“Yundong, sister.” Her voice was still a bit loud.
Gu Yundong’s brows couldn’t help but furrow. Feeling a bit annoyed, she put down her pen and asked, “What’s the matter?”
“It’s getting late. My mother said if you’re going to cook dinner, let me help you.” Well, help by telling her where the firewood was and where to find water.
Gu Yundong looked at the sky. It was almost four o’clock, still too early for her. Plus, she hadn’t finished drawing yet. If she waited too long, it would be dark, and without electric lights, it would be dark with only oil lamps. So, she had to finish her work while it was still light.
Thus, she directly told Chen Yulan at the door, “We had a late lunch, so we’re not hungry yet. You go ahead and cook. We’ll eat later. I still have something to finish.”
She glanced at Gu Yunshu and the others. The two children patted their bellies, “We’re still full.”
Chen Yulan at the door heard this, pursed her lips, and left.
Meanwhile, in the courtyard, Yang Shi was watering the vegetables. Seeing her come out in a huff, she couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong?”
“They said they’re not hungry.” Chen Yulan snorted. “They must have eaten steamed buns for lunch. I smelled it when I passed by their window. They must have eaten a lot, but I don’t know how they split it between the two of them. They really don’t know how to be human.”
She raised her head and asked Yang Shi, “Do you think they’re trying to take advantage of us, so they won’t cook until we’re eating, and then send the two children over to beg for food?”
Yang Shi’s eyes flashed. “The way you put it, it makes sense. They’ve escaped famine. I’ve heard that those refugees didn’t have anything to eat on the road, even if they had money. They had to beg for food. Maybe they all have this habit of using the two children to take advantage of others.”
“What should we do?”
“Wait!! I want to see who can’t wait to eat first. They have children among them.”
“Okay, then if they ask us for a couple of dishes later, let them buy them, and charge them a bit higher. They have money.”
Gu Yundong had no idea that just because they wanted to eat dinner a little later, this mother and daughter duo could conjure up such a plot in their minds.
She was almost done with her drawing and had been at it for nearly half an hour. As darkness fell, Yang Shi had already lit the oil lamp, and only then did she stop.
She sighed, rubbed her shoulders, and tidied up the drawings before saying to everyone, “It’s getting late. We didn’t bring any vegetables, but I have some dumplings I made yesterday morning at Aunt Ke’s house. Shall we have dumplings for dinner?”
The dumplings had been steamed, and the weather was cool now. Even if they were left for a couple of days, they wouldn’t spoil, especially since she had been secretly keeping them in her space, keeping them fresh.
Although they had already eaten dumplings twice at Aunt Ke’s house, they still wanted to eat them.
“I want to eat two bowls,” Gu Yuke said.
Gu Yundong then brought out the dumplings, and Yang Shi helped her start the fire.
Entering the kitchen, Gu Yundong saw the cold stove and pots and couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows. Hadn’t the mother and daughter duo cooked dinner yet?
At this time, Chen Yulan had already run to their house and excitedly told her mother, who was eating date cakes, “They couldn’t wait any longer and started cooking dinner.”
