Chapter 34 Look at the look in your eyes, it’s like honey! You can almost draw a thread!
Jiang Wan lowered her long lashes, and as soon as she stepped out the door, she half-covered her mouth and quietly giggled.
But before she could enjoy the moment, she suddenly looked up—and found Fu Jingchuan standing right in front of her!
His deep, narrow eyes narrowed slightly, a hint of amusement flickering within them.
Jiang Wan froze.
She blinked her glistening almond-shaped eyes and gave a sheepish smile, incredibly awkward.
“Uh… um… I was just teasing him, hahaha… ha…” Her laugh was dry and forced.
Fu Jingchuan’s lips curled ever so slightly. He let out a quiet “Mm,” his gaze still resting on her fair face, brow slightly raised.
He hadn’t expected Jiang Wan to be so childish and cute around the kids… But why did she always seem a bit tense around him?
Fu Jingchuan recalled how earlier, in front of Grandpa, Jiang Wan had clung to his arm of her own accord. His eyes darkened instantly.
She was willing to get close to him in front of Grandpa… and even while sleepwalking… So it seemed she wasn’t as timid as she appeared.
Then why, when it was just the two of them, did she always keep a polite distance—timid and barely ever making eye contact?
Noticing Fu Jingchuan’s silence, Jiang Wan couldn’t help but grow increasingly uneasy.
Just moments ago in front of Grandpa, she had even hugged him! Now that it was just the two of them, she suddenly felt awkward again…
But then again, they’d only known each other for a few days and basically had a flash marriage.
Up until now, their only real moment of physical intimacy was when she got emotional and cried—and this man had pulled her into his arms to comfort her…
Jiang Wan’s fair cheeks suddenly flushed with heat.
In a soft, shy voice, she asked, “You… you didn’t go to the base today? Don’t you have work?”
She really needed a moment to calm down!
Fu Jingchuan looked down at her from above, and without meaning to, caught a full view of her burning red ears.
His gaze deepened, and his voice grew slightly hoarse: “Wasn’t it you who told me yesterday not to go to the base all the time?”
“I took the day off. Besides, Chenchen still isn’t fully recovered.”
“…Oh.” Jiang Wan responded softly, her long lashes trembling.
She suddenly regretted her impulsiveness from yesterday. They could’ve taken their time getting to know each other—what was the rush?
Now look what she’d done! They were going to spend the whole day alone together.
Sure, that annoying old woman had finally been kicked out, but the truth was—she had never even been in a relationship before!
So… what exactly were the two of them supposed to do together today?
Jiang Wan furrowed her delicate brows, feeling flustered.
Just then, a man’s voice came from the gate.
“Captain Fu!! Eh? You didn’t go to the base today?”
“Oh! Comrade Xiao Jiang!”
It was an uncle Jiang Wan had seen in the fields yesterday! She pressed her lips together and gave him a sweet smile, politely greeting him.
The uncle stood at the courtyard entrance, his eyes sweeping back and forth between the two of them, tone teasing:
“Oh ho! You young people really know how to be romantic, huh? Standing here in broad daylight just staring into each other’s eyes?”
“Look at those lovey-dovey glances—so sweet you could pull sugar threads out of the air!”
“…”
“…”
Both Fu Jingchuan and Jiang Wan blushed instantly and turned their heads away from each other.
Fu Jingchuan cleared his throat and walked over to the gate in long strides.
“What’s up, Uncle? Need something?”
“Captain Fu, I’m not trying to disturb your time with your young wife, but the village committee said the wheat harvest’s coming early this year. Since you finally have a day off, why don’t you go to your field and get the wheat harvested?”
“If you delay it, it’ll be too late to sell—and your family can’t eat that much on its own!”
“Even if you harvest it, you’ll still have to find someone to thresh it and grind it into flour—then haul it to the county to sell. Such a hassle!”
Hearing this, Fu Jingchuan’s lips pressed into a firm line. His dark phoenix eyes glanced over at Jiang Wan, and there was a trace of inquiry in them.
Jiang Wan happened to meet his gaze again and froze.
Was this man… asking her opinion??
“Whoa! What’s this? You need your wife’s permission for something this small?” the uncle exclaimed in shock.
He widened his eyes—this was the same Fu Jingchuan who had been married before. Why was he acting like some lovestruck rookie?
Besides, back then, he was always so cold-faced to everyone. Those previous wives of his—although legally married—were no different from roommates in the eyes of outsiders.
Not to mention, Captain Fu barely even came home back then!
“Tsk tsk tsk… It really must be thanks to Comrade Xiao Jiang! She’s got our Captain Fu so whipped he even checks her expression before making decisions!”
The uncle chuckled and gave Jiang Wan a sidelong glance. But deep down, he didn’t blame him at all.
Such a lovely, delicate young girl—like a fairy! What man wouldn’t want to spoil her?
“So? Are you going or not?” he added, turning to leave. He figured he’d said what he needed to say—it was up to the young couple to decide the rest.
To his surprise, Jiang Wan, her face red as a tomato, quickly spoke up:
“Fu… Jingchuan! You should go harvest the wheat!”
“I—I’ll bring you lunch at noon!”
“Now that Aunt Tang is gone, I’ve got nothing to do anyway. I might as well cook lunch!”
“Look at that, look at that! What a great little wife you’ve got! Aiyoo, my own wife rarely ever brings me lunch!” the uncle couldn’t help but tease Fu Jingchuan again.
Fu Jingchuan’s Adam’s apple bobbed twice—he was clearly feeling awkward.
This whole situation felt extremely unfamiliar to him.
And yet, this simple, ordinary exchange—just like what any normal husband and wife might have—unconsciously stirred a sense of warmth deep in his heart.
The back of his neck felt hot. He raised his hand and rubbed the short stubble behind his head. His voice was rough as he said, “Alright then, let’s head to the field together. I’ll try to get as much harvested as I can today!”
Then, Fu Jingchuan went to the woodshed, grabbed a sickle, and headed to the fields with the uncle.
After Fu Jingchuan left, Jiang Wan finally felt a little more at ease.
She walked into the kitchen and began rummaging through the baskets and sacks in the corner to see what vegetables were left.
But as she did, she couldn’t help but frown and silently curse herself for being so useless.
She had lived two lifetimes, after all—maybe she’d never butchered a pig, but she’d seen one run!
So why could she act all bold and natural when putting on a show, but clam up the moment it was just the two of them alone?
She was so brave in her dream last night too! Hmph!
Ughhh! Wait! What on earth was she thinking about in broad daylight?!
Jiang Wan! No being lewd! Lewdness is not allowed! (涩涩达咩呀!)
She squeezed her eyes shut in frustration, feeling like she was acting no better than some shameless female scoundrel.
Could it be that… because she had been alone and repressed for so long, the moment a rugged man who checked every one of her aesthetic boxes showed up, she completely lost her composure?
Jiang Wan continued digging through the remaining food.
She found some potatoes, carrots, eggs, as well as a bit of spinach and celery.
She also discovered a small bag of flour.
But—there was no meat left!
