As soon as the two men spotted Kaizi, they hurried over, their voices tinged with urgency.
“Brother Kaizi, where have you been? Do you know what time it is? We’ve already loaded two trucks of goods!”
The second man chimed in, equally anxious.
“Yeah, did you find another driver? We’ve got four trucks today. If we can’t find someone, who’s going to drive the last one?”
Unlike the two men’s frantic expressions, Kaizi remained calm. He glanced lazily at them and replied with an unhurried tone:
“Sanmao, Xiaozhong, why are you panicking? I’m here, aren’t I? If such a small issue can throw you off, how can I lead you to build an empire?”
Kaizi’s relaxed attitude only added to their exasperation.
“It’s not that, brother. It’s just getting late, and two trucks are already loaded. Xiaozhong and I need to hit the road now.”
From this exchange, Anxin identified the speaker as Sanmao. She casually observed the two men, mentally matching their faces to their names. Since she planned to frequently rent vehicles from Kaizi in the future, it made sense to remember his trusted aides.
Xiaozhong added his voice to the plea.
“Yeah, brother Kaizi, did you or didn’t you find a driver? We’re on a deadline! There’s no way we can get all the goods delivered with just the three of us.”
Watching their increasingly desperate expressions, Kaizi gave each of them a light knock on the head with his knuckles.
“Calm down, will you? After all this time with me, haven’t you learned to stay composed? Since two trucks are ready, you two can leave now. Anxin and I will handle the rest.”
“Anxin?”
Hearing the name, the two men finally noticed the young woman standing to the side. As their gazes landed on her youthful face, their expressions shifted from urgency to skepticism.
Sanmao turned back to Kaizi, incredulous.
“Brother Kaizi, are you joking? This girl is going to drive a truck?”
Xiaozhong snickered.
“Exactly. She looks so delicate—she probably can’t even climb into the driver’s seat.”
Their mocking remarks made the two burst into laughter, filled with disbelief and condescension.
Anxin, however, stood silently.
Was it that funny? Who said girls couldn’t drive trucks? Men always liked to claim women were too emotional or lacked capability. These two were proving that men could be just as narrow-minded.
Kaizi ignored their taunts. Lighting a cigarette, he exhaled a puff of smoke directly toward Anxin, making her cough violently.
Black-faced, Anxin shot Kaizi a warning glare.
“Don’t blow smoke in my direction. I don’t like secondhand smoke.”
If the situation had been less urgent, she might’ve socked him one.
Sanmao sneered at the exchange and mockingly quipped, “Wow, brother Kaizi, where’d you pick up this feisty kid?”
To Sanmao, truck driving was a man’s job, and the idea of this girl stepping into their territory rubbed him the wrong way.
Kaizi smirked, unfazed by the tension. “Anxin, my guys don’t seem convinced. How about you show them what you’ve got?”
He wasn’t entirely sure of Anxin’s driving skills either, but this was the perfect opportunity to test her. Besides, talent spoke louder than words, and his philosophy had always been to let ability do the talking.
Anxin’s lips curled into a faint smile as she met Kaizi’s gaze. She glanced at the two men behind him, whose expressions brimmed with doubt and provocation.
Without another word, she stretched out her hand toward Kaizi.
“Keys.”
Kaizi turned to Xiaozhong.
“Give her the keys.”
Smirking, Xiaozhong tossed the keys toward her and couldn’t resist another jab.
“Wow, she’s got guts, huh?”
Anxin caught the keys and replied curtly, “Save your breath. Let’s see who has the real skills.”
Leaving the snide remarks behind, she swiftly climbed into the truck. In one smooth motion, she started the engine, shifted gears, and hit the accelerator. The fully loaded truck surged forward like an arrow, leaving the three men standing in stunned silence.
Inside the truck, Anxin kept her focus on the road, glancing occasionally at the rearview and side mirrors.
She was able to drive the car steadily, and at the turn, in order to show her ability, An Xin even drifted deliberately.
The men watching from behind were dumbfounded.
Sanmao broke the silence. “Wow, brother Kaizi, where’d you find this girl? She drives better than Xiaozhong!”
Xiaozhong bristled. “Hey! You were the one mocking her earlier. Now you’re insulting me?”
Kaizi’s lips quirked into a faint smile as the truck returned with a clean, sharp turn.
“Where else? Picked her up on the way here.”
Kaizi wasn’t lying. He had randomly offered Anxin a driving job during their earlier encounter, and she had surprised him with her skill. Now, as he watched her masterful handling of the truck, he thought, Maybe paying her 400 foreign exchange coupons per day isn’t such a bad deal after all.
