The Demon Venerable’s Wistful Desire Chapter 109

Chapter 109: The World Is At Peace And  The Four Seasons In Harmony

Xi Huai’s Divine Transformation Ascension Celebration was held with great pomp and went incredibly smoothly. This was undoubtedly due, in part, to his widespread renown.

At present, Xi Huai had become the only cultivator at the Divine Transformation stage in the cultivation world. It was rumored that right after his breakthrough to the Divine Transformation stage, he emerged from seclusion and instantly killed seventeen Nascent Soul cultivators from Nuan Yan Pavilion. The seventeen had no chance to even fight back.

This sudden event explained the mysterious deaths of those seventeen cultivators, and everyone believed it to be true.

Because of this, Xi Huai’s abilities were said to be near-mythical.

However, only those from Qingze Sect knew what had really happened before Xi Huai emerged from seclusion.

Xi Huai had only killed seven people in reality, and one of them was a Nascent Soul cultivator from Qingze Sect.

Even Xi Lin, his father, did not know that the technique Xi Huai used to kill those Nascent Soul cultivators had limitations. It could only be sustained for a short period of time and did not make him invincible.

Xi Huai had only shared this information with Chi Muyao, bearing the burden of being labeled the executioner of so many cultivators from Nuan Yan Pavilion alone.

If those from Nuan Yan Pavilion sought revenge, they would target Xi Huai and not Chi Muyao.

Given Xi Huai’s power, many cultivators naturally sought to cozy up to him. Some didn’t want to offend either him or Qingze Sect, others tried to curry favor, and still others hoped that one day, after emerging from their own secluded cultivation, they could seek his guidance.

As a result, many guests attended his celebration, so much that it seemed like the doors would break from the sheer number of visitors.

After the grand banquet, there followed many years of peace.

Xi Huai never visited Nuan Yan Pavilion again, remaining so quiet that the entire cultivation world was surprised.

Perhaps the people of Nuan Yan Pavilion thought that, after Xi Huai successfully advanced to the Nascent Soul stage, his first action would be to seek revenge against them.

However, from Xi Huai’s perspective, all those who had sought their own deaths were already gone. The demonic sect’s retaliation against the righteous sects never ceased, and it was said that the dragon vein he had destroyed in the mountains had yet to be restored. It would likely take at least a hundred years before it returned to its former state.

Leaving those remaining shrimp soldiers and crab generals from the righteous sects wasn’t a bad idea. Without them, the demonic cultivators would act with even more impunity, so letting them live served to restrain the demonic sect.

During this time, Xi Huai indulged in “catching up” with his Dao companion.

He had thought that now that he had reached the Divine Transformation stage, he could help Chi Muyao improve his cultivation more quickly. But he soon discovered that the spiritual power required for Chi Muyao to advance from the Nascent Soul stage was immense, and the rate at which Chi Muyao absorbed spiritual energy was the same as when Xi Huai had fed him energy back when he was in the Foundation Establishment stage.

It seemed… nothing had really changed.

Thus, Xi Huai began to comfort Chi Muyao, saying all the time, “As long as you persevere, you can turn an iron rod into a needle. Water can wear through stone. You can reach the Divine Transformation stage too.”

Chi Muyao: “…”

He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself and maintain his composure.

He had never intended to reach the Divine Transformation stage.

He hadn’t even thought about forming a foundation back then.

But… thanks to Xi Huai’s relentless efforts, his cultivation level had gradually reached a ridiculous degree.

Chi Muyao wasn’t overly self-sacrificing, nor did he want to bear the brunt of Xi Huai’s “enthusiasm,” but somehow, passively, he had maintained the peace of the three realms.

When Chi Muyao had first transmigrated into this book, he had imagined what Xi Huai might be like. He thought Xi Huai might be tall and imposing, or perhaps ruthless and decisive. But he never expected that this man would love playing the role of a human cauldron so much that he forgot his mission as the villain.

The greatest villain in the entire book wasn’t trying to destroy the world, didn’t oppose the male and female protagonists, and wasn’t seriously working as the demonic lord plotting to unify the three realms. Instead, he spent his days like a resentful husband, bickering over all sorts of strange things.

