“This is my first time eating fried rice with eggs.” Shao Qingyuan looked at the large bowl placed in front of him. The golden eggs and white rice grains intertwined, each grain distinct. Amidst the swirling smoke, a rich aroma kept wafting into his nose, increasing his appetite.
Gu Yundong had just taken off her apron and was momentarily stunned at his words. Then she remembered the incident where he was mistaken for a wolf cub.
These past few days, she had heard quite a bit about Shao Qingyuan’s story.
Shao Qingyuan was rescued from within Jiuhu Mountain by his grandfather. It was said that he was just a newborn baby at the time, and there was even a wolf carcass next to him. It’s unclear how the wolf died.
His grandfather’s surname was Li. At the time, the main Li family only had two daughters and no sons. So, his grandfather put Shao Qingyuan under the name of the eldest daughter’s family.
Later, when the eldest daughter had a son of her own, she wasn’t very kind to Shao Qingyuan. When Shao Qingyuan was fourteen, he was kicked out by the eldest daughter’s family. His grandfather refused to stay without him and left the Li family with him.
But not long after, his grandfather fell seriously ill and passed away. Since then, Shao Qingyuan changed his surname to Shao, the surname he was found with as a baby.
Shao Qingyuan’s life in the first decade or so wasn’t much different from Gu Yundong’s previous life. Later, when he was alone, he probably never learned to make dishes like fried rice with eggs.
But Gu Yundong didn’t know that Shao Qingyuan wasn’t incapable of making fried rice with eggs. He was actually a kitchen disaster, capable of burning down half the kitchen while cooking a meal.
Since his grandfather’s death, whenever the weather was hot, he mostly worked odd jobs in the town or county and bought food from the streets. But whenever he was in the village, he would buy several days’ worth of coarse grain mantou from the town, eating very…roughly.
Gu Yundong couldn’t find the words to say as she watched him eat heartily.
It wasn’t until he finished and left that Gu Yundong returned to her room with the warm forty taels of silver in her hands.
The three people in the house were already asleep. Gu Yundong felt relieved and quickly fell asleep herself.
However, Shao Qingyuan came and went, lying on the roof nearby at this time. One hand was behind his head, the other on his stomach, gazing up at the sky above.
The gleam in his eyes was even brighter than during the day.
Gu Yundong slept soundly, feeling satisfied. There was no early morning commotion from the Fang family, making the whole world feel quiet.
With the silver in hand, she was eager to go see the newly built house on the homestead.
This time she took the Yang family with her. Things were bustling over at the homestead, and Feng Daneng had already started working with over twenty strong young men.
Seeing her, Feng Daneng immediately came over. “How’s everyone’s spirits? Pretty good, right?”
Indeed, they were. Most of these people were from the village or the neighboring one, all brought by Feng Daneng.
The price Gu Yundong offered was high, so the people who came naturally were happy. Usually, when people built houses, they could earn at most thirty wen a day, including lunch. However, the food provided was usually just boiled cabbage and coarse grain mantou, which weren’t worth ten wen. It was better to eat at home.
Some people also greeted Gu Yundong. Seeing the young girl clean and refreshing, their favorability towards her increased even more.
Gu Yundong smiled and nodded to each of them. Seeing everyone sweating profusely, she thought for a moment and went to knock on the door of a neighboring house.
Her homestead was remote, with only two or three neighboring families.
