a pretty baby!”

Jiang Yu felt elated by the boy’s kindness. As they walked towards the checkout, she turned to Jiang Zhe and asked, “Do you think a little boy would be cute if I had one?”

Jiang Zhe didn’t care about the baby’s gender, but after the earlier encounter, he frowned and said, “Not cute.”

Realizing what he said, he turned to Jiang Yu, who understood his displeasure and found it amusing. She stifled a laugh, covering her mouth.

Jiang Zhe looked at her sparkling eyes peeking from under her hat and was momentarily stunned by her radiant smile.