For example—

Xi Huai, with a dark expression, said, “You weren’t fully committed during our dual cultivation this time.”

How does one measure commitment? Was he supposed to recite a poem afterward in appreciation?

Xi Huai, frustrated, demanded, “You stopped after just six rounds. Have you already grown tired of me? Is it true that feelings change over time? Have you stopped liking me after being together for so long?”

Chi Muyao, dizzy from their “practice,” felt like he had seasickness and wanted to take a break, but this only made Xi Huai even angrier!

Where was the logic in that?

Still, that wasn’t the most absurd thing. The most ridiculous part was when Xi Huai sighed with some grievance, “You actually got up to feed the bird in the middle of our dual cultivation?”

Chi Muyao finally couldn’t take it anymore and retorted, “Qiuqiu has been hungry for ten days!”

Xi Huai was even more aggrieved than him: “Hasn’t it already reached the fasting stage? A bird with cultivation similar to a Nascent Soul stage cultivator still needs regular feeding?”

“I’m also at the Nascent Soul stage, and I don’t need regular feeding, yet you still insist on feeding me!”

“That’s different! I’m your Dao companion! Plus, I’m your cauldron! Is it wrong for me to want to be a good cauldron?”

“You, you… it’s my life-bound spirit beast!”

“Chi Muyao, you’ve become so heartless, all for a bird!”

Chi Muyao, in disbelief, pointed to himself and asked, “I… I only went to feed a bird… And we’ve already gone six rounds… How does that make me heartless?”

“Six rounds, so what? Look at how little your cultivation has improved! Do you have no ambition?”

“…” Chi Muyao couldn’t handle this injustice anymore. He sat on the bed and declared, “I’m going into seclusion.”

“No, I won’t allow it!”

“You’re being unreasonable!”

“You don’t consider your Dao companion!”

Thus, Chi Muyao and Xi Huai entered into a cold war, lasting for two whole days, where neither spoke to the other.

Chi Muyao busied himself with his tasks, pen in hand, constantly writing, while senior Qing Ming stood beside him, communicating with him.

In fact, if Xi Huai had just taken a glance, he would have seen that Chi Muyao was writing cultivation techniques that could be used at the Divine Transformation stage.

Xi Huai, meanwhile, sat in his room in the cave, meditating and adjusting his breath, researching new techniques, but his ears were always attuned to Chi Muyao’s movements.

The moment he heard Chi Muyao walk toward the cave’s entrance, he immediately got up from the lotus flower platform and rushed to block his way. “Where are you going?”

“A voice transmission talisman just came in.”

“You’re just looking for an excuse to run away. This isn’t the first time you’ve done this.”

Chi Muyao infused the talisman with spiritual energy, and two transmission talismans floated into the room.

The first was from Yi Qianxi: “Junior Brother! I’m pregnant! But what kind of thing will this child be?!”

Xi Huai, listening alongside Chi Muyao, was puzzled and asked, “What is she talking about?”

“Senior Sister is pregnant!” Chi Muyao was especially excited, grabbing Xi Huai’s hand and shaking it repeatedly.

Xi Huai was amused by his actions, his anger dissipating quite a bit. He then asked, “What does that mean?”

In Xi Huai’s understanding, “good news” meant someone had successfully advanced in cultivation, and he had no concept of reproduction.

“It means Senior Sister is having a baby.”

Chi Muyao expected Xi Huai to be happy, but instead, Xi Huai seized the opportunity to grumble: “Look at them. Azure Fox took two years to regain his human form, and it’s only been five years since then, and he and his Dao companion already have a child. They’re making progress. And you? Still at the early stage of Nascent Soul.”

Chi Muyao, feeling as though holding Xi Huai’s hand had suddenly become unlucky, quickly let go and refused to engage with him. He then checked the other voice transmission talisman.

Xi Zihe’s voice calmly transmitted: “Daoist Chi, I am Xi Zihe. My Dao companion, Han Qingyan, and I will soon be holding a Dao companion ceremony. We would like to invite you to attend. Would you honor us with your presence?”

