With a swift “whoosh,” the crossbow bolt shot towards the man’s throat with lightning speed, piercing through his neck and ‘thunk,’ pinning him to the ground.
The man didn’t even have time to react, just widened his eyes incredulously, his throat emitting a raspy “huhu” sound, and ultimately fell to the ground with a face full of unwillingness.
Gu Yundong exhaled deeply, then cautiously proceeded inside with the crossbow in hand.
Just as she took two steps, stumbling footsteps came from inside the house.
Gu Yundong abruptly halted, aiming the crossbow at the doorway.
Soon enough, a man stumbled out of the house, one hand covering his arm, blood dripping between his fingers. His face was full of panic, and as he reached the yard, he intended to call out to his companion, only to find that when he turned his head, his companion was already lying on the ground, dead.
Gu Yundong was puzzled, her crossbow ready to strike.
But before she could aim, another man emerged from the house.
He was clad in armor, his face filled with a grim aura, wielding a sword with fresh blood dripping from its tip.
With a single glance, he spotted Gu Yundong standing there, then turned to see the fallen man, understanding dawning on him. He nodded at her, “Thank you.”
Gu Yundong thought to herself, “β¦So there were originally people in this house? And it seems like quite skilled fighters.”
The man turned away, once again focusing on the intruder who attempted to harm them.
The latter knelt on the ground in despair, “Mercy, sir! It was my folly, I was blind to the truth, I deserve to die, I’m a scoundrel, spare me. I was truly desperate, in this world, I had no choice but toβ¦ ah⦔
Before he could finish his plea, the man raised his sword abruptly, piercing through his neck.
The man let out a brief cry, then fell to the ground lifeless.
With the two beasts now dead, Gu Yundong dared not relax. Facing the man, she began to assess the current situation.
Just then, another figure dashed out of the house, a small child of about five or six years old.
“Uncle Gao, Brother Bai is awake, hurry inside,” a soft voice sounded as the child ran out and hugged the man’s thigh, looking up at him.
Gao Feng immediately covered the child’s eyes, not allowing him to see the dead bodies on the ground. His previously cold and aloof expression instantly softened, his voice gentle as if he were a different person, “Uncle Gao knows, you go inside first, don’t let your sister come out, tell Brother Bai that I still have some matters to attend to here, it’ll be over soon.”
“Okay.” The little boy nodded obediently, then Gao Feng turned him around, and he trotted back inside.
He didn’t even notice Gu Yundong still standing in the yard.
Gu Yundong’s expression was as if thunderstruck. She had messed up!!
The targets of these two scoundrels were not her family of four, but the four people in this courtyard, who also had two children. Yes, they had mentioned before the fair-skinned little children, while her own siblings were thin and couldn’t be compared to the fair-skinned ones.
Gu Yundong quickly reassessed her position. She put away the crossbow, her expression serious as she said to Gao Feng, “You don’t need to thank me. I just happened to overhear what they said, knowing these two are not good people, actually wanting to harm two little children. Anyone with a conscience wouldn’t sit idly by, so I followed them, thinking if I could lend you a hand, I would.”
