The Delicate Beauty of the ’80s Went to the Countryside, Married a Gruff Man, and Became His Beloved Chapter 8

Chapter 8 This guy is not only rough, but also a bit stupid.

“…Mm.” Jiang Wan responded softly, then hesitated for a moment before tentatively saying, “Last night… you drank too much.”

“…Sorry.” Fu Jingchuan’s broad back tensed. He turned away and awkwardly put on the half-sleeve shirt hanging by the well.

Last night, he’d been drinking with some comrades and, in his drunken haze, had completely forgotten that a new girl had arrived at home. So he just came straight back. He remembered bits and pieces of what happened afterward… like her small figure struggling to drag him into the woodshed, and Fu Chen’s voice: “You touched my dad! You’re being a pervert!”

Fu Jingchuan’s long, thick black lashes dropped slightly as he glanced down at his own chest. The feeling of those soft, delicate hands touching him still seemed to linger.

His neck suddenly felt a little hot. Still turned away from Jiang Wan, his voice came out a little hoarse:
“Sorry for the trouble yesterday. I’m heading to the unit now.”

“…It’s just behind our village.”

“The sun’s almost up. Don’t worry about locking the door.”

With that, Fu Jingchuan took a long stride and pushed open the gate, leaving Jiang Wan standing there alone, blinking her clear eyes and staring in the direction he left.

That was… it?

Wait, so the newlywed husband just left her at home like that? End of story?

Jiang Wan sighed silently. She finally understood—this man wasn’t just rough; he was kind of dumb too.

From the way he treated her and the awkwardness in his words, it was clear. Suddenly, Jiang Wan felt like what the little kid said yesterday might be true after all. Fu Jingchuan really didn’t seem like someone with any romantic experience—yet he’d been married three times?

Hard to believe!

Weren’t older men supposed to be more caring? Were all those stories and TV shows lying?

Jiang Wan walked over to the well and saw a bucket of water on the ground, with a gourd scoop still floating inside. Her mind flashed back to the sight of the man’s strong, bare upper body. Her face grew hot, and she quickly squatted down to wash her face with the cold water.

She washed her face, sure… but what about brushing her teeth?

She thought about the suitcase she brought—there were definitely things missing. Maybe once the sun was fully up, she’d go out and take a walk around the village to see where she could buy some essentials.

At the Tang family’s house, the chickens had only crowed twice before Tang Feng was already up and outside in the dark.

After feeding the chickens, she heard Yuan Meilin snoring in the nearby room—and immediately got mad all over again.

Thinking about how that Jiang girl had just arrived yesterday and already managed to put both her and her daughter in their place, Tang Feng stormed over and kicked open the side room door.

Then she yanked off Yuan Meilin’s blanket.

“Still sleeping?! STILL SLEEPING?!”

“If you keep sleeping, the man I worked so hard to find for you will end up someone else’s!”

“Ow! What are you doing, Mom? It’s so early…” Yuan Meilin curled up on the kang bed, yawning and rubbing her eyes.

Tang Feng was fuming, panting angrily. She smacked Yuan Meilin on the butt.

“The chickens are crowing! Do you know what time it is?!”

“Let me tell you, Yuan Meilin—once Commander Fu registers the marriage with that Jiang girl, don’t come crying to me!”

“If you believe your mother, then hurry up and make your move on Commander Fu!”

“This girl is nothing like those women before! She’s clever—if you wait too long, Commander Fu will be completely wrapped around her little finger!”

After her rant, Tang Feng didn’t bother wasting any more words. She turned and grabbed the vegetable basket from the woodshed. Inside were a few muddy carrots and potatoes, plus two cabbage leaves. Just enough to feed the kids for a day.

After washing up, Jiang Wan went to the wardrobe and took out a fresh dress—a cotton floral one that felt very comfortable. Say what you will about the original host, but her fashion sense was decent.

The white background was dotted with tiny daisies.

In front of her small travel mirror, Jiang Wan tied her long, black hair into a braid, then fastened the end with a white lace ribbon.

In the reflection, her moist almond eyes sparkled, and her fair skin looked like the finest warm jade. Her face was no bigger than a palm, her lips a soft cherry-pink.

She looked… gorgeous, no matter the angle.

Satisfied, Jiang Wan slipped on a pair of white flats and stepped outside.

The sun was just rising, casting a wash of golden-orange light across the courtyard.

Creak—

The courtyard gate creaked open. Tang Feng peeked in with her beady eyes, then swaggered in like she owned the place.

The two kids were awake and, hearing the noise, excitedly ran over.

“Granny Tang! Granny Tang!!”

Fu Chen rushed over and hugged Tang Feng tightly.

Thinking of how that woman ate braised pork yesterday while they only got porridge, Fu Chen’s stomach growled loudly.

“Granny Tang! Yesterday Dad gave that woman braised pork! Xiao Yan and I were really good—we didn’t eat a bite! Granny Tang, can we have something yummy today?”

“…”

Hearing that, Jiang Wan suddenly remembered—she didn’t finish the food in that lunchbox yesterday. It was still sitting on the coffee table in the main room.

After she stood up, she vaguely heard Tang Feng slurp a little, then grit her teeth and say fiercely, “Good child! That’s more like it!”

“What braised pork? Grandma Tang is telling you, eating too much of that stuff will make your stomach hurt! Just wait, that auntie is going to have a stomachache soon!”

Tang Feng’s eyes flashed with jealousy after hearing what Fu Chen said. That damn girl—on her very first day here, Commander Fu brought her meat dishes all the way from the army! Do you know how much those meat dishes cost?

No way—she absolutely couldn’t just sit back and watch Jiang Wan continue living such a comfortable life!

“Oh~~ really?? So braised pork gives you a stomachache, huh?”

Before Tang Feng could head to the kitchen, a light laugh rang out not far away. She looked up and saw Jiang Wan leaning gracefully against the main house’s doorframe. Her slender arms were crossed, her long dark lashes trembled slightly, and a soft smile played on her lips.

She was so beautiful, so radiant, it was almost otherworldly—like a fairy rather than a mere mortal.

The two children were stunned!

Fu Chen blinked his bright black eyes, seemingly dazed as he murmured, “She’s so pretty… prettier than any of the aunties Dad married before…”

“Mm!!” Tang Feng quickly clamped her hand over Fu Chen’s mouth, squatted down, and whispered into his ear, “Chenchen, you can’t let her fool you! Don’t you remember what those other aunties were like?”

“They were all bad people! They just wanted to steal your dad’s money!”

“Yes!! Right! Bad person! She’s a bad person!”

As soon as Tang Feng let go, Fu Chen couldn’t wait to blurt it out.

Jiang Wan, however, just let out a chuckle, turned around without a care, and walked back into the house.

When she came back out again, she was holding a mesh bag containing an aluminum lunchbox—