Chi Muyao’s eyes lit up after hearing this. Two happy events at once! “Xi Zihe and Han Qingyan’s Dao companion ceremony? Of course, we must go!”

Chi Muyao looked over the invitation attached to the transmission talisman, and the invitation had Xi Huai’s name on it.

Xi Huai glanced at the invitation and, seeing that it was two months later, felt a wave of displeasure.

He had planned to go into seclusion for twenty years, but now, after only seven years, he had been interrupted.

Naturally, Chi Muyao noticed Xi Huai’s displeasure. He walked over, wrapped his arms around Xi Huai’s waist, and looked up at him, asking, “Have you reflected on it?”

“I wasn’t wrong, so why would I reflect?”

“Are you being unreasonable?”

“I’m not…”

“Will you ever admit that your attitude is bad?”

“I’ve always been like this.”

“Fine, I’m leaving seclusion then,” Chi Muyao said, letting go of Xi Huai and pretending to walk away.

“Chi Muyao!” Xi Huai panicked instantly and grabbed his wrist.

Chi Muyao paused, then poked Xi Huai’s shoulder repeatedly with his finger. “Xi Huai, have I spoiled you too much? You even argue with me about feeding the birds, and after cooling off for two days, you still think you weren’t wrong?”

“……”

“Still not reflecting?”

“Why can’t you just focus on me?”

“How am I not focusing on you? I’m already at the Nascent Soul stage. I’ll be with you for the rest of my life, for hundreds of years to come. But our life can’t just revolve around dual cultivation—we have many other things to do…”

“Like feeding the birds?”

“Not just feeding the birds…”

“Also keeping accounts?”

“And—”

“Attending the Dao Companion Ceremony and helping your little senior sister deliver her child? After she gives birth, will the pigs at the Yu Chong Sect get pregnant again?”

“…” Chi Muyao quickly stopped the conversation. “I think our argument is pointless.”

“I think it’s pointless too. We’ve had this argument so many times, and you never change.”

Chi Muyao really didn’t know how to please this young master to make him satisfied. After thinking about it, he still felt that he wasn’t wrong.

What’s wrong with feeding the birds, anyway?!

So, he simply left seclusion and really stopped paying attention to Xi Huai.

Watching Chi Muyao leave, Xi Huai’s expression slowly fell. He wanted to chase after him but didn’t. In the end, he could only sulk alone in the cave.

On the day of Xi Zihe and Han Qingyan’s Dao Companion Ceremony, although Chi Muyao and Xi Huai hadn’t reconciled yet, Xi Huai still accompanied Chi Muyao to the event.

Xi Huai was worried that people from the Nuan Yan Pavilion might make things difficult for Chi Muyao. After all, Chi Muyao had once trapped many Tianzuns from the Nuan Yan Pavilion with an array—this was the real truth behind what happened back then. Xi Huai could only feel at ease if he was there to protect Chi Muyao.

Many people seemed surprised that Xi Zihe’s Dao Companion Ceremony could invite the Demon Lord and his partner to attend, leaving everyone in shock.

From what they knew, Xi Huai and Xi Zihe shouldn’t have had any prior connection. As for the man with the peach blossom mask, many had heard of him—he was once a disciple of the Yu Chong Sect and was rumored to be the most handsome man in the Three Realms.

However, Han Qingyan and Xi Zihe had only met Chi Muyao by chance years ago. The fact that these two would grace their ceremony was quite extraordinary.

Only a few people knew the reason behind it.

Although they rarely communicated—sometimes not even a transmission talisman for years or decades—whenever one needed something, the other would come at a moment’s notice.

It was a strange kind of bond, perhaps one that could only be forged through shared life-and-death experiences.

On this busy day, Xi Zihe, spotting them from a distance, waved warmly. Chi Muyao smiled and waved back.

At that moment, Yi Qianxi arrived with the Azure Fox Ancestor beside her, exclaiming, “Han Qingyan looks so beautiful today, all dressed in fiery red!”

