The End of the World Scavenger: I Win by Turning Waste into Treasure Chapter 22: Wiping Out Their Nest

1, 2, 3… 6.

In the moonlight, Lin Chu counted. There were six people in this group.

Earlier in the day, nine people had gone to Building 6. Subtracting the three guys with glasses, Ma Yan’s group had six members.

Based on what she overheard from Gangzi and the short skinny guy, Lin Chu knew that two people stayed behind every day to guard the place.

Now that Gangzi and the short one were in her waist pouch, there were exactly six left—just the ones in front of her.

She hadn’t expected all of them to leave the base, which made things much easier for her.

The last person in the group turned back to shut the rear door they had exited through. He even took out a key and locked it.

Having a door and a lock might be one of the reasons they dared to all leave at once.

To make sure they didn’t come back unexpectedly, Lin Chu watched the system clock closely and waited until they had completely exited the compound before silently creeping toward the back door.

At the door, she paused to observe carefully. Once she confirmed that no one was left behind, she took a wire from her space and inserted it into the keyhole.

With a few twists, she heard a familiar click.

Lin Chu cracked the door open and carefully peeked inside.

This office building’s first floor was laid out differently from the Building 6 she was in before.

This company must have had a lot of staff, because aside from the entrance gate and a visitor waiting area, the rest of the first floor was filled with workstations and meeting rooms.

The main entrance was tightly sealed, and there weren’t many traces of blood inside. Clearly, the zombie outbreak hadn’t hit this company hard at first. Almost all the doors were still intact.

Lin Chu could see why Ma Yan’s group had chosen this as their shelter.

The main door could be locked, and there were plenty of inner rooms where each person could set up their own space.

Once the main door was locked, outsiders would have a hard time getting in.

Of course, that didn’t include someone like Lin Chu, who had special skills.

She had barely taken two steps when she heard a noise from inside the building.

Someone was here?

She froze, bone staff appearing in her hand, ready to defend herself.

But the sound neither approached nor stopped.

Lin Chu waited a moment, then used the noise to guide her, slowly approaching its source.

She stopped in front of the men’s restroom.

The door was shut tight, and the noise was coming from inside.

Ever since entering this mission world, she seemed to have a strange affinity with first-floor bathrooms.

She wasn’t sure what was inside.

Curious as she was, Lin Chu didn’t want to stir up trouble.

She had followed Dacheng to Ma Yan’s hideout with a specific goal: to destroy their shelter.

Based on Gangzi and the short guy’s conversation, she knew they hadn’t spent points to activate the system’s security door feature, thanks to the natural advantages of this location.

Now that she had reached the core of their stronghold, all she needed to do was destroy every door on the first floor to complete her mission.

Just as she was about to leave, she suddenly heard faint “mmph mmph” sounds from inside.

A person.

She suddenly remembered: both Gangzi and the others had mentioned someone called the “soldier nutcase.”

Apparently, this guy was captured earlier that day when Ma Yan’s group was going around destroying shelters.

As for why he was caught—she had no idea.

Lin Chu hesitated but ultimately decided to stick to her plan and leave.

Just in case, she would destroy the bathroom doors too—but not yet.

Soon, Lin Chu arrived at the first conference room she had passed earlier.

All the meeting rooms here had glass doors.

Tempered glass, most likely.

Easy to break.

Lin Chu pulled out the emergency safety hammer she had grabbed a few days ago from the fire escape.

This tool was perfect for breaking such doors.

As a forensic pathologist, Lin Chu had trained with firefighters before and knew exactly how to break glass properly.

Tempered glass is weakest at the edges and corners. You need to strike the same corner repeatedly and precisely.

After just three taps, cracks spread out from the impact point like a spider web.

“System, if this is a shelter door, does breaking it count as sabotage?”

[It counts.]

The system’s response was concise. Lin Chu didn’t care about anything except the answer.

If this counted as destruction, it was far easier than tearing a whole door down.

After all, this was a zombie world—too much noise could draw the dead.

Fortunately, Ma Yan’s group had already cleared out the local zombies to make life easier and earn points.

Even if distant zombies heard the sound and came over, it would take them some time.

With that thought, Lin Chu didn’t hesitate. She raised the hammer and began smashing every conference room door she could see.

Thanks to her technique, it took her just two minutes to smash all ten doors.

Just to be thorough, she did a quick sweep of the first floor.

Only the two restrooms remained.

Hearing the distant rustling of zombies drawn by the noise, Lin Chu turned to leave.

As she passed the bathrooms, she clearly heard the sounds inside getting louder.

Not just the men’s room—there was movement from the women’s room too.

She switched her bone staff for the Tang sword and held it across her chest. Then she kicked open the men’s room door.

The fitness pill she had taken earlier still seemed effective; the door flew open with a single kick.

Inside, a crew-cut man had black tape over his mouth and his hands tied behind his back. His whole body was bound like a dumpling, lashed to the column of the sink.

For some reason, the moment Lin Chu saw him, she sensed a kind of uprightness about him.

Only someone who had served in the military would carry that kind of aura.

Now she understood where the nickname “soldier nutcase” came from.

She stepped forward and tore the tape from his mouth.

“Who are you?”

“You’re the woman they’ve been looking for, aren’t you?”

They spoke almost at the same time.

Lin Chu didn’t respond.

The man looked at the Tang sword in her hands.

“Gangzi and the others… you’ve already taken care of them.”

It wasn’t a question—it was a statement.

Seeing Lin Chu tense slightly, the man gave an awkward smile.

“Sorry, occupational habit.”

“Comrade, my name is Yu Hongfei. I’m also a system tasker.”

By revealing this first, Yu Hongfei was showing his sincerity.

The rustling outside grew louder and closer.

Lin Chu knew the zombies drawn by the glass-breaking would soon surround the place.

Still, she kept her eyes locked on the man, speaking slowly and firmly.

“Why should I believe you?”
