When An Xin spoke, her words left everyone speechless.
“Oh my, I thought you were joking at first. I didn’t expect you to actually come.”
Bai Yichen replied, “I never joke.”
His principles were simple—he always followed through, especially when it came to the people closest to him. Empty promises were never his style.
It seemed his little wife didn’t understand him well enough yet. They still needed to work on their communication!
An Xin: “…”
Fine, she admitted it. She had unfairly judged him with a small-minded perspective.
On second thought, having this man with a truck that could carry far more cargo than their fleet was indeed a good thing.
Even if they managed just one trip per day, over ten days they could move a significant amount. Their transport plan might even finish ahead of schedule, sparing them the daily stress.
Once the transportation plan was complete, she could happily collect the final payment from Su Yipeng.
Just imagining a large sum of money landing in her pocket made her so happy she wanted to whistle.
Feeling giddy, the cheerful woman broke into a smile and turned to the man in the driver’s seat with a sycophantic tone.
“Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s head to the cargo yard. It’s still early. Let’s make two more trips before dinner.”
Originally, she had planned to call it a day after one more run. But suddenly, she felt invigorated, ready to tackle two extra trips with ease.
With their renewed energy, the entire team threw themselves into hauling cargo to the destination. By 10 p.m., they were finally seated at the dinner table.
When An Xin returned to the rental house with Bai Yichen, Xiaozhong and Sanmao were already seated at the table. Their eyes sparkled at the sight of the hearty meal, their mouths watering as they resisted the urge to dig in.
Kai Zi discreetly glanced at Bai Yichen before quickly looking away. At the same time, Bai Yichen gave the trio a once-over, then lowered his gaze and followed An Xin to the table.
When they reached the table, Bai Yichen pulled out a chair for An Xin like a gentleman. She sat down gracefully, their movements seamless and natural, as if choreographed.
Seeing An Xin sit down, Xiaozhong immediately called out, “An Xin, you’re finally here! If you’d been any later, we wouldn’t have died from exhaustion but from drooling over all this food.”
They have to admit that the food at Anxin’s house is really good. Ever since they started eating at her place, Sanmao and Xiaozhong realized that meals could be a joy rather than just a necessity.
After hauling cargo all afternoon, they were starving. But Anyang had insisted they wait until her sister arrived before serving the final dishes. It was a family rule: everyone had to be present at the table before starting.
While the An family seemed full of rules, Kai Zi and his gang, who lived without structure, had no problem adapting.
From the kitchen, Anyang poked her head out and scolded them, “What’s the rush? It’s not like you’re not going to eat. You look like starving ghosts reincarnated.”
Xiaozhong: “…”
Why couldn’t An Xin’s sister be as gentle and sweet as her? Why did she always appear with an apron, hands on her hips? If she added a spatula to the mix and roared like a lion, they’d probably be too scared to eat.
Anyang’s words weren’t without reason. She was afraid that once the remaining dishes were served, these ravenous young men would devour everything in seconds, leaving nothing for her sister and brother-in-law.
Now that An Xin had arrived with Bai Yichen, Anyang brought out the last dishes: braised potatoes with pork intestines, sweet and sour pork belly, and fish fillets with pickled vegetables.
An Xin invited everyone to sit, then turned to Anyang. “Are all the dishes ready?”
She glanced at the table: there were braised potatoes with pork intestines, sweet and sour pork belly, fish fillets with pickled vegetables, braised chicken feet, stir-fried eggs with green peppers, fried peanuts, napa cabbage with taro soup, and stir-fried bamboo shoots. The variety of dishes was well-balanced, with a mix of meat and vegetables.
Sanmao and Xiaozhong were practically drooling. If not for Kai Zi’s warning glance, they might have started eating already.
Carrying a pot of rice, Anyang replied, “Sister, everything’s ready. We can start now.”
An Xin nodded, naturally ladling a bowl of soup for Bai Yichen. She addressed everyone, “Alright, everyone’s worked hard today. Let’s eat and rest early. Tomorrow, we’ll give it our all again.”
Bai Yichen accepted the bowl of soup from her hands and said softly, “Thank you.”
Under everyone’s watchful eyes, he elegantly took a sip from the bowl.
Sitting across from him, Kai Zi observed the interaction and lazily commented, “An Xin, aren’t you going to introduce us to your friend here?”
This wasn’t the first time Kai Zi had seen Bai Yichen. Their first meeting was when An Xin visited the countryside. That night, they didn’t interact much, and Kai Zi assumed Bai Yichen was just a friend.
But now, it was clear their relationship was far from ordinary.
Kai Zi had noticed Bai Yichen earlier when he drove a large freight truck effortlessly, keeping pace with professional drivers. However, Kai Zi found it odd that despite his skill, Bai Yichen was completely unknown in the provincial transport industry.
Just as An Xin was about to introduce him, Bai Yichen raised a hand to stop her. His dark eyes fixed on Kai Zi as he introduced himself, “I am Bai Yichen, An Xin’s husband.”
Kai Zi raised an eyebrow, his smile unwavering. “Oh, so you’re family. Pleasure to meet you!”
What a surprise! He had assumed Bai Yichen was just a friend or admirer, but it turned out he was her husband.
Sanmao, stuffing food into his mouth, lamented, “An Xin, you’re so young, and you’re already married!”
He had thought she was a beautiful and capable young woman, only to find out she was already taken. What a pity—good things always seem to get snatched up quickly.