Chi Muyao wasn’t familiar with Han Qingyan and didn’t have much interest in bridal attire. Instead, he asked Yi Qianxi, “What about you two? When will you hold your Dao Companion Ceremony?”

Yi Qianxi shook her head. “What ceremony? I don’t have any relatives, and he has even fewer. We’ll just gather some close friends for a drink. We’re both broke, so I’ll be happy if he even bothers to wear clothes every day.”

The Yu Chong Sect was poor.

After transforming into his human form, the Azure Fox Ancestor lived in the Miasma Forest. Although he picked up a few things from the Xianhuang Sect cultivators, they were still poor.

The two of them lived a humble life, but fortunately, they didn’t mind and were content together.

Chi Muyao pondered for a moment and said, “Let’s recruit a few more disciples next year. We can go hunting with Qingze Sect from time to time, and if we collaborate, we should be able to earn quite a few spirit stones.”

“Sure, that sounds like a good way to rely on a big tree for shelter.” Yi Qianxi began worrying about the baby again. “Can you check my pulse and see if what I’m carrying is a fox or a human? Humans are pregnant for ten months, foxes for two months. I don’t even know when I’ll give birth. What if it’s a mix and ends up being five months?”

Chi Muyao was also perplexed. He examined Yi Qianxi for a long time but couldn’t tell what she was carrying.

They kept chatting, while nearby, Xi Huai and the Azure Fox Ancestor kept staring at their hands, which occasionally touched as Chi Muyao checked Yi Qianxi’s pulse. Even though it was a simple pulse-check, their gazes were like nails, fixed on Chi Muyao and Yi Qianxi’s hands.

“I can’t figure it out, and the Colorless Yuni Deer’s ability is useless here,” Chi Muyao finally gave up. “Just keep an eye on it. If you want, you can stay at Qingze Sect for a while—it’ll be easier for me to take care of you.”

Yi Qianxi shook her head vigorously. “No need, I’ll be fine. I wouldn’t be comfortable staying at your place.”

“Alright then.”

These two hadn’t seen each other for a while, so they sat together, chatting, snacking on melon seeds, and occasionally going off to greet familiar acquaintances. Meanwhile, the Azure Fox Ancestor and Xi Huai sat silently in their places, the atmosphere between them equally quiet.

Gradually, some cultivators, observing from a distance, started to gossip: “I’ve heard that the Demon Lord and his Dao companion are inseparable, but today, they seem quite distant, barely communicating. It seems their relationship isn’t as deep as rumored.”

“People in the Demon Sect never stay loyal for long. They probably have their own lovers by now, especially those from the Hehuan Sect… You know what I mean.”

Unfortunately, the newly appointed sect leader overheard these words.

Yu Yanshu walked over slowly and said to them, “Don’t judge the cultivation world by appearances. My master and mistress were rumored to have been at odds for years, yet they’re still together, aren’t they? If you want to survive well in the cultivation world, you’d better learn to use your brains.”

The two hurriedly scampered away.

Yu Yanshu turned to glance at them but didn’t pursue the matter further. Instead, he stood on the platform, gazing into the distance to check on whether the Dao companion ceremony for Xi Zihe and Han Qingyan was proceeding smoothly.

At that moment, Yi Qianxi and Chi Muyao approached from afar. Yu Yanshu, typically indifferent, finally smiled faintly. “You’ve arrived?”

Chi Muyao nodded, then looked around at the Nuan Yan Pavilion and sighed, “The Nuan Yan Pavilion has been rebuilt quite beautifully.”

Yu Yanshu sighed as well. “It’s not as grand as it once was, but things are changing for the better. I hope you’re not disappointed by what you see.”

He looked again at the Nuan Yan Pavilion. The Jade Tower, the golden halls, and the incense burner in the treasure cauldron were majestic.

The grand main hall, adorned with intricate carvings and jade, glittered with endless colored glass. The marble pillars were draped with festive decorations, burning red like flames.

The disciples no longer appeared as rigid as before; instead, they were more lively, and the sect was filled with an atmosphere of peace and harmony.

Such a beautiful sight was what they had long wished for.

Now, the Nuan Yan Pavilion was no longer the leading sect, and other sects were slowly rising.

