Gu Yunshu and Gu Yunko were a bit reluctant to leave Aunt Ke. They seemed a bit listless when they first got on the carriage.

But after leaving the city gate for a while, they finally perked up.

It was the first time the two children had ridden in a carriage. The cushions under their bottoms were soft, and there were boards on all four sides. When the curtains were drawn, the sun couldn’t shine in, and they couldn’t see outside.

It was already late, so Gu Yundong took them to an inn to stay overnight. They set out again the next day after the city gate opened, heading for Yongfu Village.

Nailiang did find them a good village. Yongfu Village was about two hours away from the county town and an hour away from the town. It would take three days to reach the capital. This was only the walking time; it would be faster with a carriage or an ox cart.

Therefore, when they set out from the county town and arrived at Yongfu Village in a carriage, it was still early in the day.

Many people in the village were already busy in the fields, and almost every household had smoke rising as they cooked breakfast.

The children in the village gathered at the entrance, playing and making noise. Suddenly, they saw a large carriage approaching, and they ran up curiously.

There were only two households in the village that had carts pulled by oxen, and carriages were very expensive. They couldn’t even afford to buy them, let alone ride in them.

Now, seeing a spirited horse pulling a large carriage, they surrounded it in curiosity. Who was this, and why were they coming to their village in a carriage? What was even more rare was that there was a cart behind the carriage.

The speed of the carriage slowed down, and Gu Yundong opened the curtain and saw a child walking up to the side.

She waved to him and handed him a candy, asking, “Do you know how to get to the village chief’s house?”

The child, about the same size as Gu Yunshu, brightened up when he saw the candy, and his mouth watered. Their village wasn’t very prosperous, and they didn’t have many opportunities to eat candy. They could only taste it during the New Year.

He nodded eagerly, “I know, I know. I’ll take you there.”

He stuffed the candy into his mouth and ran ahead to lead the way.

The other children looked on enviously. If they had known earlier, they would have run faster to be the first to speak.

Gu Yundong then lowered the curtain, but the next moment, she suddenly lifted it again and watched a figure flash by in the distance, feeling… somewhat familiar.
