Chapter 20: Who Says You Can’t Have Both Loafing and a Man?
Fu Yanci looked at Su Wantang with eyes full of doting amusement. His lips curved into a slight smile as he took steady strides forward and opened the ward door.
He said softly, “Since I personally brought you out, naturally I’ll treat you to a meal. Come on, I’ll take you to the state-run restaurant.”
Su Wantang was truly hungry at this point, and didn’t bother with false politeness. She quickly went out, walking side-by-side with Fu Yanci.
The town hospital was quite close to the state-run restaurant. Leaving the hospital and passing through a few alleys, they arrived.
Seeing Fu Yanci’s familiarity with the route, Su Wantang curiously asked, “Captain Fu, do you often come to town?”
Fu Yanci shook his head and answered truthfully, “Not often. Since joining the army, I haven’t been home in many years.”
Su Wantang nodded with a smile. When she turned her head, she saw the four large characters of the state-run restaurant.
Her eyes shone with hunger; she eagerly trotted inside, pushing open the door.
Fortunately, it was past lunchtime, so the restaurant wasn’t crowded and there was no need to queue.
Su Wantang excitedly went to the ordering area, her eyes sparkling as she scanned the menu board.
She slightly raised her chin, extending her slender fingers to lightly point at the dishes.
Then, she murmured to Fu Yanci, “We definitely need this braised pork; it looks so tempting. Will you eat it?”
Fu Yanci nodded slightly. “Order whatever you like; I’m not picky.”
Su Wantang shifted her gaze back to the menu. “We ordered meat, so let’s also get a stir-fried green vegetable; a balanced diet is important!”
“This, this, and a bowl of tomato and egg soup!”
“Hmm… should we order fish? This fish looks good too, but there are only two of us, can we finish it?”
Fu Yanci nodded in response. “Order it all; we can finish it.”
Su Wantang grinned in satisfaction, turning around to find a window seat.
In the height of summer, a warm breeze blew in from the window, feeling like it had just come out of a steamer.
Su Wantang propped her chin, looking at the shade of willows outside the window, when she suddenly remembered something.
She turned her head and whispered, “After you left my house yesterday, did you kick Fang Shishen into a ditch?”
Fu Yanci’s eyes widened slightly, looking at Su Wantang in surprise.
After a moment, his mood turned low, and he nodded in admission. “Yes, I did. Twice.”
Upon hearing this, Su Wantang burst out laughing. “I guessed right! You’re that do-gooder who doesn’t want any credit.”
Fu Yanci questioned, “Do-gooder? I thought you’d be unhappy that I kicked him.”
Su Wantang looked astonished. “You wouldn’t have heard the village gossip and thought I had feelings for him, would you?”
Fu Yanci honestly nodded.
In his past life, he had heard too much about Su Wantang falling for Fang Shishen from the intellectual youth point.
Although he later learned that Su Wantang and Fang Shishen’s supposed affair was a setup by Song Shiyi,
he remained doubtful about whether she truly liked Fang Shishen.
Or perhaps it was just gossip spread after people saw Su Wantang and Fang Shishen behaving inappropriately.
The doubts from his past life remained unresolved until this life.
So Fu Yanci took this opportunity to look at Su Wantang seriously.
He asked, “Comrade Su, if Fang Shishen and Song Shiyi weren’t having an affair, would you… would you still like him?”
Sunlight streamed through the window cracks, casting dappled shadows on Fu Yanci’s face.
Su Wantang regretted not having a mirror; otherwise, she would have made him look at himself.
With his top-tier looks, he was actually worried about his fiancée falling for someone else?
The original character in the book was naive and inexperienced in love, so she was easily deceived by Fang Shishen’s sweet words.
But she was different!
She was an old hand who had experienced the harsh realities of life!
After transmigrating to this era, she was bound to be arranged into a marriage.
Given the lack of freedom in marriage, the original character was lucky.
Her fiancé wasn’t some bizarre character, but a handsome, capable, and well-built officer!
Su Wantang, this old hand, naturally wouldn’t let go of such a perfect catch.
Who says you can’t have both loafing and a man?
While loafing, getting cozy with such a perfect man—isn’t that even more blissful?
In this era, although resources were scarce and life was tight, marriage was a very serious matter.
Su Wantang’s expression was calm as she raised her hand to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
Then, with a solemn expression and serious tone, she said, “Captain Fu, I have never had feelings for Fang Shishen.”