Yu Yanshu didn’t feel any sense of crisis, as if maintaining this balance was the only way to keep things stable. If their sect remained too dominant, always standing at the top, it would inevitably become distorted.

Chi Muyao and Yu Yanshu noticed that Guannan Tianzun and Si Ruoyu had also arrived for the ceremony.

Back then, Guannan Tianzun and Si Ruoyu had caused quite a stir with their relationship, but neither cared about the gossip. Today, since it was the Dao companion ceremony for Guannan Tianzun’s disciple, naturally, he had to attend.

Yu Yanshu glanced at them and smiled. “The ceremony is about to begin, and I have to sit there to receive the tea offering.”

He chuckled bitterly after speaking. Though he was Xi Zihe’s senior brother, he was now required to accept the reverence of a senior.

“Go on,” Chi Muyao nodded.

The ceremony officially began.

“Dao companions, ring the bell.”

“Dao companions, offer tea.”

“Dao companions, recognize each other.”

“Dao companions, offer incense!”

“The ceremony is complete!”

Chi Muyao had unexpectedly found himself inside a book, where he had become a crucial character leading to the villain’s downfall.

Having spent over a hundred years navigating the events within the book, he had gradually transitioned from a minor character to one of considerable influence. Now, he could sit beside his Dao companion and friend, watching the Dao companion ceremony of the novel’s protagonists.

The male and female leads were finally united, in perfect harmony.

The second male lead had successfully become the sect leader, guiding the Nuan Yan Pavilion toward a bright future.

As for him—

He turned his head to look at Xi Huai, who sat beside him.

He felt like a mere candle flame, while Xi Huai was a blazing sun that illuminated the entire world.

The sun’s brilliance overshadowed everything else, unrivaled, while he was just a tiny, unnoticed spark.

Yet, somehow, they had fused together. The small flame had grown, nurtured and protected by the sun, cherished deeply.

There was no mismatch, nothing out of place. As long as that love burned brightly, they would be lifelong companions, hand in hand.

After returning from the Nuan Yan Pavilion, Chi Muyao busied himself in the Hall of Affairs for a few days before resuming his leisurely life.

Xi Huai seemed to have grown restless, beginning to hover around Chi Muyao, as if wanting to reconcile.

Chi Muyao continued to ignore him.

Unable to bear it, Xi Huai, along with Song Weiyue and Zong Sichen, began catching insects all over the forest. He then brought a jar full of them to Chi Muyao, declaring, “These are the fattest bugs on the mountain. You can use them as bait for fishing or feed them to the birds.”

His domineering tone made it sound like he was saying, “I want the entire cultivation world to know that all the bugs in this forest belong to you.”

Chi Muyao glanced at him, noticing that Song Weiyue and Zong Sichen had hurriedly hidden away. A small smile tugged at his lips, but he didn’t reveal anything.

With a steady voice, he asked, “Are you no longer jealous about feeding the birds or fishing?”

Xi Huai, deflated, hung his head and replied, “No.”

“And what about being jealous of my junior sister from the Hall of Affairs, or that sow from the Beast Taming Sect?”

“No.”

Chi Muyao had long stopped being angry, feeling more helpless than anything, unsure of why Xi Huai kept fussing over trivial matters.

Now that Xi Huai had shown weakness, Chi Muyao beckoned him, “Come here, sit down.”

He had intended for Xi Huai to sit beside him, but Xi Huai insisted on squeezing into the same chair, hugging him, clinging to his back like a spoiled child.

Chi Muyao grasped Xi Huai’s hand and placed it on the fishing rod, speaking gently, “Let me teach you how to fish.”

“Okay.”

It seemed Xi Huai had mustered all his patience, sitting with Chi Muyao for a long time by the lakeside, fishing together.

The mountain air was warm, and the vast, misty lake stretched before them, the willow leaves and bamboo shoots swaying gently in the breeze.

At first, Chi Muyao had found it a bit cramped, sitting so close together. But gradually, he grew accustomed to it, leaning back into Xi Huai’s embrace. His broad shoulders were more comfortable than any chair, and the warmth radiating through their robes made him feel cozy, so much so that he soon drifted off to sleep.

