As she spoke, An Xin’s voice carried a hint of hoarseness, a clear remnant of the high fever she’d just experienced—even she could feel it.
Damn it, who would’ve thought that this village girl’s body couldn’t handle a bit of rain? In the end, she caught a cold.
Bai Yichen gently scooped a spoonful of rice porridge and brought it to An Xin’s lips, speaking in a calm, unhurried tone.
“Maybe it’s because you didn’t change out of your wet clothes after getting caught in the rain yesterday. Be careful next time.”
An Xin: “…”
She had guessed as much, but she hadn’t expected the consequences to be this severe, leaving her hospitalized and hooked up to an IV.
While An Xin was stunned, Bai Yichen had already brought the spoonful of porridge to her mouth, his tone soft and coaxing, as if speaking to a child.
“Eat something first. The doctor advised you to have some light food this morning. I made porridge and boiled a few eggs for you.”
What Bai Yichen didn’t mention was that he had prepared double portions of porridge and eggs. However, he only brought one serving of fried dough sticks—for himself. After all, fried dough sticks were too greasy, and given An Xin’s condition, they weren’t suitable. He wisely refrained from mentioning them.
An Xin swallowed the porridge, finding it surprisingly tasty. But as she glanced at the time, her thoughts weren’t on the food. She anxiously grabbed Bai Yichen’s tanned arm and asked, “What time is it now?”
She still needed to drive the truck. How could she leisurely lie in bed and eat breakfast? If she didn’t complete her schedule on time, not only would she lose the 15,000 yuan transportation fee, but she’d also have to pay hefty penalty fees. That would be a huge loss.
Bai Yichen’s deep black eyes reflected An Xin’s anxious expression. His gaze remained calm, and his voice was as gentle as ever.
“It’s still early. Eat your breakfast first.”
An Xin’s thoughts were written all over her face—how could Bai Yichen not know what she was worried about? But seeing that she was sick, how could he bear to let her run deliveries in this condition? He had already taken care of everything, ensuring that her transportation plan wouldn’t be disrupted.
With that thought, he calmly picked up the spoon again and continued feeding the porridge to the woman on the hospital bed.
When another spoonful of porridge was brought to her lips, An Xin suddenly lost her appetite. She pushed Bai Yichen’s arm away and tried to sit up, muttering, “Why am I eating breakfast? I need to go drive now.”
But before she could move, a large hand pressed firmly on her shoulder. Startled, An Xin looked up to see Bai Yichen’s serious expression as he said,
“Why the rush? Finish your breakfast first. As for today’s delivery schedule, I’ve already requested leave. Later, I’ll take Huzi to join Kaizi and the others to complete today’s plan. Don’t worry; we won’t miss a beat.”
He and Huzi were both capable men—driving trucks was no big deal for them.
An Xin’s face showed a hint of hesitation. She couldn’t help but say, “But…”
If she didn’t personally oversee the delivery, she couldn’t be sure that Bai Yichen, Huzi, and Kaizi could manage everything efficiently. After all, she was the backbone of the team. Without her, would there be any mishaps?
An Xin’s worrying stretched far indeed.
But Bai Yichen wasn’t about to entertain her objections. He interrupted firmly, “No buts. The doctor said your fever might recur, so you need to stay in the hospital for observation for a day or two. During this time, you’re not allowed to go anywhere. Stay put and recover. I promise to execute your transportation plan perfectly.”
After finishing, fearing that An Xin might get restless and try something sneaky, Bai Yichen put down the porridge bowl. His dark eyes fixed on her, and he enunciated each word.
“Trust me, I’ll lead the team to complete the task on time and in full.”
An Xin: “…”
Wasn’t this a bit too serious? It felt like a soldier reporting to their superior before a mission.
Seeing her silence, Bai Yichen took it as consent. He picked up the bowl again and continued feeding her.
“Come on, let’s finish the porridge.”
An Xin: “…”
Watching him seriously feed her spoonful by spoonful, An Xin’s eye twitched. Unable to hold back, she grabbed the bowl and said, “I’ll do it myself. I’m an adult; I don’t need you to feed me. You haven’t had breakfast either, right? Go eat yours quickly, then get going.”
She was just running a fever, not incapacitated. She didn’t need anyone to feed her. Besides, there was no time to act delicate in her situation.
Seeing her take the bowl, Bai Yichen silently glanced at her, then turned to eat his own breakfast.
This woman, no matter the situation, never forgot her transportation plans.
As Bai Yichen quickly ate his porridge and crisp golden fried dough sticks, his eyes occasionally glanced out the window while the corner of his vision remained on An Xin.
An Xin had eaten half a bowl of porridge and a boiled egg when she suddenly looked up and noticed the fried dough sticks on Bai Yichen’s plate. Instantly, she felt displeased.
“Hey, Bai Yichen, why don’t I have fried dough sticks?”
This guy was clearly being unfair. When she cooked, they ate the same food. Why did he treat her differently now that he was in charge of breakfast?
This man was too stingy. She wanted fried dough sticks too—especially after seeing how crisp and golden they were, and how much Bai Yichen seemed to enjoy them. Her dissatisfaction instantly magnified.
Hearing her, Bai Yichen paused mid-bite, his expression remained calm as he replied,
“The doctor said you’ve just recovered from a high fever and need to eat light food like porridge and boiled eggs. Greasy food isn’t suitable for you.”
An Xin: “…”
She knew he was right, but she couldn’t help feeling annoyed. Was Bai Yichen using her illness as an excuse to tease her appetite?
At that moment, a young man’s clear voice called from the courtyard below.
“Big brother, I’m here! Where are you?”
The voice sounded youthful and familiar, but she couldn’t remember where she had heard it before. Bai Yichen leaned out the window and glanced down, calling back,
“Huzi, wait for me downstairs. I’ll be right there.”