The sunset cast a golden glow over them, the gentle breeze stirring their hair and the hems of their robes, creating a scene of perfect tranquility.

A fish suddenly bit the hook, jolting Chi Muyao awake. He quickly reeled it in, happily placing the fish into the bucket, before turning to Xi Huai, eager to give him a high-five.

Unsure how to respond, Xi Huai vaguely recalled seeing Chi Muyao and Yi Qianxi high-five before. Tentatively, he raised his hand, and Chi Muyao promptly high-fived him, exclaiming, “Amazing! You caught such a big one on your first try!”

Xi Huai stared at Chi Muyao’s joyous face, suddenly feeling his heart race. It was strange—though they had been together for so long, seeing him again stirred new feelings of affection each time.

Snapping back to reality, Xi Huai marveled at how simply watching Chi Muyao’s happiness during their quiet moments together was enough to bring him contentment.

Smiling softly, Xi Huai helped Chi Muyao carry the bucket, and the two walked back to Xi Huai’s mountain, laughing and chatting along the way.

Their hands were tightly clasped, fingers intertwined. Even someone as fierce as Xi Huai became gentle at that moment, gazing down at his companion with a tender smile.

It was as if they had never quarreled, their sweetness as fresh as the beginning.

After spending so many years together, Chi Muyao had once felt uneasy about the seemingly endless time stretching ahead.

But later, he realized that such unease was unnecessary. Occasionally spicing things up with harmless banter and playful moments kept life from becoming dull.

Look, the night had quietly fallen, with stars resting on the clouds and the moon reflecting in the water, causing a monkey to try its hardest to fish it out.

We never knew what beauty the world held until we met each other. Sometimes, in quiet moments, I sigh and think: it’s truly a blessing to have found you.

After yet another long seclusion, it was unclear how many sect affairs had piled up again. Luckily, Chi Muyao’s disciples had become more capable over time and could handle things efficiently on his behalf.

During this period, Si Ruoyu likely caused a commotion at Qingze Sect again. She constantly sought to have Chi Muyao take over as the Hehuan Sect leader, which made him avoid her, fearing he might actually end up as the sect master.

He truly didn’t want the role.

Yi Qianxi and the youngest daughter of the Azure Fox Ancestor were both quite healthy. This little girl had inherited the alluring appearance of the Azure Fox Ancestor, with her eyebrows and eyes resembling his to such an extent that it seemed as though he was afraid others wouldn’t realize they were father and daughter.

When her spiritual power was out of control, fox ears would occasionally appear on her head, and a tail would show up behind her.

The Azure Fox Ancestor didn’t care about surnames, so the child took Yi Qianxi’s surname.

Chi Muyao was very fond of this little girl and would often visit her, feeling the joy of a grandparent finally holding their granddaughter.

Chi Muyao felt Xi Huai kissing his tears, as if intending to continue.

With a hoarse voice, he held onto Xi Huai’s neck and softly pleaded, “Xi Huai, stop cultivating… If we keep going, my cultivation level will surpass the sect master’s. Then won’t I have to become the sect master of the Hehuan Sect?”

Xi Huai, imagining Chi Muyao becoming a sect master and being distracted by even more duties, felt a bit sulky but didn’t want to stop. He could only negotiate, “Then can you just do it without absorbing any spiritual energy?”

This request was simply too difficult for Chi Muyao, but seeing Xi Huai’s fervent gaze, he couldn’t refuse and obediently said, “I’ll try—”

Before he could finish speaking, his words were swallowed by a kiss.

There are no disciples in the Hehuan Sect who can’t cultivate, only those who don’t work hard enough.

This would probably become Xi Huai’s first life principle, one he would hold onto forever.

[End of the novel]

It’s really true that the protagonist needs the villain and not the other way around. Xi Zihe still got the golden fingers and the female lead, but he still remained much more low profile than the villain and the second male lead. I’m glad though that Xi Zihe wasn’t like those self-righteous annoying protagonists who keep causing problems because they need the attention.
